lowkey forgetting that tsukasa's not actually the only mermaid/mermaid-adjacent here. kind of had it in my head regarding the tail thing that it's like a great source of pride for mermaids in general, since it's their defining feature, which is why tsukasa's is on full display.
he can in fact assume human legs, mostly because he wants the mobility for his shows, but most of the time he's in a custom wheelchair since it only lasts about 2 or so hours, because again, he wouldn't want to be rid of it. this is kind of just because i didn't really want to cop-out of him having those defining mermaid features whilst still keeping tsukasa's tendencies in mind.

Notes abt the AU
So Mafuyu was born a mermaid and her family are mermaids as well but (I'm making up lore :3) if a mermaid starts to lose itself and become empty it will then seek out others
And so in seeking out others despite its increasing emptiness, it gains the ability to lure people in with their voice, basically making a siren (which is why serines are looked down on in this world) they’re seen as bitter and mutated creatures so it wouldn’t be too good of a look for the Asahinas
And so Mafuyu tried doing that and just hid the slowly changing siren traits from everyone else to seem normal and prefect, she was able to use music to find Kanade and start Niigo. She can and has used siren abilities before, but generally doesn’t. Niigo knows about the siren stuff but generally nobody else does well her folks now know bc in this au that secrete also came out during the conformation during mafu4 but shhhh

[saki hopped down to the floor with an unceremonious *thud* as she almost stuck the landing. you'd think that after two decades of this, she'd be better at maneuvering herself through the air. nonetheless, she popped back up with a smile.]

"of course i would want to accompany you! ☆" ...actually he'd been worried that it would be a lot further and saki wouldn't make it back alright. even if she was, well..., tsukasa would rather worry about it than be negligent. "...augh!! but i have no idea where else we could even go to begin with!!"

hrm. i think that they'd have to live in shibuya proper still. with tsukasa still being at kamiyama, the fact that i think off the top of my head it takes a proper trip to get the beach from where they are, the whole custom wheelchair situation and the fact that i don't think ocean life would be good on saki after. Drowning.
but this begs the question of what happens with the tenma parents... like obviously with the sibling pairs having different species there'd be a bit of hoop jumping, but then there's the difference in timelines to account for saki being from the 00s. would they even still be biologically related or is it like chosen family again? many such things to ponder.

-> When he was a child, he lived on a very far place with his family isolated from literally THE WHOLE society and was still obligated to play piano and violin.
-> Lore stuff happened and Toya moved alone to Shibuya, met Akito and later they formed the VBS.
-> Because of the isolation, Toya's social skills are very week and he don't know exactly how to interact with people
