World of Goo 2 beta history, part 1: the beginnings
World of Goo 2 has an interesting development history. We'll go over here, over the span of a few parts...
World of Goo 2 first started development sometime in 2020. We don't know much on how the game was being developed during the early days, as the developers haven't told us much. However, according to Noel Llopis, one of the programmers, the game originally was just based on the first World of Goo.
It seems the first WoG2 builds were likely WoG1, but possibly with new functions added on. Its unclear when things like liquid and the new terrain system were first added, however terrain may of been first created in 2022. Early screenshots of the game, which were leaked, showcased a very early version of the terrain, with it looking more like the first game's artstyle. The second WoG game has a drastically different style, as its much more detailed and even a tad bit more realistic.
While not confirmed, it seems like it was just Kyle Gabler (artist, musician, and designer) and Ron Carmel (programmer) on the game. It wasn't until a year or two later that Kyle Gray (designer), Allan Blomquist (another programmer), and multiple more programmers and artists came in and helped with the game.
This was a brief rundown about the game's initial development, but in future parts we'll detail things like scrapped ideas and other stuff, including information straight from the developers. Stay tuned, more will be out soon.
