Scary to some, sexy to others. I guess they can be both at the same time. Taking on high heels can be quite a challenge. And you don’t want to start off the wrong heel, since high heels are amazing. (Obviously I am biased.)
I got my first “heels” when I was about ten – they weren’t real “heels”, rather 1-inch orange shoes, yuck. However, thanks to my mom’s expertise with high heels, I think I have become a master of this art, too. This is where I would like to thank my mom, in case she is reading this – merci, maman.
Since I obviously think that my mom is the greatest, I want to share some of the great tips she shared with me 12 years ago. So here we go:
Don’t start off with 4-inch heels. Nobody can handle it. It’s better to start off small and slightly increase the height of your heels. That way you learn how to walk properly in heels and can take on higher heels, as soon as you feel comfortable in your current ones.
Rule #2: Buy heels that fit.
The worst thing you can do, is buy heels that are either too small, or too big. Especially if they are too big, your foot might slide out and you are more likely to have a not-so-elegant contact with the street. Don’t buy heels if they are not the right size. Also, buy heels that feel comfortable. If they are already painful to wear, while you are only trying them on, you probably won’t be able to walk in them.
Rule #3: Practice, practice, practice.
Wear them at home before you go out in your new heels. Get used to them, and break them in. This will make you walk better in them and not make a fool out of yourself, and cause you less pain – especially if you’re a beginner.
But don’t go all out right away. Don’t wear them out to a club first. You’ll regret it after at most 2 hours when your feet will punish you. Wear them first to a coffee date with your best friend, a grocery trip.
Rule #5: Take them out again, and again.
High heels are not meant to stay in a closet. You have to enjoy them. Match them up with your outfit. Go have fun with them! That's what they're meant for.
Rule #6: Take good care of them!
Believe it or not – shoes have feelings, too. And they need to be pampered from time to time. Take care of your heels if they break or get torn. Bring them to the shoemaker. Polish your shoes (especially if they’re leather ones) and spray them so that they stay clean and don’t suck up all the rainwater.
Because those heels, they love you back. Every time you put them on, they will make you look fabulous. They give you edge, and make you feel gorgeous. And what more could you ask for from a pair of heels?
