        ❝ 17—okay, even for you, that’s bad. ❞ part of the fun of it, though, isn’t it? clara just wishes that she’d resisted the lure of dressing up for once — you have to look like you fit in, for the beatles — because she has a feeling that there will be some early eighteenth century locals who aren’t as keep on the miniskirt as she happens to be. or maybe not. they are on the moors. if the screaming wasn’t in earshot, she’d say there was nobody around for miles.

        but that’s clearly not the case. good. she’s never been able to resist a good going on, and there’s something going on here.

        ❝ don’t make promises you can’t keep, doctor. ❞ she means it, too. she gets it; this is a dangerous life. and he’s a terrible navigator. ( that, or the tardis still doesn’t like her, after clara thought they’d managed to get on better terms. )  ❝ what if the screaming is because of the music? maybe if you’re too close to wherever it’s coming from, it does something to your ears? we should’ve brought earplugs. ❞

     Oh, she is good isn’t she, his Clara? When she’s not bullying him, that is. ( Not that he minds it so much, really, if he’s being honest. And he can be honest in that head of his. Rather than aloud, where she might hear it. ) She has him coming to an abrupt halt, at which point he starts patting his pockets down. It takes him a few moments -- and he’s pulled plenty more out of those pockets, casually tossing them over his shoulder when he realises they aren’t going to be useful -- to find the earplugs, which he presents proudly. 

     ‘ Never go anywhere without some! ’ And a whole mess of other stuff, it seems. Never mind that, though. He’s just realised that he only has one pair -- and really looks like he’s considering how it would go if they just used one each. No, that’s ridiculous. ‘ Here. ’ He tosses the little capsule of them her way and starts walking again. ‘ Just in case. If you start getting any irritation or ringing or Michael Bublé in your ears, pop those in. ’ The I’ll make do goes without saying. ‘ We’ll call that plan B for now, though. I’ve come across something like this before. Think of -- the Pied Piper, but he eats everyone. ’ A beat. ‘ Think of the Pied Piper. ’

     ‘ He’s even more wrong than you are. ’ The Doctor gives Ned a quick scan with his sonic -- which Ned doesn’t appreciate -- and frowns at the results. He turns on Pippa in an instant. No offence Ned, but she’s definitely the more capable one, here. If this is something to do with anyone, it’s something to do with her. ‘ What happened to him? ’ Just as quickly, he backs off. ‘ No, that’s not the question. -- What hasn’t happened to him? ’

     ‘ Oh! Midge Maisel, this is really great! The magnificent Mrs Maisel herself! I’m such a big fan. ’ The Doctor has been shaking her hand for a solid fifteen seconds and shows absolutely no signs of stopping. ‘ Really. I saw you at the Copacabana fifteen times! Made me laugh so hard I cried! ’ Has that happened yet? He isn’t sure. Oh well, as long as he doesn’t mention that eleven of those times were the same gig, it’ll be fine. Probably. 

     He realises quite abruptly that he’s still shaking her hand, and lets go. ‘ Sorry, you’ll be wanting that back, won’t you? ’

          ‘ hello ? ’ his voice is small and luke’s hands stop smashing the figures together a moment as his eyes focus on the woods up behind hill house. there’s a strange, screeching sound, unlike any of the other more-ghostly noises of the last few days. ‘ stop making jokes, theo. i’m tryna play here ! ’

     The Doctor, quite lacking in anything close to grace, comes all but tumbling out of the woods right on cue. He feels like he’s been stuck in there for hours ( there’s something funny going on here ) but then he heard the voice. This kid doesn’t know what he’s just helped drag the Doctor out of -- and he won’t ever, either, if the Doctor has anything to say about it.

     ‘ Hi -- Sorry. Not Theo. I’m the Doctor! ’ He almost trips over himself in his haste to get away from those trees. Even when he’s come to a still by the boy’s side, he’s still looking pretty eager to get away. ‘ What are we playing? Looks fun! Let’s go play it over there, shall we? Away from these pesky trees. I hate trees. ’ He hates what’s in them even more.

        ❝ anyone who isn’t you. ❞ clara still sounds exasperated, but there’s a hint of a smile, too. lucky for her, she’s behind the doctor — not everyone has great long giraffe legs upon which they can stride across moors in very practical boots — so he can’t see it. he probably knows, though, doesn’t he? there’s a mystery here, an adventure, and clara has never turned down one of those. she runs to catch up with him, poking his arm.  ❝ you owe me the beatles. when are we, anyway? ‘cause we’re in the wrong city, so who knows when we are, and i look…very sixties. ❞

     ‘ 1719, give or take. ’ He says it very quickly, like he’s trying to gloss over the fact that he’s gotten it so wrong. Which he is. Still! There’s plenty of fun to be had here, isn’t there? The Doctor can see it on her face, anyway, that she’s enjoying herself already, even if they are in entirely the wrong time. 

     He does give her a glance over at the mention of looking very sixties, and she has a point, but the Doctor’s mind is focused on other things, right about now. It doesn’t occur to him that the smartest thing to do right now would be to turn right around and let Clara change her clothes to something a little less... that. ‘ We can do the Beatles next week, anyway. I promise. ’ He smiles. ‘ Right now, though, we need to find someone who knows more about this music. ’

        ❝ are you sure about that? ‘cause you sound like a cartoon farmer voiced by an american. ❞ maybe clara isn’t from yorkshire, but she’s still northern, thank you very much, and she has enough of this fake accent nonsense from the kids at school. ( and let it never be said that she passes up an opportunity for her second-favourite pastime of teasing the doctor wherever she can. he makes it so easy. )  ❝ i’m from the north, doctor. and no, i didn’t. you told me we were going to see the beatles. who are from liverpool, by the way. ❞ 

     ‘ Ah -- Liverpool, York. Who can tell the difference, really? ’ Clara, evidently, but that isn’t important. At least she hasn’t pointed out that he’s also missed their target date by about, oh, 200 years? They’re here now, anyway. They have to commit. The Doctor himself is already heading off to try and get a handle on the situation, mostly just assuming ( who is he kidding -- he knows she will ) that Clara will follow him. ‘ This is loads more fun, anyway. The Beatles, that’s just all screaming. You can’t even hear the music! This is -- This is also... screaming and music. Never mind. ’

        ❝ martha? ❞ clara almost misses her, she’s so focused on trying to understand the readouts kate gave her, but she is so glad that she looks up at that precise moment. could have missed her entirely, didn’t even know she was working at UNIT, and that would have been a travesty.  ❝ martha jones? hi. big fan. ❞

     ‘ Uh -- thanks. ’ It sounds more like a question. And, yes, the question is very much do I know you? Martha isn’t so used to this. Having fans, that is. She’s got supportive friends and co-workers, yeah, but that’s different to someone randomly coming up to you and calling themselves a big fan. You know what, though? It’s still a great feeling, being noticed. ‘ Sorry, this is a little weird. Have we met -- ? ’

     ‘ North of -- ? Of course I’ve been north of London! ’ He’s been to Gloucestershire. What can he say? The TARDIS just likes London. It’s nothing to do with him! Except for that it’s everything to do with him. But that isn’t the point, here! The point is: that was an absolutely fantastic version of a Yorkshire accent -- specifically Barnsley! He knows it’s authentic! Clara! -- and she is just... she’s just... Well, she’s got a point, actually, hasn’t she, but he’s offended so he’s not going to give it to her. Instead, he gets all huffy, and the Doctor straightens his bow tie in a manner that somehow manages to say well, you’re from Lancashire anyway. ‘ Remind me not to bring you to the North again. Anyway, no. What were we doing? Right! Weird music over the moors. Come along! I hope you brought your walking shoes. ’
