Compiling my worm fact sheets (and other worm related stuff) into a more concise blog! I feel like this is better than them just getting lost in my main account, @mysteriouslyinky 😭 Enjoy! More pages and worm art (…slowly…) on the way!

(I have a tendency to make spelling errors… please correct me if you see em! Also if biologists… or anyone, really, want to add onto what I’ve said, PLEASE DO!! My work is meant to spark discussion!)

Hate hate hate when people say “earthworms can’t drown!” When people are talking about saving them from sidewalk puddles. Yes, it takes days for them to actually die in water, but they can’t move well when fully submerged and can still get stuck and die! They are worth saving! (Earthworms can survive in water, but it can be hard for them to move through it, especially on concrete: this is why sea worms often have parapodia or differently shaped bodies that allow them to swim!)

ALSO!!! THEY CAN SUFFOCATE IF THE OXYGEN LEVELS IN THE WATER ARE NOT OPTIMAL!! THEY ABSORB OXYGEN THROUGH THEIR SKIN. JUST BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE LUNGS DOESNT MEAN THEY DONT NEED OXYGEN!!!

All this to say, please, don’t discourage people from pulling worms out of sidewalk puddles. If anything, tell them to wash their hands first or use something (like a card, I use cards) to pick them up so the salt from your hands does not harm them.

I feel sad when I see waterlogged worm bodies all over the city after the rain. There’s no harm in scooping them off the sidewalks either. It gets them out of peoples walking paths and reduces the chance of them drying out when the rain stops. I’m sure they don’t mind a helping hand getting them where they need to go!

Flatworms pt. 2! God I wish there was more info on these guys besides just the “they’re evil” sentiment… they have native ranges… we barely even know how they function within them! Please make sure they’re genuinely invasive to your area before you kill them…
