location: great hall date: october 31st, just before midnight open to: anyone
It was colder outside, the mask he’d pulled off a few minutes ago hanging dumbly in his hand by his side. By now, everyone was beginning to scatter, making their moves to get away from the hall as quickly as possible. It didn’t matter that much to him, considering that he’d lost his date a while ago, and he wish he could’ve been surprised. Cynicism wasn’t a shade that he wore well, surliness and frowns doing a hell of a job tonight. Maybe Greta had noticed and ditched him. Or maybe he ditched her, he couldn’t even remember. After fighting with Fabian, only to end up breaking another fight, everything just seemed to blur into one big bitter mess. Though he was sure that whatever the punch had been spiked with wasn’t helping the matter, the sickly sweet taste on his tongue mixing with the strong acrid taste underneath it.
Gideon realized that curfew was going to be approaching soon, and eventually the professors would be around in an attempt to try and corral the students into the rules once more, as if the previous hours had never happened - but he wasn’t in the mood to deal with them. He leaned back against the brick wall behind him, before noticing the figure approaching. Forcing a smile onto his face, he wrinkled his nose. “You’re too late if you were coming to ask for my hand to dance. Missed the oppurtunity of a lifetime right there,” he said, laughing flatly before shaking his head. That’s what everyone had their ‘perfect match’ for, after all - wasn’t it?
“Hey.”
Tried as he did to stave off the note of disillusionment hanging off the vestiges of his words, Peter simply didn’t have it in him anymore. Perhaps it was the fact that he’d tried to fit in too many activities in the span of a night (and not even a full night even, not by his standards) - keeping an eye on Remus, trying not to embarrass himself in front of his match, realize once and for all that he’d somehow, for some reason unbeknownst to him, gotten Fabian Prewett and attempting to deduce how he felt about the revelation, all the while maintaining his calm and his composure - but he was exhausted, he was spent... but apparently not enough to ignore the siren call that was the sight of Gideon across the room, alone and frowning and urging him to turn said lips upside down.
Had he seen though? Did he know that he’d gotten, of all people, his twin as his date?
With the greeting came a lame wave of his hand and a smile that, despite all other emotions, could not be stopped from spreading wide across his face. By his mere presence, his best friend elicited that out of him, and Peter had no complaints either way, it was nice to come down from the mild tension of the night to the familiar comforts of Gideon’s presence and company. “I was actually going to ask you if you’d wanna go find an empty classroom with me, but if a dance is all you’re looking for, I’m open to that too,” he joked wickedly, crashing on a spot on the wall next to the boy and nudging him with his elbow. “Unless you’ve been off to one already, I think I saw about... five couples not headed in the direction of the dorms.” In his hand was a cup of the punch still, staring down at it and swirling it now absentmindedly to just have something to and direct his attention to. With such close proximity, Peter could’ve sworn that he could feel the very aura of disappointment, of sadness radiating from his friend, and though he tried his best to distract him from it, there was still an intense desire within him to, if he could, take on the struggles that the other was having so he wouldn’t have to feel the way he did anymore. It wasn’t fair for someone with such a kind heart after all. “You, uh... you okay? Or would you rather not talk and just... I mean, I guess we can dance, if that’s something you really want to do. I’d rather we didn’t cause then you’d get to see how bloody awful I am at it, but you did say it’s the opportunity of a lifetime so maybe I should get my shot in while we’re here, right?”
