Pop culture deity work is watching your other witch friends leave beautiful offerings in the form of incense, hand-cooked meals, shells and stones, lengthy poetry, etc. while you’re over in your little pop-culture corner like “I offer up this cup of instant ramen”

Not necessarily. While some characters would prefer instant ramen, you can absolutely cook longer meals for other characters. Have you seen some of the fandom recipes online? Some of those can take hours! You can also create your own recipes for them, too. As a BATIM worshipper, I’ve had to learn to cook bacon (which I don’t like, lol) and make recipes from the Great Depression to give as offerings.

I also have this funny story where I went out and ate Japanese food and when I brought it home I offered it to “whoever was watching me that day”. I got a masculine and offended presence from whoever took up the tonkatsu ramen, and he conveyed with his energy “these are Maruchan noodles”. I ate them some more and I could literally taste the cheapness of the noodles. This restaurant had made a soup on their own and then added Maruchan noodles to it instead of a different brand or hand-making them. He also conveyed to me not to serve up leftovers, but…he took it, and some of my other spirits ask for them, so oh well. He just doesn’t like them.

Also you can totally give characters shells and write them poetry. You should give it a try.

~Bendy’s Inky Curse~ (a pop culture spell)

“I am alive, immortalized! You’re the creator, you traitor.”

A curse perfect for those who have betrayed you in any way, shape, or form. Let them remember as they drown in their inky lake of regret.

YOU WILL NEED:

Black ink-to drown the victim in darkness.

3 red candles-to show your passion to get revenge.

2 black candles-to add more to the darkness.

Salt (black or white)-to give a salty kick into the spell.

Cloth (white is preferred)

Cardboard box

Cursed sigil of your choosing-to summon your wrath in physical form.

Picture of victim in black and white with their first and last name written on the back (if you can’t get the picture, writing just their name is fine)

OPTIONAL:

I recommend you play “Build Our Machine” while you cast the spell. It adds a ton of energy into the spell, including you. 

For the picture, you can always screw it up a little like adding the Bendy eyes or draw x’s on them. You gotta have a teeny bit of fun when casting this spell!

Wear black clothes to channel your hatred into the spell. Plus, who doesn’t want to look like the darlin’ demon himself?

Also, if you have one, you can use an athame to direct your anger straight into the curse. Of course, this is optional.

INSTRUCTIONS:

On the cloth, draw a pentagram in black ink. Make sure the spaces are large enough to write the sigil and to place the candles. WARNING: INK IS VERY MESSY! DO THIS IN AN AREA WHERE YOU WON’T CARE IF THERE ARE A FEW SPLOTCHES.

Arrange the candles into the spaces with the ends. One red candle should go at the tip of the pentagram and the other two at the bottom tips to create a triangle. The black candles should go to the left and right spaces.

Draw the cursed sigil in the center of the pentagram with the ink. Put the picture underneath it once it’s dry.

Create a ring of salt around the cloth and light the candles.

(If you’re using an athame, point it now at circle.) Close your eyes and channel your regret, hatred, and fury into the circle. Feel the wrath flow through your body and drip off of you like ink swimming through the machine. When you are ready, open your eyes and glare at the picture, imagining them being soaked in ink, crying for help.

Recite the spell:

“You stabbed me in the back with  little games,

But you threw yourself into the flames.

I will not dance or sing for you to make your silly remarks,

For I am not your creation for you to discard.

For your actions, you shall pay,

By drowning in a sea in ink for the rest of your days.

Fall into your last sleep, little sheep,

And fall to me on your shaking knees.

You shall not betray me any longer,

I will hunt you down like wolves, growing stronger.

You are the machine of hate and expected me to follow,

But now this is my stage and you will shrivel in sorrow.

Drown in my anger, my fury, my rage,

Remember the dismay you caused me in this horrible cage.

You’re the fool and shall forever scream,

As I will it, so mote it be!”

7. Soak the picture in the ink. Blow out the candles and pour the wax on the pentagram, sealing the curse. Wrap the cloth up and place it in the cardboard box. Throw it in a place that is abandoned and isolated, like how you were when the victim betrayed you. 

*If you wish to remove the spell, simply take out the cloth and rip it to shreds.

He’s a fictional character. Obviously. But I hear him in my dreams, and he tells me I’m worth something the way I am. I’m worth something if my mind deteriorates. I’m worth something if it all goes away tomorrow, because I was grown through his gifts and he loves me.

‘Real’ is… Very subjective when you’re schizoaffective. ‘Fiction’ is also subjective.

🔥pop culture magic/paganism

Pop culture magic/paganism is an inevitable result of companies (mostly Disney) trying to worm their products into every aspect of our own lives.

But while pop culture magic/paganism may a result of this, it's also entirely possible to take parts of the media for occult, spiritual, or religious purposes and then refuse to interact with anything new, whether or not the franchise is getting new stuff.

There's also the fact that these things are often protected by copyright, so if you have a company or creator who is really copyright-strike-happy (again, Disney being an example), your practice probably isn't going to be popular online.

There's a lot more nuance to discuss in pop culture magic/paganism than it just being "valid" or """real""", and I wish we could have the time and spaces to discuss these other aspects (even if we have to build them, like I and a few others have) without people butting in like "Well I don't like your practice and I think it's invalid, so STOP DOING IT." We get it, Rebecca! You've been ranting about us existing for months! No one is suppressing your opinion, we're just ignoring you because you clearly don't want us interacting with you.

I think one thing that separates witches from new agers is that new agers will try to repress negative thoughts and emotions so that they 'draw more positive things into their lives' and 'boost their vibrations' while witches will work hard to process their negative thoughts and emotions in order to better understand themselves and their feelings.

New agers focus on separating themselves from their humanity claiming to be above humans and here to aid them, them themselves being free from flaw. Witches recognize their humanity and try to see their flaws and work towards their betterment rather than assuming themselves to be the ones free of flaw and blaming others for their own misdeeds.

One definitely involves a lot of repression and denile while the other tries to see their flaws and see how they could do better.

I would say that witches like to see themselves like this. Just as how New Agers see themselves in rose colored lenses, so too do witches it seems. New Agers are focused on all-positive vibes, whereas witches harness negativity and decide whether it's positive or negative. Especially in the past, witches were focused on self-improvement as well, but they enjoyed certain darker elements like stubbornness, a little mischief, and pride at their skill in their craft. Not sure what witches do nowadays, I've been too focused on my own work to really look at the trends in behavior. Basically, witches were darker and edgier New Ageists.

As a New Ager might say to you, it may do you some good to meditate and reflect on how you think judging another group and putting them down for the sake of looking good amongst your friends maybe isn't so pure. Or nice. It's very common nowadays, but it isn't a healthy trend. I recommend you try to step into their shoes and think about how you're trying to do the very same thing you think they're doing (or at least, going by your words).

There are many other strategies to work in spirits based upon fictional beings in your practice. There are non-chaotic ways to incorporate fiction-based magick in your spells. I am going to bite you So fucking hard if you think it’s fundamentally “worshiping capitalism” to engage with spirits from pop culture. Like please tell me how my working with a character from a public domain novel whom I’ve never once bought merch for amounts to that, and then explain exactly where you draw the line between “okay because it’s Pure and Untainted by Capitalism” and “unholy because you have an anime figurine on your altar or whatever.”

“But Marvel characters and capitalism and cringey teens!” Idk how to tell you this, but we live under capitalism and sometimes the things people connect with on a spiritual level will be unavoidably sourced from capitalism. If capitalism falls, those symbols will change and people’s connections to them will grow and change as well, but nobody’s energetically carrying capitalism on their backs by drawing strength from Superman when they have to go to a job interview.

And to elaborate on this a little:

“Sourced from capitalism” is an extremely broad term. Is my tarot deck “sourced from capitalism” because I bought it at a large bookstore, or is it sourced from the artistic talents and spiritual leanings of the person who designed it? Does the fact that an iPod was created by Apple, and Apple is an unethical capitalist nightmare company, mean that an animist should set aside their iPod in a special “do not treat this like it has a spirit” exclusion zone? What about clothes that were made in sweatshops? What about plastic objects that are bad for the environment? What should go in the exclusion zone, and where do you draw the line?

I don’t actually worship any of my pop culture spirit companions. It falls more in the realm of spirit work for me. But none of the people I know who have close devotional relationships with fictional characters are “worshiping capitalism” - they’re worshiping the spirit who responds when they pray. It sounds so willfully ignorant to me when people insist that pop culture paganism can never be healthy or spiritually meaningful for the sole reason that somebody owns the concept of Galadriel.

Somebody owns the original character concept created by J.R.R. Tolkien, yes. But they don’t own your personal copy of the Silmarillion that you’ve treated with religious reverence for years, and they don’t own your feelings about Galadriel. They don’t own the organic connection that forms between you and your personal interpretation of Galadriel. They don’t own your altar or the tools you place on it or the worship you take part in.

In addition to all this, Gods and spirits aren’t interchangeable. If someone can’t feel spiritually fulfilled without worshiping a specific entity who first appeared in a piece of secular fiction, you can’t reasonably expect them to just go “well, I have this personal relationship that I’ve put years of work into, and this perfectly functional devotional practice that works because of who my deity is, but I’m not the copyright holder for the original novel… so I guess I’ll swap them out for Aphrodite, and everything will be the same.” That’s not how this shit works.

Perhaps one part of the issue is the conceptualization in how spirits work? If someone doesn't believe in pop culture spirits or believes that they are ultimately a spirit pretending to be the character, then perhaps the root of their criticism is an attempt to, essentially, de-convert you. It doesn't matter if how much you love the spirit, if it's lying, it's lying. If they believe that character is a historical god trying to go easy on you, then they may want to push you out of your comfort zone so that you wake up because the deity isn't doing it for you.

I agree with you on how Pagans can treat technology like it is no longer a part of the earth. Crystals and heavily worked on wood and other heavily changed natural objects are deemed as sacred, whereas objects harnessing the metals of the earth just aren't as cool. This is probably the environmentalist perspective. It's important to remember that before the 2010s when Paganism became super-cool, Paganism was mostly derived from people who liked history and nature. Wicca was called a "nature based religion", and so were the revived polytheist religions. Though many ancient people had cities and some of those people were at least a little disconnected from nature (like a city Roman girl who never steps out of the house but eats mostly seasonally because there's no choice but to) these modern religions are done by people who push the sacredness of the ancient human form. Some of these people don't believe that the that ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians had ancient electricity, nor that Romans had glowing clay lamps to let them stay up late. Can you believe it? (disclaimer: most people don't believe that). But the idea is that the more primitive, the better. Technology? No electricity, no plastics, no metals, etc. But in reality, most of those people are either working towards the goal of de-electrifying their life or saying that it's good without doing it. Because it's a nature/primitive based lifestyle and religion. Pop culture paganism in contrast can be done in a more eco-friendly way...like books or oral stories. But outside of that, it's all technology, and technology is evil.

As far as Communism and other anti-capitalist agendas goes...most of this website promotes that stuff. Everyone on here is supporting capitalism, both because they live in a society that uses money and because they buy stuff. It's just that, like every other political identity label, they have to criticize you to earn points and boost their personal and social esteem. If you focus on a thing that's from a book so ancient that there aren't copyright laws holding it and from a time pre-industrial revolution, then that's very uncapitalistic of you, even if you buy a bunch of crystals and plants and candles to support your gods. However if you instead focus your spirituality on something that was created to bring very dead and...rectangularly processed plants to its creators, then even if you're "too poor and lazy" or "not a real fan" enough to buy the merchandise that would be the stereotypically the way you'd show love to those dedication and love to the show/video game/etc, then it's still very capitalistic and pro-technology of you to do so. Because that stuff wouldn't exist without the need to make tons of money (barring indies, but historically it's about that dough) and without electricity. There's some hypocrisy in there and winding thoughts, but I think I got it.
