Part 3 Sammy Lore
(Note: At this point some story writing is just getting out of hand and I wanna share it with anyone who wants to read)
Opening lore? I guess.
News reporter: our latest update on the attack at the Pokémon league. Merely hours ago there were several explosions and what appeared to be airships descending onto the championship battle. Both the champion and challenger were moments away from a deciding call when panic ensued.
Reporters have been sending in footage however some appears distorted. Between these airships a large Pokémon or an entity was coming out of nowhere. Local professor theorizes it could have been Giratina but deems it nearly impossible.
Next dayâs news: we are sad to announce. There were some fatalities amongst the casualties during yesterdayâs attack. The challenger for the champions title was saved after the entity vanished by her team of five PokĂ©mon. They caught her from what would have been a fatal fall and threw her towards the fire marshals, though it has been confirmed there were injuries. Witnesses claim that her infernape tried to save her team as the league building fell.
The organisation known as team galactic have been accused of being behind this attack and many affiliates have been taken in for questioning. However the ones present are nowhere to be found, one airship apparently vanishing into nothing.
The tv was shut off by the nurse tending to Sammy who was staring at the ceiling with tears streaming down her cheeks.
she had fought every attempt to help her, insisting she had to get her team back? That they needed her there. However her back had suffered a few fractures and her left leg was broken in three places. It would be a long while before she could go anywhere. She felt the cold and heavy weight of the great ball hanging from her neck on her chest. Her last ditch attempt at stopping whatever it was coming through the rift and destroying everything. Â
The nurse was speaking but she couldnât hear her. The news was still ringing in her mind. Dead. She refused to believe it. She couldnât. Her heart already hurt being away from them and the possibility that she would never see them again almost killed her. If the nurseâs reaction of pushing the crash button was any indication.
ââââââââââ
Almost a year passed before Sammy could finally get up and move on her own. Several surgeries had made sure she would walk again with the aid of a cane, otherwise sheâd use a wheelchair for walks longer than ten minutes.
The champion had tried getting in touch with her and even offered the title, declaring she would have won or that her teamâs heroics were a testament to her character.
She refused.
Today however was different. The champion reached out again and offered to bring Sammy to the monument placed in the garden of the new league building.
The monument was shown live at the reopening ceremony and she nearly went mad. Why did they keep her team there and not send them home? It Occurred to her later that given what happened that it wouldnât be possible.
So Sammy found herself in a limo being driven up to the league and pushed in a chair up to the garden gates. When asked if sheâd like an escort she declined and slowly hobbled through. She knew the champion was following and ignored them. Once she got in sight of the gravestone she could feel her heartbreak anew.
It was beautifully made out of polished granite, the likeness of her teamâs faces all looking up from a gold plaque along with their nicknames. She broke. The next few hours were the most painful sheâd ever been through, more than coming to in hospital, more than the physical therapy. Her world ended here and the universe clearly felt it. Rain struck and quickly soaked her through. The cold granite and gold faces looked like they were crying too. She couldnât help them, they werenât coming back. It wasnât fair. A yearâs worth of rage, frustration  and sorrow hit her all at once and she fell, sat with her back to the stone unable to face it and clutching her face as she let all these things out in a scream of absolute anguish.
It was midnight before the champion came back, worried that she hadnât gone home. Sammy was picked up and taken inside out of the rain and cold.
âââââââ
When Sammy turned 23 she had recovered from her injuries but had not taken on another PokĂ©mon since. She kept the great ball on her at all times. Constantly worried that if anything happened to it the world would be at its mercy. She avoided trainers questions and pleas to battle and avoided interviews about what happened even more. When asked âhey werenât you that challenger whose team saved the league?â it tore her in half, wanting to lie just to get away or trying to say yes without breaking down.
A friend happened to suggest travelling a bit. She still had a trainer passport and a not too bad chunk of savings. So with little warning she did just that. Grabbed a boat ticket and just left. She wasnât sure what would happen but as long as it was as far away from painful questions and sympathetic looks it would be Better.

Part 2
The little croc Pokémon turned out to be quite the little helper.
When Sammy went out to explore the city he sat on her lap  and  kept still so he wouldnât fall off or get in the way.
In one of the cafeâs she decided she liked best he hopped up on the counter and gently and carefully handed her down her drink while the cashier had made to give her change. This amused them so they gave him a little cookie for being helpful, and Sammy thanked them, taking her drink outside to sit in the sun. Totodile sat on the table nibbling at his cookie and dipping it in her coffee when he thought she wasnât looking, so she moved the cup a bit closer.
A few people made remarks on how cute he was being and said good morning to Sammy. She was feeling much better, and with her new companion, didnât feel as lonely as before. She still felt pain when thinking of her old team but it felt as if she was growing used to it, making it more of an ache.
When someone asked her for a battle she declined without freaking out, though Totodile looked a little crestfallen he just crawled back into her lap and tried his best to hug her with his little arms.
She kept spotting that green haired man from before though he never came close enough for a conversation or acknowledged her, not that she minded, he seemed a bit off.
When she felt that sheâd seen more than enough of the city she packed up and thanked the ladies sheâd stayed with for their help and kindness, and asked them if there were any sights she must see in Unova before heading home. They laid out a few things in almost every town and city in the region. At first Sammy wasnât sure sheâd be able to see them all, she wasnât sure how well able sheâd be to travel. So got a quick check up from the hospital in the city, hoping theyâd at least be able to keep her stocked before she attempted such a feat.
_____________
A week later Sammy found herself in Nimbasa city. It had been a bit of a trial to get here without taking transport, and her hands ached but she managed. She had filled her pack with supplies, and even managed to get a small tent. The desert luckily had at least a partial road she stuck to, and there was surprisingly frequent travellers who either camped nearby or pointed her to water stations along the way.
Totodile seemed happy to not be out there any more, and had done his best to scare off the wild PokĂ©mon that got too close. Heâd almost got into a fight but Sammy seemed dead set against battling. This confused him somewhat, had he read her wrong? Heâd picked her to go to because she seemed like the perfect battle partner, but she didnât want to fight. Maybe this was a test? He nodded to himself sagely and just played along, being helpful when he could, and a comfort when he couldnât. She seemed to like that at least.
This city felt so much more, colourful than Castelia. If Sammy thought that it had been before well now she was corrected. It seemed like a very lively place, she could hear carnival music, saw lots of families and children running around, could hear the sports announcers in the far distance and blinking lights absolutely everywhere. Totodile perked up too and practically bounced on her legs pointing at the signs heading towards the fairgrounds.
âAlright buddy I get it. We can check that out first.â She almost smiled again, catching herself, feeling guilt hit her hard but pushed it back down. Maybe it won't hurt so much later, and she wheeled them into the faire. Delicious smells of candy floss and sugary donuts hit them, making both mouths water. Trainer and PokĂ©mon shared a look. âFood first.â She followed the smell to a stand selling the sweets and cold fizzy drinks, getting one each and letting Totodile  share her large cloud of candy floss while  they sat and watched people going by with prizes theyâd won from the arcade games.
__________
The faire was very fun, Sammy had tried out a few of the games, some even let Totodile try his hand, like the water gun booth, who let him compete and had even won a little balloon for him, which Sammy tied around his waist so he wouldn'tâ lose it. It looked like a very happy Voltorb just idly floating above him. Which meant he could run ahead and Sammy could still see where he was, but she made him promise not to go too far.
He stayed in her sight at least but was running around pointing at things he wanted to see and Sammy would follow, she didnât have the nerve to try out the rides though, at least not the fast roller coasters or bumper cars, Totodile didnât seem to mind and just watched them and cheered when a coaster went past them.
They did however get on the Ferris wheel, looking over the whole city at the top, she held him up so he could get a better view, which seemed to make him happy.
Once they got off, Sammy began heading back into the city checking her account to see if she could afford to stay at another hotel, when a thought occurred and she switched to heading for the PokĂ©mon centre, couldn't ât hurt to let Totodile have a check-up and have somewhere cosy to stay for the night at the same time.

Sammy had seen cities before but absolutely nothing compared to Castelia City. The skyscrapers dwarfed all others in comparison, and the bright shining sun glinted off the high windows making almost every inch of the city look bright and colourful. People hurried by, bumping into her as she made her way off the docks, they offered quick apologise, some claimed they were late or in a rush. She learned quickly there was a pattern to the foot traffic almost, and stuck to one side to go with the flow.
She walked passed the PokĂ©mon centre and almost went inside but stopped with her hand near the door, withdrawing it like it had snapped at her. It didnât feel right, using the PokĂ©mon centre without a PokĂ©mon...without a PokĂ©mon she ever intended to let out of its pokeball. She lightly touched her necklace making sure the battered old Great ball was still there, sighing in relief when she felt itâs weight against her chest.
She turned and left before anyone would notice her hesitation, she hoped anyway. She passed vendors and shops, looking at the bombastic displays and neon signs, she spotted the famous casteliacone vendor and hopped in line, picking one up for herself to try, almost smiling at the almost crystal like sprinkles on it, and quietly ate it while looking for a hotel to stay at.
She ended up at the park in the northern side of the city and froze, spotting a couple of trainers having a battle with what looked like a green and red monkey PokĂ©mon. Reflexively she reached for her pokedex but remembered she didnât bring it with her. She quickly turned to walk the other way when someoneâs hand caught her shoulder, and she yelped, losing her ice cream as her arm swung up, and covered the person's face with it.
âOi!â
Sammy flinched, backing away and looked up at the young man who was wiping the ice cream off his face with the t-shirt he wasnât wearing. She glanced down mumbling an apology.
âNo biggie, never had a casteliacone that way before. Sorry about that. Just wondered if you wanted to battle?â
âNO!â She flinched as she shouted it and backed up again. He just blinked at her looking confused.
âOh sorry, I thought, yâknow with the pokeball there yâknow. Not a trainer?â
âNo I..No Iâm not. Iâm sorry I just...new in town and was looking for somewhere to stay.â
He pondered and looked down the street she was heading. âThereâs a few down that way, how fancy you thinking?â
âNot super fancy, didnât bring much with me, just somewhere I can crash till..till I go.â
âHmm, Oh thereâs an old style one I think youâd like. Machamp arms. They have a practice Gy..â He spotted the look on her face and cleared his throat. âNo uh, well thereâs the new place along that street.â He pointed to the west road. âNot seen many people going in other than some odd space knight looking dudes, might be a themed thing but worth checking out, sorry Iâm not much help.â
She tried to smile but it felt so forced. âThanks, Iâll go take a look.â She turned again heading away, walking quickly so she wouldnât have to stop to talk to anyone else. She could feel her back starting to ache a bit. She sat on one of the benches and unfolded her chair from her backpack, thankful to whoever designed such a lightweight model. If she was honest she shouldâve used it from the boat but tried to use it as little as possible.
Once sheâd buckled in and put her cane through the loop on her backpack she was off, feeling some of the tension in her back ease up a bit as she rolled down the street, looking for this odd hotel. She wouldâve missed it had it not been for one of the oddly dressed âdudesâ as the boy had described, walk into the building. She followed shortly after and into the lobby. Immediately her gut twisted, feeling something was off.
The âknightsâ turned towards her looking shocked to say the least. âWhat do you ow! I mean can we help you miss?â One of them asked, rubbing at his ribs where an older man had elbowed him.
âUh Iâm sorry I thought. I was told this was a hotel, am I in the wrong place?â
The guys all looked at each other and spoke quickly in hushed tones.
âIâll uh just...look elsewhere, sorry to intrude.â
One of them looked over at her, she wasnât sure she liked where he was looking and quickly tucked her great ball inside her t-shirt and sped out of the door.
___________
She finally found somewhere suitable overlooking the sea, a small (by comparison) B&B over one of the cafeâs in the city. Run by an older couple of ladies who had been delighted to have a customer, and couldnât seem to do enough for her. She cringed a little but realised it wasnât out of pity, they seemed to be just like that with anyone. She spotted a small family and the two women acted like very doting aunties to the kids and the parentâs. It was pretty sweet, but she avoided spending too much time with them.
She explored the city some more and came back for dinner and got showered and put her things away for the night.
In the early hours Sammyâs sleep became restless. Nightmares were not uncommon and had lessened over the four years since the event, but now she was in an unfamiliar place her anxieties only spiked and replayed the events once more. She screamed and tried to reach her pokeballs to save her team but the fires and debris had her pinned, her Infernape looked angry and swung at her, then she was falling from the building looking up into the eyes of her waking nightmare that hung around her neck. She woke with a start having hit the floor, her throat sore from, what she assumed was a very real scream.
The two owners came rushing into her room, one holding a pokeball in hand but lowered it, seeing Sammy sprawled out on the floor tangled up in her sheets.
âOh dear, what happened?â One asked, helping lift her back onto the bed, while the other untangled her sheets. She wished they had just let her be but she was in no fit state to argue.
One hot chocolate and half an hour later Sammy felt a little better. She didnât tell them everything, only it was a nightmare about a monster PokĂ©mon. She could have sworn the great ball got heavier when she used the word monster, but blamed it on being exhausted. The ladies left her with her chocolate and went back to their rooms for the evening.
Sammy got very little sleep after that.
____________
The next few days were spent taking in the sights and avoiding PokĂ©mon battle spots. She tried a new cafĂ© and restaurant every day, and checked out the art gallery, she attended the movie theatre twice, thoroughly enjoying the heart-warming movies sheâd chosen to see. For once she didnât feel like falling to pieces and didnât look so dour by the fourth day. She still didn'tâ feel like smiling but she wasnât feeling as miserable now.
On day five she felt brave enough to head down to the beach, a short cab ride away from the main city. Sheâd put on a two piece but feeling a little self conscious threw on a pair of shorts and a vest on top. Thinking having her chair down there wasnât a good idea with sand all over the place she left it in her room and used her cane.
The taxi driver told her if she liked heâd pick her up again and left her his X-transceiver number so she could get the same ride back. She thanked him and picked up a drink from one of the booths and headed onto the sand, feeling it warm her right to the bone. She found a spot to set up her things, and put up the umbrella sheâd rented, and sat down, watching the waves roll in and out gently.
It was calming, and the salty breeze was almost delicious. She let her eyes close, resting her chin on her knees. She wasnât sure how long it had been but woke quickly feeling something nuzzling up against her side. She glanced down seeing a very unusual PokĂ©mon for the region. A Totodile was trying to climb into her lap and when he spotted sheâd seen him he yelped and darted  a few feet away. She just stared not sure what to make of him, and began looking around for someone, no one seemed to be coming towards her.
âHey lil buddy, you lost your trainer?â
âDile?â
âYou are somebodyâs pokemon right?â
âDiiiiile?â he tilted his head to one side and blinked.
Sammy scratched her head in confusion. âUhm.â
âHe says He doesnât have a trainer, and is wondering where your pokemon are.â A voice from above her spoke, and quickly at that. Sammy jumped, making a sharp pain shoot through her legs as they suddenly straightened.
She looked up at the man who spoke, having to look right up, not expecting him to be so tall or standing that close. She scooted back, a little disturbed by the invasion of personal space. âYou can understand poke-speak?â
The man nodded, looking at her oddly, she held her hand over her shirt, making sure the great ball was still there. Thankfully it was and hidden under her shirt. He looked back up at her face then over to the Totodile who had climbed onto Sammyâs legs.
âHe seems to be under the impression you are sad and in pain and require some company.â
Sammy looked down at the little blue croc who just gave her the biggest toothy grin sheâd ever seen and it made her heart ache. She patted his head gently. âWhat a thoughtful lil guy eh? Thank you. And uh..â She looked back up at the man, about to thank him for the translation but he had already walked off, his long green mane vanishing up the steps onto the path. Â âThanks I guess. Strange guy.â
âTotodile!â
âHeh glad you agree, nice of him to tell me what you were saying though. Donât worry about me little guy, Iâll be alright, it was nice of you though.â
The Totodile just curled up on her lap, not intending to go anywhere and began snoring softly while she scratched along his back.
When the sun began setting and the wind turned a little cooler, Sammy very carefully put the PokĂ©mon back on the sand and got up, he woke up and watched her and began following as she took her things back to the rental shack. She didnât notice him until the cab driver came back and smiled at him.
âHey bud you should be careful, the road isnât safe for little PokĂ©mon.â
âDile!â
âYours Miss?â The driver asked as she got into the front seat.
âNo uh, he just kept me company while I was oof!â She felt the PokĂ©mon dive into her lap, and into her stomach.
The driver chuckled. âAh right, I seen this one before, been hanging around the shack after he washed up on the beach, the owners fed him but he just wandered around the beach as if waiting for someone. Guess heâs picked you Miss.â
Sammy frowned, not looking too happy about that, she came here to avoid being a trainer again. Though, now she thought about it, companion PokĂ©mon were not uncommon. The Totodile in her lap gave her an amused look and shook his tail, daring her to throw him out. She sighed. âVery clever. Be all cute and helpful and now you want me to take you home huh?â
A dazzling toothy grin was her answer.
âAlright, uh is it ok if we take a brief detour so I can get him some food and a pokeball? Please?â
The driver chuckled again, making his moustache fluff up a bit. âSure thing miss. Know just the place.
___________
Sammy entered her room with an armful of items. A bag of pokefood, a silver bowl and a Totodile perched on her shoulder. She had a small bag of take out as well and carefully moved her bag to the small bedside table and placed his things on the bed. She measured out his food for him and placed the bowl on the floor while she curled up on the bed to eat her own.
Totodile was having none of it and lifted his bowl onto the bed and jumped up, sitting between her feet and eating with her. It made the corners of her mouth twitch but she said nothing and let him eat in peace.
Once sheâd thrown out her trash and got cleaned up, ending up giving Totodile a quick bath too they settled down for the night, and although she tried to get him in his pokeball he refused and curled up by her chest and held her arm over himself she didnât have the heart to force him and so fell asleep cuddling the little pokemon. There were no nightmares that night.
You! Yeah, you!

The doors to the Castelia city pokemon center opened, allowing a couple of newcomers into the building and out of the light rain that had started. Sammy followed shortly behind and wrung the water out of her hair before looking around to find a seat.Â
She slid into one of the open booths and put her backpack beside her, looking out of the window at the dockâs sheâd just come from. She tapped at her collar, to make sure her necklace was still there and turned towards the crowd of rowdy pokemon trainers in the center, smiling as they spoke to old friends or made new ones, their pokemon wandering around and playing among themselves.Â
She felt a pang of pain and longing for a moment and turned back to her table and picked up a discarded newspaper to get a feel for what was going on in the region. Sheâd never been here before and the city was intimidating at first glance.Â
After a few minutes she heard a cough and looked up.Â

Reporters have been sending in footage however some appears distorted. Between these airships a large Pokémon or an entity was coming out of nowhere. Local professor theorizes it could have been Giratina but deems it nearly impossible.
Next dayâs news: we are sad to announce. There were some fatalities amongst the casualties during yesterday's attack.
The nurse was speaking but she couldn't hear her. The news was still ringing in her mind. Dead. She refused to believe it. She couldn't. Her heart already hurt being away from them and the possibility that she would never see them again almost killed her. If the nurse's reaction of pushing the crash button was any indication.
------------------------------
Almost a year passed before Sammy could finally get up and move on her own. Several surgeries had made sure she would walk again with the aid of a cane, otherwise sheâd use a wheelchair for walks longer than ten minutes.
The champion had tried getting in touch with her and even offered the title, declaring she would have won or that her team's heroics were a testament to her character.
She refused.
Today however was different. The champion reached out again and offered to bring Sammy to the monument placed in the garden of the new league building.
The monument was shown live at the reopening ceremony and she nearly went mad. Why did they keep her team there and not send them home? It Occurred to her later that given what happened that it wouldn't be possible.
So Sammy found herself in a limo being driven up to the league and pushed in a chair up to the garden gates. When asked if she'd like an escort she declined and slowly hobbled through. She knew the champion was following and ignored them. Once she got in sight of the gravestone she could feel her heartbreak anew.
It was beautifully made out of polished granite, the likeness of her team's faces all looking up from a gold plaque along with their nicknames. She broke. The next few hours were the most painful sheâd ever been through, more than coming to in hospital, more than the physical therapy. Her world ended here and the universe clearly felt it. Rain struck and quickly soaked her through. The cold granite and gold faces looked like they were crying too. She couldn't help them, they weren't coming back. It wasn't fair. A year's worth of rage, frustration  and sorrow hit her all at once and she fell, sat with her back to the stone unable to face it and clutching her face as she let all these things out in a scream of absolute anguish.
It was midnight before the champion came back, worried that she hadn't gone home. Sammy was picked up and taken inside out of the rain and cold.
--------------------
When Sammy turned 23 she had recovered from her injuries but had not taken on another PokĂ©mon since. She kept the great ball on her at all times. Constantly worried that if anything happened to it the world would be at its mercy. She avoided trainers questions and pleas to battle and avoided interviews about what happened even more. When asked âhey weren't you that challenger whose team saved the league?â it tore her in half, wanting to lie just to get away or trying to say yes without breaking down.
A friend happened to suggest travelling a bit. She still had a trainer passport and a not too bad chunk of savings. So with little warning she did just that. Grabbed a boat ticket and just left. She wasn't sure what would happen but as long as it was as far away from painful questions and sympathetic looks it would be Better.
