I'm going to hold your neck tightly while I say this. a polyester bikini set which consists of four strings and four tiny triangles should not cost anywhere around what they're being sold for currently. I'm seeing prices around $120 to $150 for a whole bikini set. absolutely fucking insane.

if we're doing pricing according to reasonable materials and "reasonable" labor rates, a whole bikini set takes about 3 hours to make. let's assume you use shitty cheap polyester that's going to crap out in a year or two at $3 a yard. a typical bikini takes maybe max one yard of fabric to make. $3x1 yard plus 3 hours of labor at $12 an hour (which is already a dubiously high number bc these companies are NAWT paying their garment workers that much anyways) is somewhere within the ballpark of $40 total. tack on a reasonable profit margin and you price it on the rack for $60.

and please ☝️ don't play in my face right now about how much people should be paid bc that's at the discussion I'm having and that's not what I'm talking about rn. I'm not talking about your local ethical boutique, I'm talking about Victoria's Secret and Zara and Calzedonia and the rest of these shitty fucking fast fashion brands obviously using outsourced questionable labor and awful materials and then marking it up the ass just because they can.

fast fashion generally pisses me off because of the above issues but like. a swimsuit is the Platonic ideal of a simple, cheap garment and it's just upcharged up the ass. and for what. I would love to see the profit margins on swimwear versus literally any other clothing category. guarantee they are through the fucking roof as compared to any other garment category.
