I would like to know what beyond swords Kit knows and will talk about, specifically unintelligible things about weapons.

If...if he's up for yappin. >.>

Sorry this is late, I've been pretty tired the last couple of days.

Kit knows many things. He contains multitudes. Unfortunately, the weapons knowledge has crowded out lots of silly, unnecessary stuff like how to cook and what you're supposed to do on Valentine's Day when you have a boyfriend.

Most of what he rants about, in Alex's general direction at least, are just weapons hot takes of the nichest caliber. Zweihanders are good strength training but ultimately useless for anything but very basic melee crowd control, dual-wielding (sword and dagger only, heaven forbid you suggest dual-wielding proper swords) is great unless there's even the slightest chance you'll need your off-hand for anything else (in his line of work, he usually does)...

He's also constantly learning more about weapons from distant cultures thanks to either Tumblr or his boring weapons forums, so Alex hears about that a lot. Kit wishes he had a use for a khopesh.

(Alex likes to counter any 'x weapon is useless' rants, even the ones that go all the way over his head, with 'Says the guy who readily throws half of his weapons at people and has to replace them constantly,' and he usually doesn't get any further that that before Kit throws something at him)

Astero Halcyon is one of the smartest beings in his galaxy, and perhaps his entire universe. He can speak to all of the science and all the engineering every discovered, but his specialties are nanogenetics specifically the engineering of the human genome.

This is... not by choice. Instead, he's spent so long working on Bel Thurston's deteriorating DNA that Astero knows everything about it. About Bel specifically, but in so doing he's had to map the Human genome completely. He's also had to develop techniques and machines to be able to treat the very specific issues Bel has, brought on by Astero's mentor's unethical research.

I am a very rambling person, and am known to go on tangents, rabbit-holes and just yap and infodump about basically anything. So, of course, a fair handful of characters have inherited this trait of mine.

Luna from Frequency: Shattered Gods comes to mind, for one. Being an academic, getting her started on anything topic she's interested in will take up the rest of your afternoon. This includes (but is not limited to), archaeology, history/mythology/religion(s) of Locke [fictional country Frequency takes place in], language of Locke, linguistics, and also cryptography.

She won't stop once you get her started.

Kasi (Frequency: Kindred Spirits) is similar, but is only really limited in whatever she finds interesting. She is just really excitable and loves talking about anything that catches her eye. (And Rain, she will not shut up about Rain if you mention him)

Lukas & Karve (Frequency: Wounded Reflection) both share a vested interest in philosophy, swordsmanship, and the nature of the soul. Anything in that vain, or a topic they are more knowledgeable in, and you'll be there all day.

As for me, as I mentioned I will just yap. My stories are one thing, of course. But I love rambling about various scientific fields and studies/discoveries, various mythologies and religions, and music! ♪(´▽｀)

I told myself I wouldn’t talk about this WIP until I knew more about it, but this is the perfect question for it!

In The Language of Wolves, the main plot centers around the protagonist, who lives next to a shapeshifter-infested forest, finding and learning to communicate with a shapeshifter-human hybrid.

This character is unique to the story (and to the world, mostly) as shapeshifters aren’t sapient. They’re able to speak in that they’re able to mimic human noises, but they’re not all that intelligent and don’t understand what they’re saying.

The character (unnamed, as of now) is also not all that smart. Certainly smarter than the average shapeshifter, but not nearly on the same level as a human. Alone, basically. He lives in the same forest as the rest of his kind, but he mostly fends for himself.

Well, obviously, there are literal mothers in my stories. But very few exist outside of backstories or offhanded mentions. Such as Lukas or Tinder's mother(s).

In a reverse sense, there are characters who become mothers by literally having children. Although, I think this is literally like three characters? Namely Kasi, Skyla, and Maya between stories.

However, I can't not talk about perhaps the most important mother in my stories:

Vistege Aurora.

She is the mother of Dawn in Frequency: Forsaken, and also serves as one of the three major antagonists for the story. Thus, she's pretty important.

For Dawn, she serves as a goal to overcome; to kill out of revenge for ruining her life and trying to kill her all her life. Whereas for the story, she serves as the cold, uncaring nature of war in a world ruled by those with no disregard for people.

Now, while she is by no means a good mother (I think that point is self-evident), she is the most important/impactful mother in any of my stories.

Hehe yeah I do!!

Danica from LFS is sort of a mother figure to Donovan after he runs away, or more accurately is chased from home, and she cares for him and convinces the Fallen Stars to take him in, even going so far as to vouch for him later in the story even after he'd already joined the Tempest Creed and was labelled a traitor by the Stars.

Then we have Ophelia, who is Aurora and Donovan's actual mother. She's a scholar and poet, devoted to research and poetry and the collection of history and stories and she taught the twins to play the piano, guitar, and the violin!

Then we have Amalia, who is a crippled daughter of a local healer and apothecary, and despite having a rather pessimistic and no-nonsense attitude, she's very kind, caring, and nurturing towards her friends and isn't afraid to be the voice of reason and knock some sense into them, sometimes literally with her crutch. She's not older than 17-18 but she's wise and mature beyond her years.

I don't have a lot of mom characters in the prequel yet, but Rhykan's mother is named Willow and she's a kind weaver and loves singing for her children.

Riven's mother has yet to be given a name but she's a Siren and would frequently bite or screech at anyone who messed with her weird and curious little son. She may be the reason his father is absent and potentially dead (thanks to my siren's mating instincts being similar to that of scorpions) but she did like him and told Riven all about him and gifted him the compass that belonged to his father!

Ooh! So I tried to create several dozen species of plants and animals for the alien forest in CitC. All of them are me mashing together details of current and extinct Earth species, some with an added twist. The moss mimics are like large cats with the tails and claws of clouded leopards, the camouflage of leaf tail geckos, the eating habits of ambush predators, and high intelligence. A dangerous plant has the mix between stinging nettle and jellyfish poison delivery (tiny needles that inject if brushed against), the toxins of botulinum bacteria, and the appearances of vines ending like fiddlehead ferns. Atlas trees are the height of ancient trees, have the roots of banyans / strangler figs, have the canopy with the crown shyness seen in the Amazon Rainforest, and hosts plants on its branches (epiphytes)

In short, non-humanoid hybrids are something I’ve thought a lot about

Hybrids? Huh, this is an interesting one.

If I can wrestle werewolves into this box so that they count, then sure, yeah, I've got werewolves. Lots of them. Kit thinks there are too many. They basically are in the real world, so Kit spends a lot of time trying to keep that bit quiet. Nobody wants werewolves hanging about on street corners, you see, it's unsightly. And then the vampires try to eat them, and it makes just the most awful mess.

There's also one top-secret hybrid I absolutely cannot talk about. So there's that.

Outside of What Was Borrowed- I wrote a flash fiction story last week about an alien that merged with a human. Does that count as a hybrid? Can I count that? I'm counting it.

I wished I'd had more words for that story. I wanted to explore the body-horrorish aspect of it more (and also the power/control/conflict aspect of it), but I ran out of words and ultimately decided I couldn't do both that and the setup, which I'd already written (sometimes this writer is lazy).

Its funny, as a "recovering mom friend" you'd think I would, but I don't actually have many "maternal" characters.

I think I have opportunity in my Space Opera to create some maternal characters. I'm working on reworking some of the characters in that in order to let the story progress, as well as to smooth out some tropes that turned out not for the best.

There's a character I have who is somewhat a "space pirate princess" sort of archetype, but I think she's the one whose probably built on "motherhood" ideals. Its not that she's gentle or that she is reassuring, but its that she does the needful, won't stand for the people she cares about to not be taken care of, or not take care of themselves. I guess you could say she's a "tough love" sort of mom friend, but she's that way towards her entire tribe. Her people are nomadic, and their leadership is decentralized. She's a rebel among her traditions, but not because she doesn't value them. On the contrary, its because she loves them and wants to protect them. She will do anything to provide for her people, to ensure their children have futures, and to ensure their history is not lost.

But she's all of that not in a "heroic" way, she doesn't think she's a soldier, she doesn't think she's doing anything special. Its what she should do, to make sure everyone else has a place to sleep at night, and can eat something warm in the morning. She's the "grueling work out of love because she wants to and because she loves them" sort of maternal character. She'll hum you to sleep stroking your hair, but she'll also call you out on being a dumbass to your face if it means you stay safe and healthy.

Kit could talk about weapons all day long, and Alex regularly lets him because, dammit, someone has to get that boy's eyes to light up like that. It's practically a public service. He's happy to listen even when it gets so far from swords- which he understands- as to become utterly unintelligible.

Alex isn't really an infodumper, he fears that would make him dreadfully boring and so he does not do it, but if he had to pick a topic- he's got more insight into the history of music and the rise of British post-punk than you'd expect at first glance. And he could probably make a lecture on the subject interesting, too.

As for me... well, anyone who knows me is aware that I'm willing to get up on my soapbox over everything and anything that catches my eye. I'm fairly knowledgeable about a few things, but don't often get to talk for long until someone cuts me off out of boredom, so I suppose I wouldn't know.

Ice hockey, maybe. If you want to hear about the minutiae of my local team's lineup for the year, or the history of the league in which they play.

HEHEHEHEE THIS IS PERFECT FOR THE PREQUELLLLL

I've got several hybrids but my most interesting one actually fits the MerMay vibes perfectly!!

His name is Riven, born to his siren mother and his half-human half-naiad father! He's extremely unique to the story because he shows my interpretation of sirens and naiads in the LFS universe!

Due to his unique hybrid nature, he's very valuable in the black market and is currently being kept as both property and a pet by his current owner. He's very curious and naive but he's good at reading people!

Another hybrid in the story is Vana, who is a cross between her avian father and her Pyreid (fire nymph) mother! She's naturally drawn to freedom and novelty and currently does freelance work for whoever happens to pay the most for the most fun-sounding job and she doesn't really have loyalty to any one side!

She was initially drawn to the group because she was intrigued by them but stayed when they freed her from a hunter's trap with every reason to abandon her, but they didn't and now she's fiercely protective of them!!

Both hybrids stared, wide-eyed at the city around them, both enamored by the larger-than-life skyscrapers and the cars glinting like jewels in the sun as they sped past them. Even in the biggest cities, neither had seen this many humans in one place before. They were all the same, yet different. All bustling around and going about their lives. Riv instinctively edged closer to Vana, overwhelmed by all the new sights and smells and the sheer volume of people around them. Vana was mostly unfazed, but opened one of her winds to partially shield him from the chaos. In the sea of humans, Vana's bright red wings and feathers and Riven's scales and tail more than stood out and brought on a litany of strange looks and even a few muttered "weirdos" and "freaks". One young person bumped into them, looked the pair up and down, before grinning widely. "Nice costumes!" He chirped with a double thumbs-up before continuing on his way, earning two confused head tilts in return, but the boy was already gone, disappeared into the crowd.

Mention Keep Helgaurd once and this boy is ripped out of his introvert shell and will stare at you like a starving dog to ask him further about it so he can yap his head off in great detail. (Hes so very disgustingly over educated on the topic he can tell you the exact codes they used to intercept the enemy and the material composition of the uniforms the soldiers wore and what the general ate for breakfast before leading said attack.)

Kairo probably weapons and different methods for killing/ torture (hes an ex assassin and isnt an eager infodumper like Blake but you ask him and you're going to get an answer in detail that will make you want to throw up)

Raidan- explosives and demolition. He knows wayy to much about explosives and the weak points of most structures

There are merfolk in my world, of the pinniped variety (they're not selkies because they don't shapeshift with a seal skin). They've played an important role in the history of international trade and the creation of an interspecies sign language!

there are also centaurs, who I designed as chalicothere people with chimeric twin anatomy, having one twin absorbed in the womb to create that double-torso body structure. Their spiritual beliefs are heavily centered on this, believing in a sort of twin reincarnation where they switch places with their twin each time they die and are reborn. The chimeric twin anatomy also leads to a higher rate of congenital health issues and stillbirths than other people. The centaurs have remained isolated from other people for many generations, but they're beginning to ease into broader society now.

and then there's the quetzalin! my bird folk. unlike the merfolk and centaurs, they did not evolve slowly into their form, they are actual hybrids created by a Life deity through many tricky experiments. Some of their genetic makeup is actually human, the only remnant of humanity since they went extinct a few thousand years prior to my main stories. The only other remnant of humanity is the dwarves, who are a cousin hominid species. As a result of their weird hybrid genetics, the quetzalin occasionally have hybrid children with some other people, but it doesn't always go well and never results in fertile offspring. Many of these hybrids have some congenital problems, and it's not uncommon for them to be stillborn or die very young.

and for other hybrids, it's become more common for orcs and gnomes to have children together. They are very closely related, gnomes are basically just small orcs. It's not unheard of for gnomes to develop conditions that trigger more orcish puberty and have a secondary growth spurt or grow tusks. the more their people mingle, the more likely it is that they'll someday revert to being the same people again, as they once were.

Elves, drow, and their other cousins the stroi are not quite as closely related, despite looking more similar and having nearly the same body proportions. They can also hybridize, but it's more likely to result in infertile offspring and congenital health issues. The chances of these issues occurring in their hybrid offspring is very dependent on which two groups are producing the hybrid. it is therefore also possible to have a three-way hybrid if one of the possible fertile hybrids has a child with someone from the third group. the three-way hybrids are never fertile though.
