A lot of people have pointed out how hypocritical it was for Eadwulf be all "fucking academics" about the Cobalt Soul as a wizard himself, but I'd argue it gives a lot of insight into the values Trent instilled in them.

Neither Astrid nor Eadwulf seem to be interested in the study of magic for the sake of knowledge. And that is likely due to Trent pushing them to study for strength, for power. He does not need them to make any sort of leaps in magical theory or to create new spells. He needs them to be able to infiltrate, spy, and kill.

And, there is something to be said about how thoroughly he squashed their senses of curiosity because curiosity is not a virtue for a Volstrucker.

Compare to Essek (right now) and Caleb (in the beginning of his flashback while he was still at his home and the certainly we will get more) who both show a great amount of curiosity.

Anyway, join me in mourning the loss of Astrid and Eadwulf's natural curiosity, yet another thing Trent has to answer for. I can only hope that the events of the show allow them to have at least a bit of it restored. Won't be for some time now, but yeah...

Oh well. Just finished watching The Mighty Nein (Campaign). Stopped experiencing mighty crisis, now I will think about how good the story is, how amazing all the characters are, and is it Thursday yet.

I hate to be a party pooper* but I’m confused by the recent surge I’ve seen of people commenting on show-only fans’ posts for the M9 cartoon that the Caleb x Molly ship “would have been canon” when like. I don’t think there’s any evidence that that is true at all.

Right after episode 26 of Campaign 2 aired, both Liam and Taliesin specifically rejected any perceived feelings between the two characters. At the 2018 GenCon panel, Liam said “I know people wanted Caleb to have stars in his eyes for Molly, but that isn’t a focus of his and it wasn’t something I thought about.” At NYCC that year, Taliesin said Molly had a crush on everyone in the party “except Caleb” because he didn’t seem in a good place for anything. Both of these answers caused HUGE drama in the fandom at the time (I’m surprised the fandom memory of this seems to be completely gone). Whatever anyone may have years later said with a more diplomatic approach of “oh well who knows anything could have happened all headcanons are valid**” that was absolutely not something the players considered a possibility at the time, and not something the players were working for or intending.

To have the whisper down the lane fandom memory of this somehow come to be “oh Taliesin was intent on romancing Liam and Widomauk absolutely would have happened!” is bizarre to me. I’m not sure how many people repeating it were in the fandom in 2018, but it just isn’t a reflection of what was actually stated in C2.

**This is part of why I wish the actors would be less diplomatic at panels. Like yeah sure anything “could” have happened but that’s a nothing answer calibrated to not upset anyone or cause fandom drama. And yeah like, unfortunately I can see why they want to avoid that and just placate everyone. But creators should be meaner to their audience actually and I think more CR players should go back to the style Liam answered questions with during C1 (“watch and find out.” “Uh, duh” “no, that’s not what my character feels at all”).

CAMPAIGN 2 SPOILERS!!!

So, there’s this mage in the campaign who tattles on the MN when they reach the Bright Queen’s throne room, saying the Nein are loyal to the Empire, yadda yadda. Since Essek saw Caleb and Nott in the room with the Beacon, I do wonder if this part will be played by him now. Would be interesting.

Also, it seems like Yasha’s people worship the Storm Lord. I don’t know if that was in the campaign or if it was just Yasha who stumbled upon him, but it’s interesting. It seems like Yasha either doesn’t follow his teachings, or is just less religious than her wife. (That’s the vibe I got, at least.) I wonder if she reaches out to the SL because of Zuala. :(

ALSO, curious about how the MN hold onto the Beacon. Maybe they find out the Gentleman is giving it back to the Empire. Maybe they keep it to help Yasha. Maybe Caleb decides to be greedy. Or they have to go on the run before they can return it? Or Yasha takes it?? Possibilities are endless.

Side note: I wanted three things in this episode (Scrollgate, the tower explosion, and the confrontation in the sewers). Got ‘em all. :)

I really wish the episode descriptions didn’t include massive spoilers. Episode 7’s summary says “Essek betrays Verrat after a devastating loss”. Thankfully, we all predicted this would happen, but damn. It happens near the end of the episode! It’s a big deal!!

Definitely going to be careful not to glance at the next episode description. I don’t want to spoil how Yasha shows up, or if someone dies, or how they steal the Beacon, etc, etc.

I dreamt the MN delivered the magical compass to the Gentleman and he used it to locate the Beacon, then tasked the MN with stealing the Beacon for him.

While it was just a nonsense dream, it did get me thinking about that compass. It’ll probably have some relevance to the plot, right?

Campaign 2 spoilers (sort of; discussing differences between campaign and show):

Not sure I’m understanding the modify memory vs. old-fashioned manipulation debate. Correct me if I’m remembering wrong, but Caleb was never magically forced to kill his parents. It was either stated or implied that Trent put a false memory in Caleb’s head of his parents being traitors, but Trent never forced Caleb to kill them. Caleb made that decision on his own, because killing traitors of the Empire is what he was trained to do.

In the show, Trent presents false evidence to Caleb and—once again—Caleb decides to kill his parents based on that evidence. It feels very similar to what happens in the campaign, though I would argue that non-magical manipulation is even more frightening. It paints Trent as even more dangerous.

That’s partially why it took Caleb so long in the campaign to shift the blame towards Trent, because even though he was groomed to do this terrible thing, he still did it.

So whether the evidence was planted by modify memory or by a list of names, it still works out the same way. At least in my opinion.

honestly i was mostly wondering how it was going to affect his escape from the sanatorium/if they were going to touch that at all

if i remember right: he was basically catatonic/generally very unwell for a long time, and (in the comic at least) it's shown that the undoing of the fake memory was one of the things that got through to him and allowed him to wake up and escape

it'll be interesting to see how this changes if they decide to flash back to his time at Vergesson (if they decide to at all)

That’s true. They could still magically mess with his mind to keep him restrained if they wanted to keep it similar, or have him locked away with something that repressed magic, like an anti-magic cell. (I dunno, I’m just guessing.) But if they don’t answer it next episode, maybe we’ll get those flashbacks when they either visit or break into Vergesson.

I was doing some muscle studies and decided to turn one into Yasha Nydoorin. I got lost in the sauce a little with this one. I don't feel like I did Yasha justice, but I also want to feel okay with posting things I'm not 100% happy with. Sorry Ashley Johnson, I'll do better job on Yasha another day, because she deserves it.

All I could think about during the scene where Nott finds half the party frozen by the rune and can translate what Jester is saying, is that moment in campaign where Laura is singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with her mouth fully shut. Lmao.
