The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) Review
My boyfriend and I decided we would take a break from watching films in bed to watching films in the cinema. I drove us down to East Coast Cinema in Lowestoft for the six oāclock showing of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), we were a few minutes late having scoffed tea too fast and realising there was no 7 oāclock showing. But we were fine, purchasing our tickets and ordering two Pepsisā for Ā£21. Not bad, I thought, or maybe I was more grateful that I was giving money to an independent business rather than handing over money to massive corporations like the Odeon. I learned recently that cinemas earn their money from the food rather than the tickets, meaning I wonāt say no to a hot dog if offered.Ā
We sat down in the centre aisle and relaxed into the carpeted swing back seats. None of those premium seats here, luckily, it didn't matter which seat we sat in. My boyfriend and I were plagued forever with sore knees.Ā
As the adverts came to a close, the voices of kids raised accordingly. Screams of laughter and inane questions to parents uttered through little mouths like; āWhen will the donkey Kong bit come in.ā to which the Mother replied, āI donāt know, sweetheart.āĀ
A part of me wanted to shout out Spoilers!! But I refrained and tried to ignore the sounds of kids being told off. Luckily, the film was good enough that I didnāt care.Ā
The film moved quickly through each plot point, introducing new goals for each character. I was happy, but un-surprised, that Peach was sold as a heroine rather than a damsel in distress figure and Mario was the one to learn how to beat the villain; Bowser. Played by Jack Black he brought all the things youād think Jack Black would bring to a kids movie including, a musical number and electric guitar playing minions.Ā
I found that the pace of the film the best part, I suspected since it was a kids film (and a Mario film) there was a lack of explaining needed. Even as a non game player, like any other human Iād forayed into a game of Mario Kart in my time so I got plenty of enjoyment from the movie.Ā
To conclude, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an easy watch, both for adults and children. Even if you donāt play the games, there is lots of fun to be had with this film. My boyfriend and I left, (happy to be rid of the screaming kids) and glad that we ventured out of our beds for this one.Ā
