Night Melodies

Sasha didn't sleep at all that night. After the kiss with Jem, her emotions were all over the place and she didn't want to think about the girl who'd broken her heart. Texting other women in her contacts to come over and keep her company proved futile, as her "are you up" texts went unanswered or ignored. So Sasha tried crawling into bed alone, hoping that maybe sleep would overtake her suddenly, or eventually if she stared up at the crack in her ceiling long enough. After an hour or so of laying there on her back, her thoughts got the best of her. Memories of late nights giggling and sharing songs with Jem creeped up on her. She couldn't bare it any longer. With a heavy sigh, she stretched her body and stepped out of bed. She reached her long arms under the bed and pulled out her guitar, shaking her head all the while at how pathetic she was being. But her heart was heavy, and so she reached for the pen and notepad on her nightstand and sat it down next to her. Cross legged and hunched over on her bed with guitar in hand, Sasha began strumming the strings. Once she found her rhythm, she slowly started to hum, and eventually began putting words to the melody. The music eased her hurt, but even so, tears streamed freely down her face, and she didn't bother to wipe them.

Glow

Cindy watched Sandy’s chest gently rise and fall. Tiny beads of sweat were still trickling down her skin. Cindy felt heat rise to her face, remembering how moments before how long her fingers had fumbled along Sandy’s thighs, how she wasn’t sure what to do with her lips or how to position her body on top of her. They had settled on a position that suited the both of them, laying side by side on Sandy’s feather soft pillows, they kissed gently as their hands roamed and warmed any and every body part they could find.

It was the second time they’d made love. Much different than the first, where it had taken them both by surprise. It was rushed, and messy and wonderful, but Cindy was glad for another chance.

She ran a hand through her coils and grimaced at the wetness she felt there. She cursed silently, wishing that the summer heat would cut her a break. Surely Sandy wouldn’t want to curl up next to another sweaty body.

Before she could sneak out of the bed to clean up, she felt Sandy stir beside her. Cindy froze for a moment. The bed groaned under Sandy’s shifting body, and Cindy watched Sandy roll over onto her back, the peeking sun’s rays shined on her dark skin. Cindy smiled and down to kiss Sandy between her breasts. Sandy groaned in response and shooed her away with a free hand. 

“Go on Cin,” she mumbled. “Quit botherin me.” 

Cindy ignored her and planted another kiss on her neck. This elicited a soft giggle from Sandy. 

“You’re glowin baby,” Cindy whispered. “I caint help it.”

Sandy sighed. Cindy forgot about creeping out of bed to clean up and instead found herself sliding inbetween Sandy’s thighs. She was welcomed, sleepily, but eagerly too. They kissed lightly, and then deeply, and within moments they were side by side again, fumbling their hands and sweating in the heat. Cindy held Sandy close and kissed all the places where the sun didn’t reach. She wanted to make sure every inch of her glowed.

What’s Taken

Jem and Courtney were out of the apartment when Frankie found one of her old empty pill bottles. She was sweeping up stray hair from the carpet when the broom slipped a little further than intended under the bed and rolled the bottle against her foot. 

She froze. 

Reaching down, she picked up the tiny yellow bottle and sunk to the floor. She shut her eyes tight to stop the tears from falling, and felt her chest rise and fall quickly. 

“You’re alright.” she whispered to herself. She brought herself back to her feet, and sat down on the edge of the bed.

“You’re okay.” she breathed. “You’re okay.”

Frankie hadn’t had to use medication in months, but the memories of what it was like to be on them lingered from time to time. They had made everything feel hazy, as if she were walking through a dream that she couldn’t wake up from. Food didn’t have any taste, feelings didn’t have any weight.

 Frankie shook her head at the memory of a particularly restless night where she was so uncomfortable in her own skin that she groaned for hours into her pillow, pulling Jem and Courtney out of their sleep to comfort her in any way that they could. 

But those effects, she remembered, still weren’t the worst of it. 

Sadness was something she knew would never truly leave her. Like the changing of the seasons, the rise and fall of the sun, sadness was a constant friend who’s presence was always felt. 

But Frankie found one particular way to curb the heaviness of the sadness in her body, and that was by way of feeling another woman’s body on her own. There was something about getting and giving pleasure that quieted the babbling doubts and insecurities that bounced back and forth in her head all day. There was something about making women smile and groan, something about their softness and their laughter that made Frankie feel like life wasn’t just something to get through. That she didn’t have to cloak herself in a shroud of misery whenever she felt the familiar pull of depression on her, but rather she could invite a pretty girl into her bed and somehow let her body find a way to right the mind again with a night of passion. 

The medicine took away these pleasures, totally and completely. 

Frankie gripped the bottle and chuckled a little to herself, remembering many frustrating nights where even Jem and Courtney’s skimpiest outfits couldn’t warm her below the belt. She was numb, sore even, to the prospect of touching or being touched. 

With a sigh, Frankie stood up and shuffled her way into the kitchen. She knew it didn’t do well to dwell on the past. She tossed the empty bottle into the kitchen trash can. Then she let out a sigh and went back to the bedroom. 

She crawled onto the bed, laid down and unbuttoned her pants. She slid her hand down into her underwear and shivered at the contact she made. As she fell into a steady rhythm, she found herself wishing that Jem and Courtney would come home soon.

oh oh,

as part of the ‘getting to know me’ thing for my students, i told them about the book i’m writing to kinda get them motivated and into the idea of writing about things they enjoy. and someone asked me what the title is for my book, and I said I didn’t know

and one of my students suggested “summer is the new black” and i’m seriously considering it like not even joking lol

i was gonna do a big long tumblr post about this but basically I created one of my characters, Jem, to help me recover with my eating disorder and its just really weird that two years later I still have to tell myself that it’s okay to eat.
