“...is what you think you have to do really worth it?”

With that, the lighthearted tone of the conversation had fully shifted. Sans wasn’t looking at you anymore. His mouth was pulled into a hard line, and his brow bone had furrowed.

“Where did this come all of a sudden? What do you mean?”

“…maybe sometimes it’s better to take what’s given to you,” he explained slowly, as if trying to choose his words carefully. “things down here…aren’t so bad are they? i mean, decent food and drink, a nice roof over your head, some quality friends…wouldn’t that be a pretty good life?”

You didn’t respond.

“it’s asking a lot, i understand that,” he continued. His gaze slowly moved up to meet yours, all while his hand gently reached across the table to find yours. Your very Soul leaped as he gently squeezed your hand. “but…would you consider it? would you consider staying?”

There was something unspoken there. A hint that he was referring to staying for something greater than the mundane things he had listed.

Would you stay…for me?

You were quiet, letting his words sink in. Even with the silence between the two of you, you could feel Sans’ anticipation. Several different feelings welled up within your chest all at once. Breathing suddenly became a chore as you struggled to find a proper response.

A part of you wanted to accept his proposal, to stay here with all your new friends and give up on this risky feat of yours.

Yet the other part of you was much louder, voicing her fears and worries of staying as well as her hopes and dreams of succeeding.
