(Rant) I think you already made a post on this but I literally HATE how the ATLA narrative frames it as being Azula’s fault in the end, or at least partly. I love ATLA with all my heart but the way they frame it as being Azula’s fault in the finale ticks me off. Like she did lots of bad things but in the end it’s the fucking adults fault for misleading her or NOT leading her. Oh- and she’s only FOURTEEN. If Zuko can change why can’t she??? Why can’t she be leaded the right way?
Oh man, I can't even remember how many times I've mentioned that the narrative framing around Azula's character was just weird at times, lmao. And I absolutely agree with you. It's honestly weird the way how the writers did it. Like on the one hand, they framed her downfall as being tragic and everything, while simultaneously making it seem as if she has herself to blame for everything that happened to her, as if the adults played no part in it whatsoever. It's frustrating. I actually saw a post about this on reddit a few months ago. The op was talking about Azula, and they were saying the typical anti rhetoric about her character....and then they said something that just completely shocked me: they said that the narrative framing around Azula's character was odd at times, especially when you compare it to how the other villains in the show were framed, and how the writers spoke about them in commentaries. They were like "she was a 14 year old girl, wtf was up with that framing?". When someone on REDDIT of all places when it comes to this fandom, can realize and point out the narrative framing when it came to Azula? You know that's bad.

what terminally online looks like will depend on your primary platform. twitter brain worms look very different from tiktok brain worms and tumblr brain worms are a whole other species

Nico's like Percy's adopted little brother and I love that so much. He's Percy's little emo Italian street rat that he claimed as his own. Percy takes care of Nico the same way Grover took care of him I'm in shambles
reylos crying on twitter because Adam Driver explicitly confirmed that Bendemption was never originally in the plans for Kylo....this is justice for the last 8 years, actually
"they were just going to let the last Skywalker die as a Dark Sider???" well he wouldn't have BEEN the last Skywalker if Rian had actually followed through with the clearly foreshadowed revelation that Rey was one and let Finn be the nobody Jedi from nowhere as he was supposed to be
I just.
Eight years of arguing with Reylo stans about how Kylo's trajectory was to show us the long fall of someone continually choosing the Dark even as his father (who he explicitly acknowledged that he still loved!) and other people in his life repeatedly offered him the same choice Luke gave to Vader in ROTJ.
Eight years of noting that the point of Kylo, for JJ Abrams, was that you can be raised with love, support, and stability and still CHOOSE to make bad choices and continue to do so even when offered alternatives.
Eight years of pointing out that Finn and Kylo were deliberate character foils in TFA! Eight years of saying that Finn was supposed to show that goodness can come from anywhere, even a stormtrooper raised as a child soldier with no one to turn to, while Kylo was supposed to show that evil can come from anywhere, even a beloved Rebel's child with a stable childhood with lots of support figures.
Eight years of trying to get through to them that Finn and Kylo were supposed to represent the two choices Rey had as the sequel trilogy's Skywalker: to follow Finn's choices (Luke's choices) and stay in the Light, or follow Ben's choices (Anakin's choices) and surrender to the Dark.
Eight years has led to this moment of Adam Driver casually going "evolving into Ben Solo…that was never part of it" and “Rian took it into a different direction” in an interview on a random Tuesday night. I feel the vindication in this Chili's tonight and it is SWEET
#yes Finn got screwed #but JJ put pieces on the board because he HAD to have that cliffhanger of an ending #TLJ is forced to take place the SAME DAY as TFA #I have a lot of thought on this subject#(I liked TFA and TLJ) (TROS could have been made better) (@apathyneverlandedonthemoon)
just saw these tags and wanted to make a quick response. No one "forced" TLJ to start less than 3 days after TFA ended. TFA ends with the following post-movie status quo:
Rey training with Luke on Ahch-To for an indeterminate amount of time
Finn in a coma after being gravely wounded by Kylo
Kylo being picked up by Snoke and Hux to "finish his training" after fully committing to the Dark Side via killing Han
The Resistance (led by Leia and Poe) having scored a meaningful but costly blow against the First Order's ability to oppress and kill people
The First Order having lost their planet-killing weapon and quite a lot of their forces
a vacuum of political power due to the combined blows of "the New Republic's capitol planet got blown up" and "The First Order does not have the resources to restore the Empire due to the aforementioned successful attack on Starkiller Base"
None of that necessitated Rian writing a story that picked up 2 days later. In fact, Rian deciding to start TLJ less than 2 days after TFA ended is the root of many of TLJ's problems! He didn't have to do that at all!
It went against Star Wars tradition (it's the only movie that doesn't have at minimum a one year timegap between them), was utterly illogical (How does "The First Order reign!" less than 3 days after Starkiller got blown up? how does the First Order have enough resources to come after the Resistance less than 72 hours after they were soundly defeated at Starkiller? Why is Snoke's priority to "finish Kylo's training" at the end of TFA and it suddenly doesn't matter at all in TLJ? Why does Rey entertain the "temptation" of Kylo less than a week after being kidnapped/tortured by him and then watching him kill Han?), and directly hurts the narrative direction of the plot!
Kylo's potential redemption holds more weight if he's spent some time fully committed to the Dark Side. Rey and Luke's conflict feels more real if they have an actual relationship with each other. Rey being called "The Last Jedi" would make more sense if she'd had more than 2.5 lessons of Jedi training over a span of a week. The First Order's sudden inexplicable ability to track people through hyperspace 3 days after that wasn't an available option to track down BB-8 makes more sense if they spent time after Starkiller developing it. The lack of support the Resistance recieves from their supposed allies is more understandable if the political and financial vacuum left by the New Republic's destruction has made them a true bootstrap effort relying on faith rather than knowledge. It makes far more sense for Kylo to kill his master and take his place, setting him up as IX's "Big Bad" villain, if he has actually finished his training and considers himeslf to have 'outgrown' Snoke. I could go on.
The timeframe for TLJ had absolutely nothing to do with anything J.J. Abrams left for Rian in TFA and everything to do with creative decisions Rian purposefully and deliberately made of his own accord.
The Force Awakens was no more a cliffhanger than Empire Strikes Back was when it left us with Han captured, frozen in carbonite, and on his way to Jabba as Luke, Leia, and Lando planned to rescue him. It was no more a cliffhanger than The Phantom Menace was when it left off with Anakin as a brand-new padawan to Obi-Wan while the threat of the Sith loomed in the background. It was no more a cliffhanger than Revenge of the Sith was when it ended with Obi-Wan delivering Luke to Owen and Beru as the Empire rose and the Jedi who survived Order 66 were being hunted down. And yet the movies following those cliffhangers always had a sizeable time gap between them.
Unresolved threads don't necessitate an immediate aftermath follow-up, nor do they need a wholly illogical immediate follow-up that directly contradicts the narrative threads the previous story left off on. Rian chose to do that, and it was to the detriment of the movie's story/characters and fucked over the overall plot of the trilogy to the point where TROS had few avenues to be a satisfying conclusion even if it hadn't been one of the messiest movies in existence.
I made a crash course about this.
was literally thinking “wow sounds like something john green would say” before i saw the crash course part and realized this is in fact john green’s account
Thinking about my completely unsupported headcanon that it was Lu Ten who ordered The Southern Raiders to attack the Southern Water tribe in search of the Last Waterbender as part of his aging into the military and as a future Fire Lord.
Yon Rha walked into the opulent dragon-themed office, known to be the working space of Crown Prince Iroh while stationed home in the Fire Nation. The leader of the Southern Raiders was due for his next assignment.
As he approached Iroh's door, he could hear voices inside. Iroh's notable guffaw was one of them, and it was a relief to hear General in good spirits.
Opening the door, Yon Rha prepared to salute the general out of habit - yet he was caught off guard by the presence of two others.
On one side of Iroh was his son, Prince Lu Ten; only today he was not clothed in regal attire. Instead, the young man was bedecked in traditional Fire Nation armor. It made him look years older than he was, and more like his father, as though someone had taken the stout general and stretched him out a bit into a taller version of himself.
But it was the figure on Iroh's other side that caused Yon Rha to freeze, just before he fell to the floor in reverence.
Fire Lord Azulon stood next to his eldest son, his regal visage unflinching as the soldier quickly bowed.
"Ah, Commander Yon Rha," Iroh said without hesitation. "Thank you for being here early."
Yon Rha peered up, catching Iroh's hand motioning for him to stand. As he did, he watched Iroh pore through some scrolls on the handsome desk in front of him.
"Is... everything alright, General?" Yon Rha asked, doing his best to not panic. Had he done something wrong? Was he being dismissed? Or worse?
"Hmm? Of course; forgive me, we are trying something new today."
Yon Rha blinked as Iroh handed Lu Ten a scroll.
"You see," Iroh continued, beaming at his beloved only child. "Today will be Lu Ten's first day handing out assignments to the regimens. Father and I are here to assess his decisions."
Breathing a sigh of relief, Yon Rha watched the young prince open the scroll he'd been handed. He read it, then closed it back up. He motioned for another, and Iroh reciprocated. Lu Ten read the next scroll, and he looked satisfied.
"Commander," Lu Ten's voice was sharp and clear. "There's news about sightings of a waterbender in the South Pole."
Yon Rha's eyes widened. "It's been years since we've seen a waterbender there."
"Indeed," Lu Ten answered. "But we cannot risk ignoring this. I'm sure you've heard of the one that escaped some time ago, using her waterbending to control the bodies of the guards?"
Yon Rha swallowed, feeling his skin crawl as Lu Ten looked up at him. Despite his young age, the prince was already looking very much like his stern grandfather.
"We cannot risk a power like that getting out of hand. I want you to take your fleet to the South Pole and find the Waterbender."
Nodding, Yon Rha didn't hesitate to accept the scroll as Lu Ten handed it to him. "And... where shall I take the prisoner? Boiling Rock?"
Iroh and Azulon looked to Lu Ten as he squared his shoulders and made his first executive decision.
"There will be no prisoners, Commander."
Ah... an easy job then.
Yon Rha saluted the young prince, bowing as he put the scroll into his belt. As he straightened up, he saw Iroh and Azulon looking upon Lu Ten proudly.
"I will not fail you, Prince Lu Ten."
Lu Ten smiled. "I have seen your records, Yon Rha. I know you won't."
The words weren't so much as affirmative as they were a demand of continued perfection.
Moments later, Yon Rha was exiting the office as Iroh and Azulon regarded the young prince as he looked to them for guidance.
"How was that?" Lu Ten asked. Azulon chuckled with raspy breaths.
"Very well put," The Fire Lord encouraged his grandson's mind.
Iroh patted his son's shoulder eagerly. "I knew you would be a natural at this!"
Looking upon his son proudly, Iroh could never imagine his beautiful son's decisions bringing about any sort of strife.
But six years have passed, and Lu Ten has passed as well, and Iroh has heard Waterbending Master Katara, a friend of his nephew, reveal something about herself that has made Iroh's stomach sick. She touches the beautiful necklace she wears, something he knows to be a Water Tribe tradition after he asks her about it.
"This is all I have of my mother. She died six years ago in an attack by the Southern Raiders. She gave her life to save me."
Serious question: Why does fandom invent convoluted and/or pathological motives for everything Azula does despite her explaining herself very clearly?
For example...
Why does Azula use fear to control people? It must be because she's a walking Dark Triad DSM-V checklist, right?
But what does she herself say when no one else is around?
"What choice do I have?! Trust is for fools! Fear is the only way."
telling a joke on tumblr is fun but watch out! if it gets over 1000 notes your joke is automatically exposed to people who have never once heard a joke in their life.
"why would you say that" because it was funny. "but that isn't true" it's the funniest way to express that sentiment. "why would you do that" because it's a joke.
you guys would never believe what's happening to this post
This is an excellent response
Give me a break I think cardi b is dumb but gosh you guys live in a cult
This just in, user @bottlepiecemuses thinks Americans who (checks notes) "vote" are in a cult.
Nope people who shame others for not voting are a cult . Also her not voting doesn't ruin anyone's lives.
This just in, user bottlepiecemuses thinks marginalized people begging privileged Americans to participate in the political process is being in a "cult". This user also thinks that "not voting" is a neutral choice that can't possibly have negative consequences.
fellas is it a victim complex to be on your knees begging people not to vote for the party that is currently trying to make it so your existence is illegal.
Will,at Nico’s funeral: can i have an moment with him please?
Annabeth: yeah ofc * leaves*
Will, leaning over Nico’s coffin: i know you’re not dead.
Nico: yeah, no.
boy prince has to learn to do the dishes
1. a) sokka crying because he his father is going to war and he cannot join him b) hakoda crying because his son rescued him from being a prisoner of war
2. a) sokka crying because he could not rescue suki from being captured. b) suki crying because sokka came to rescue her
3. a) yue crying because she cannot protect sokka b) sokka crying because he could not protect yue
i find it very interesting that unlike the other prominent characters in the series, we rarely see sokka cry. there are plenty of moments in which crying would be appropriate, and in that same circumstance, aang and katara would shed tears without hesitation. even toph and zuko, who feel the need to conform to an invulnerable ideal and “show no weakness” cry more readily than sokka does, who only cries once in a moment that is neither a flashback (to before the men left the tribe) nor played to comedic effect. it is why that moment in “the day of black sun” when azula is baiting him is all the more impactful.
sokka is someone who refuses to show weakness or rely on others, and it is likely that he has internalized the notion that any display of emotion is a weakness. while he is very expressive, he does not wear his heart on his sleeve like katara does. he cares deeply, and is overtly loyal, but he is also hyper-rational and thinks any display of vulnerability on his part is a fault.
even though toph is more detached and logical than katara and aang, she is also in tune enough with her emotions that she cries freely when she is upset. and though it is clear that ozai held zuko to a very similar standard of masculinity that sokka holds himself to, in which crying is a weakness, zuko still cries quite a bit throughout the show.
after hakoda left when sokka was 13, sokka made it his mission to take responsibility for the tribe, for katara, and for anyone he comes to care about over the course of the show. whenever someone he loves gets hurt, he considers it a personal failure, that he could not protect them. it is his greatest weakness, and azula is able to exploit it by reminding him that he was unable to protect suki. in a way that is usually unlike him, he lets his emotions get the better of him despite knowing full-well that it’s a trap. since he became the quote unquote “man of the tribe” when he was 13, he has successfully remained composed – and thus, not “weak” – but it is the reminder that he failed to protect someone that undoes him.
sokka’s immense guilt over not being able to save suki or his father wracks him, and he willingly – irrationally – puts his life on the line to save them both at the boiling rock. he will do anything he can to save those he loves. though sokka prides himself on his logic, he will always put his loyalty and devotion first, above reason, above rational detachment.
sokka cried exactly three times in atla, each time because he was unable to protect someone he cared about. and they all cried over him too.
