Honeyed milk flowed from his water skin freely over his curls only leaving behind silky pearls that traveled their way down his body to the mud below. He threw the empty leather skin where most of the milk was already resting and stretched his arms open to his sides as if in taunt and mockery. For what sort of a man would leave his beloved to wait for almost thirty summers?”

While this piece works perfectly fine without the very specific visual ‘joke’ its built on here goes: There’s an old belief and custom sourced to at least 17th century (and believed to be way older) in Finland that revolves around snakes being kept as ‘house snakes’ – specifically grass snakes (I’m pretty sure in rare cases adders too, but sadly I don’t have my book touching on this subject anymore). These snakes could live in the yard or in the home and they were believed to protect the household and cattle if kept well – and by feeding them with milk (they got the first sip of fresh milk too). Midsummer spells are still very much an alive custom. Midsummer night is believed to be very potent for magic, and most of the spells recorded are to do with love. One of such spells mentions to look for a snake (I’ve read adder in most cases probably as most other spells are already adjacent to fields). The direction where the snake looks at during midnight is the direction you must go to find your love. (also, the red belt is another spell, where a maiden should go to a field all naked save for red belt to boost luck in love) I wanted to combine these to customs in this piece to reflect a personal, active participation in finding what you most desire. Wreg pours milk over himself to attract snakes, rather than hoping to find one to lead him. He’s tired of waiting for signs and becomes the sign himself.
