it’s a boiled down summation of the film’s clear dichotomy between booker and andy’s increasing nihilism and joe and nicky’s more romanticized view of the world.

andy and booker see themselves as alone in this ceaseless trudge through life, constantly pushing that boulder up the hill, only to feel like all their efforts are pointless. theyve lost almost everyone they ever cared for and in a way they’ve lost their faith. they both would welcome death like an old friend.

for joe and nicky their love for each other makes the idea of eternity not only bearable but joyful. they not only fight to do what they believe is right as though it’s some kind of sacred calling, but they fight for each other, and it has allowed them to retain their faith in humanity.

it’s a testament to the idea of love, love of all kinds, being the most powerful force on earth.
