Cyber security specialist shortages could leave Australia vulnerable to attack, experts say
With cyber threats evolving constantly, a shortage of skilled cyber security workers has experts and government worried about Australia becoming vulnerable to an attack.
Australian Cyber Security Growth Network (ACSGN) CEO Craig Davies said the demand for skills in the sector had outstripped anyone's ability to produce skilled candidates.
"It's such a rocket ship this industry, we have zero unemployment and the demand is massive," he said.
Mr Davies has been tasked with working out how to fill the current cyber specialist shortage.
"Education and growing that skill set is an important part for our program of work, and we're working with the vocational sector heavily," he said.
A recent Government report estimated Australia would need another 11,000 cyber security specialists over the next decade.
The ability to meet that target was possible, Mr Davis said, with the right focus.
While more TAFEs and universities offer specialised courses, there are also calls to make cyber security part of the school curriculum.
Tim Edwards works for Life Journey, an international company specialising in online IT classes for school children.
"If you look at the rise of coding it's become something that's really popular, and that's really great," he said.
"I think that same sort of momentum needs to happen in cyber security.
"It needs to become common knowledge — more broadly discussed at home, at school."
But the cyber security industry also has to help itself in order to attract more people, Mr Edwards said.
"It's been a male-dominated skill for a long time," he said.
"You miss out on half the population who sometimes could be turned away by these misconceptions about what a STEM career is, or what cyber security careers are."
The shortage of cyber security specialists is not just an Australian problem.
ISACA, a non-profit information security advocacy group, predicted that there would be a global shortage of cyber security professionals by 2019.
Aside from data attacks, Mr Edwards said the online world gave people the ability to cause harm.
"Cyber threats could evolve into something that could be more violent, ultimately cause loss of life," he said.
"Right now, I don't think we're seeing that on this scale but I think it's something that could definitely evolve."
Government and private sector 'must work together'
Patrick Walsh, a former commander of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet now employed by an international cybersecurity firm, said online threats were forcing governments to rethink how they protected communities.
"In the past we would have a government approach and we would have a private sector approach," he said.
"Increasingly we need to leverage each other and we need to find ways to work more collaboratively and more transparently so that information is shared."
Mr Walsh said it was an ongoing challenge to remain on top of the evolving threat.
"There's been so many changes in the cyber security environment over a short period of time, it makes me anxious and nervous because there's a real threat of miscalculation," he said.
"When you start to wonder whether or not you can trust data and trust the outcome of an election, that starts to undermine public trust in institutions."
For the last year or so, a security expert & researcher and drone fan named Kevin Finisterre has been taking apart DJI source code and looking for potential vulnerabilities.
Locky, Dridex, and Angler among cybercrime groups to experience fall in activity
Quiet period for several major threat groups may be indirectly related to arrests in Russia.
There has been a sudden drop off in activity relating to a number of major malware families in recent weeks. Dridex (W32.Cridex), Locky (Trojan.Cryptolocker.AF), the Angler exploit kit and Necurs (Backdoor.Necurs), are among the threats who appear affected by this development. Following reports of scaling back in activity by a range of cybercrime gangs, Symantec telemetry has confirmed that some of these groups have virtually ceased operating, while others appear to have greatly scaled back activity.
Locky has been one of the most prevalent ransomware threats in recent months, but Symantec has seen very few new Locky cases, either from spam campaigns or exploit kits since the beginning of June. While the threat has not disappeared, there has been a significant dip in activity, indicating that that there has been some disruption in the actors’ operations or a conscious decision to scale back.

Financial fraud Trojan Dridex, which is known to use the same spam affiliate has Locky, has also shown a notable drop in activity but has not disappeared entirely. The Dridex botnet is segregated into a number of subsidiary botnets, known as subnets. These subnets are identified by three digit numbers, e.g. 120, 220 etc. Some subnets, such as 120, are continuing to operate. In addition to this, Symantec has observed a number of Word macro downloaders (W97M.Downloader) continuing to deliver Dridex through spam campaigns.

The Necurs botnet has also been reported to have suffered an outage in recent days although it has since resumed activity. Necurs has been heavily associated with major spam campaigns and disruption in its activities could provide one possible explanation for the drop on Locky and Dridex activity.
Another threat group to drop off the radar is the Angler exploit kit. Symantec telemetry has not reported any payloads being delivered by Angler since the beginning of June nor has it reported any compromised websites that points to the exploit kit. This is not the first time Symantec has seen Angler become inactive and it remains uncertain whether the well-known exploit kit has disappeared permanently.
Angler’s disappearance has also prompted a falloff in activity in CryptXXX ransomware (Trojan.Cryptolocker.AN). Angler was one of the main delivery channels for CryptXXX.
Angler is not the only exploit kit to recently depart the scene. The well-known Nuclear exploit kit became inactive from the beginning of May. Since this occurred one month earlier, it is unclear if there is any connection with more recent developments.

Connection with arrests
Mystery surrounds the sudden drop off in activity among so many threat groups, but it comes in the immediate aftermath of the arrest of 50 people in Russia accused of involvement in the Lurk banking fraud group.
Given that most of the affected threats have not disappeared entirely, it appears unlikely that they are directly connected to the Lurk group. One possible explanation is that the law enforcement takedown against Lurk could have resulted in the shutdown or seizure of infrastructure used by other attacker groups, who have since been working to resume their operations.
Symantec Security Response is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide further updates if new information comes to light.
