One thing I just never ever see enough is the notion that Grantaire (deep, deep down) did believe in the cause. The whole time. Grantaire was a man who took great care not to believe in anything.

The man was disillusioned and tired and a cynic and he did care. He did believe in the world and people and a better future - maybe not outwardly, maybe not initially because he allowed a nihilist, absurdist, drunken perspective to consume him so he didn’t have to feel the overwhelming hope and fear of caring!

He doesn’t stand up at the end just because of Enjolras. He doesn’t argue and volunteer (albeit he doesn’t actually help) and ask what they are fighting for just because of enjolras. He loves his friends, and he loves his wine, and he loves entering a room to the smell of fresh Brie cheese. He loves. Love is literally the opposite of not caring, of not believing.

I’m so sorry, Grantaire cannot be summed up as just willing to die for Enjolras (but isn’t that most causes - believing in others so much you’re willing to do something drastic to see change?) Grantaire was always going to be willing to die for a cause he did believe in

For me, Grantaire has always been the most relatable of les amis because he struggles to be optimistic. He is able to stick his head in the sand and pretend not to care & let the feelings of hopelessness and inaction win but he still cares (and it seems more relevant to have a character like him in recent years) and he cannot just be the one dimensional simp we all sometimes act like he is.
