There was a guy called oats-ffxiv or something who DMed me about asking me if I wanted to commission art from them (at first they were really awkward asking me if I liked video games, on my blog that has a pinned post about Baldur's Gate 3).

They asked me about making commission for my CHARACTER (emphasis on "character" instead of characters, of which I have five, which I didn’t ask for this guy just cold called my DMs on tumblr) and I said I was “in between jobs and will think about it” and I just wanted to ask and they asked what my budget was.

I said 50, just as a ballpark of what that gets me, and they said "no I want 80" before I could ask what the details were. The account also had no information about their commission process (art looked traced too) and they were like are you gonna pay me half or full now?? And I blocked them lol.

What does your OC's name mean to you?

Thank you for the tag @unovafarm! I love how jam-packed on themes Nienna's name is from the Tolkien homage to the Norse pantheon of her surname. Now for my OCs' names which in comparison seem to be running on pure vibes (buckle up because this is gonna be LONG):

Mina Minos

Fun fact, I did not come up with the last name Minos in Baldur's Gate, but in Wildermyth, which is another fantasy RPG game that has drained out months of my life. I was simply pressing random generate when coming up with my character's name and I rolled Minos as the last name and I went "that goes HARD", and came up with Mia Minos, who in Wildermyth had a daughter named Martha Minos. Martha, in the canon of BG3, is Mina's mom. The name Mina came later from me MISREMEMBERING the name MIA because I originally wanted to do a whole dynasty of Minos for each playthrough but ended up just liking Mina as my first and only Minos I played as simply because the name slaps.

Her full name Wilhelmina Eurydice Minos came much much later because the thought occured to me that Mina as a name might not be period accurate, so I looked up what Mina is short for and turns out Wilhelmina is a perfectly fine noble name, and Eurydice was simply completing the gravitas of Mina's last name Minos as per the king Minos of Greek myth about the Minotaur. While I was playing BG3, I just came up with the entire noble house lore in between commuting from quest to quest.

Meekah Duskfate

I came up with Meekah after completing Mina's run because I wanted to try out this drow thing everyone's talking about. Her name was actually inspired by Wyll because it was Will with a "y" and I thought "I too can misspell people's names" so I came up with Mika because I thought it was really great name for a rogue and just bastardized it into Meekah.

Duskfate as her surname also came after beating the game simply because I wanted to come up with a mutual surname for the drow sisters. Having learned a little more about DnD lore and how half-elves name themselves vs drow, I thought it would be thematic that Meekah and Huska Duskfate would have distinctively half-elf sounding names for two drow to show that they are adopted. At a very young age, even.

For Meekah's birth name Lhylari Baenre, I literally did zero effort on it. Firstly, Lhylari was just from a random drow name generator online and the loosest translation I could get from it was "Llt (iron, west, western)" + "lara (cynic, death, end, victim)" so just nonsense. I learned that lesson after doing Huska though. Secondly, I chose Meekah to be born a Baenre because I only knew House Baenre back then because of Minthara (I did not know who Drizzt Do'Urden was as a complete DnD noob). HOWEVER, DOES MEEKAH NOT HAVE THE BAENRE LIPS?

Helina

Helina was simply named the Dark Urge because it's symbolic, it's funny when she just calls herself the Dark Urge and nobody cares, and I absolutely knew that I could change her name before Act 3 (I didn't). After the whole ordeal of fighting Orin, getting killed, then being revived, Withers said "the sole way to atone for thine actions is to do better, in a new dawn. That dawn is here." And I thought it would be a great thematic gesture for her to christen herself a new name, that being Helina which was again a bastardized (or Wylled) version of Helena, meaning "shining light", tied to helios, the Greek word for the sun. Dawn would have been too cute and too on the nose for her.

Hestia Balfour

Hestia Balfour is quite literally the most vibe based name of the roster (second only to Huska) because I was just lying in my living room couch while thinking up a bard name before I even pressed new game. I wanted to play Bard class after the heaviness of Helina's Durge run and I was just going "I'm (bard name) darling~" trying to think of "what's the most pretentious bard name I could come up with" and Hestia Balfour just rolls out the tongue. It's fancy sounding, it's FAKE sounding, and it's definitely the chosen stage name of Outer City born Ellifain Nimesin who wanted to rub shoulders in the music circles and chose Hestia Balfour.

Huska Duskfate

(SHE ALSO HAS THE BAENRE LIPS)

I was lying on the couch again making random sounds to myself and then I said "Hús", like (hoos like goose) the Old Norse noun that translates to "house", "building," or "household". Then I just said "Huska" a bunch of times and then it became "Hus-ka", Hus like Bus.

That was IT.

Now Huska's birthname Yaseari Baenre on the other hand was just going back to the drow name table and going "Yas/Yaz" (riddle, spinning, thread, web) + "eari/erd" (giver, god, patron). So Yaseari, the most stoic, straightforward, stoic person has the name "riddle god". LOL. LMAO even. Never doing drow name tables again.

Also fun fact, turns out Huska is a real word. As a surname, Huska, (often spelled Húska) is of Slovak, Rusyn, and Ukrainian origin. It derives from the Slovak word húska, which translates to "little goose".

Gothic Heroine Nienna who in my headcanon is now a ghost 👀

I also wrote up a fun little description for this AU version of her under the cut, content notes for murder, torture, smell of blood, mourning, haunting - PLEASE mind the tags, this gets a little dark!

The ghost of Nienna Helaván wanders the halls of her remote mansion in the forests of Rivington, where in life she spent her many years offering care, dignity, and compassion to those who came to her doorstep for respite from their suffering. Abandoned animals, people who could not afford food and housing, and the dying seeking hospice all sought out the warmth of her selfless, empathic care.

One stormy evening, three men appeared at her doorstep claiming one of her residents owed them a significant amount of money, and that if she didn't let them inside, they would kill her if they had to. Nienna, passionately loyal to the dignity and safety of the residents in her care and knowing their harm would not stop with that single resident, refused their threats. She stepped outside with them and closed the door behind her, discretely casting Glyph of Warding on the door so the men would be hit with explosive runes upon touching it, and proceeded to be tortured and murdered by them. Her residents and members of the community fiercely mourned her, knowing that her last act in this realm was one of tremendous self-sacrifice and loyalty to those she swore to protect.

Fifty years later, the mansion, now a bed and breakfast, hosts thousands of visitors per year who hope to avoid the higher prices of lodging in Baldur's Gate. She paces the halls nightly, mourning not the loss of her own life, but the suffering that remains ever prevalent in the world. Many visitors swear they can hear her morose sobs in the hallway, but when they pop their head out of their room to check, there is only darkness and the faint smell of blood lingering in the air.

What's a small BG3 detail that you always notice and love?

I read every piece of paper in the game I can find and store them in a ‘Library’ in the Travellers Chest. Some are heartbreaking, some are hilarious. My favourite are the medical ones such as found in the Blighted Village, bitching about how boring everyone is to the point he just has a giant cask of healing potion, and dispenses as needed… and the House of Healing betting on what’s in the butt. As someone in a similar position… what did that retriever eat?

A while back I tried drawing Taj’s underwear, and I couldn’t. I couldn’t. I still can’t. When I can, I try sketching it so I can draw her in floofy, poofy granny panties. It’s not going how I’d like…

I like this page. It shows how silly and awkward Taj is, fumbling her way around the Nautiloid, stealing anything not nailed down. The hard part, the really hard part is I feel I’ve improved a lot since I started, and I’m trying not to go back and redo things. Keep moving forward.

Comic. It’s not even the first chapter *weeps*. I have no spare time, and the attention span of a spaniel which means I keep getting lured away by fanart for other peoples projects. You’re all so much fun to read about!

🩸What's a fun or silly tradition you have with your OCs/Tavs?

Keys. Taj is a hoarder and a collector… but Taj keeps all the keys in the group forever and my goal through each playthrough is to collect 100 keys as quick as possible. I plan to redo her tent ref with strings and strings of keys. Taj is kinda weird about locked things and so she’s constantly hanging over Astarion’s shoulder as he lock picks. She’s like a cat with a closed door. Nothing has any right to be locked and hidden from her. 

🩸 What's a BG3 NPC you'd love to see in a completely different outfit or setting?

I adore the tieflings, and my fav are the siblings; Rolan, Cal and Lia who have the last name Blackburn in my fanon. I’m obsessed with the Tieflings having their own story arcs and one day I’ll get around to it. 

I use the FADE equipment mod, and there’s a ring that summons a Hyena and my head said… Lia. Lia the Beast Master Ranger and that sent me down a path. Rolan the Blade Singer and Cal (I’m sorry, he doesn’t really have a personality and I’m trying all angles as a swashbuckling rogue, Errol Flynn kinda character.

🩸 What is a BG3 collab project that you would want to do?

MAP. I have never, ever animated before, but have always been in love with Multi-Animator-Projects where we could do an awesome music video with our OCs. 

🩸 What's a tiny headcanon or detail you've added to your Tav/OC that brings you joy?

Taj is so utterly useless at the start of the game. If she were a Pokemon, she’d be a HM Slave. I plan to do it eventually, but I want to do a Shadowheart- Taj meme, akin to Rick & Morty. What is my purpose. You cast ritual’s Taj. Long strider, Feather Fall, Enhanced Leap and Speak with Animals. That is all she is good for… until she gets her lightning powers after Gale’s magic lesson. 

🩸 What is something you want your followers to know about you?

I swear to god, you guys are all awesome… but I stay away from OCs that are too traumatic or, er, spicy. I work in emergency as vet tech so I’m trying to milk every ounce of dopamine I can from happy, silly characters. It's not you, it's me. 

Similarly, I’m an old fart. I remember when the internet was joyous and everyone commented on everything and comments make my heart sing. Please comment on my creative endeavours. Comment on everyone’s creative endeavors! Embrace the Compliment Sandwich!

Answering these questions has been great fun, as it gave me the perfect reason to daydream about The Game some more, and all the things I love about it! 😉

🔹 WHAT’S A SMALL BG3 DETAIL THAT YOU ALWAYS NOTICE AND LOVE?

Oh I see, starting off with a difficult one huh? I don’t know, there is just so much to love! But something I find very endearing are Tav’s idle facial expressions when they’re in the middle of a conversation. It’s like a slightly moving blank slate on which you can project pretty much any emotion(s) of your choice. (And I find that my Elore makes really cute faces when she’s thinking haha)

🔹 WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF REFERENCE MATERIAL YOU’RE CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH?

I don’t currently have one specific piece in mind but let it be known that I am very much into glam/glitter rock aesthetics in general. My mind constantly does crossovers when I listen to this genre, like I’ll hear a song and go “This is SOOO perfect for [insert character]!!” and my mind just wanders off imagining said character in a rockstar outfit. It happens very often. Maybe I should make a prompt game with this? Hmmm…

🔹 SHARE A SNIPPET OR VISUAL FROM YOUR CURRENT PROJECT THAT YOU’RE QUIETLY PROUD OF.

I literally just finished this piece so it isn’t a “project” anymore, but I’ll have to go with the Mineral Moon I painted for it. I’ll even put the reference photo next to it, just so you can comprehend exactly how thrilled I was with how it turned out! I’ve never been very gifted at realism, so that was something I was extremely proud of. In a very loud and obnoxious (not quietly at all) way.

(Unfortunately I do not remember which site I took the reference photo from, but I’ve seen it in many places so I’m not sure what the exact source is. If you happen to know, leave me a comment and I’ll happily give credit to the author.)

🔹 WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO CREATING OR FINISHING SOON?

I was rushing to create the aforementioned art piece featuring Astarion, because I will be attending Montréal Comiccon this weekend and guess who will be a guest? That’s right, Neil Newbon in the flesh will be there, so I really wanted to meet him and have him sign something I created out of love for The Character. This will be the geeky highlight of my year I’m sure, so I’m not exactly certain what will come next…  I do have a few loose ideas for my next artistic project, although I have to let them simmer for a bit. That is a good thing though, because I will be needing some time to yap about Elore some more and make a few posts that will help shape her character/backstory better. My handsome girl 💚

🔹 WHAT’S A FUN OR SILLY TRADITION YOU HAVE WITH YOUR OCs/TAVS?

In character creator, no matter the game, I always pick a couple of features to “exaggerate” in a way that slightly defy modern unrealistic beauty standards. Nothing huge, just enough that they look more real to me. Interestingly enough, they usually end up being my favourite visual aspects about that character’s appearance. I gave my Shepard dark bushy eyebrows and an aquiline nose, my Inquisitor Chloris has thin lips and bit of an underbite, stuff like that.

For Elore, I didn’t have these kinds of options in the BG3 character creator, since you must choose from an array of preset face models… but then I saw the option to make her freaking tall and I was like “YES! That’s perfect, you’re going to occupy so much space it’ll make all the toxic boys mad! Body Type 3 it is!”

And let me tell you I haven’t regretted that decision a single time since. One day I’ll make a post about my boundless appreciation for tall woman Tav…

🔹 WHAT’S A BG3 NPC YOU’D LOVE TO SEE IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OUTFIT OR SETTING?

Oh geez I don’t know… Considering what I just said before, you know who would look good in a glitter rock outfit? My man Dammon. But not like FULL ON glam rockstar, more like with folky vibes. OR he would also make a very cute roadie for a rock band. I am SURE of it!! Also you know what? Isobel would make a fine Debbie Harry… there’s lots of potential there! (Oh damn looks like I’m spiraling again… somebody stop me!)

🔹 WHAT IS A BG3 COLLAB PROJECT THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO DO?

I wish I had more time to do everything I wish to do, and I’ve only ever made one collab project where I created an illustration as well as page and chapter breakers for a fanfic, as part of a Dragon Age fan event before (you can see it here if you’re curious).

Honestly though, I’d be honoured to work on anything with fun, creative people (especially if it would feature our OCs interacting)! I’m clearly not a writer, but I can draw alright, so I’d be open to work on many things such as :

- Short comic that could be illustrated in a few panels, if someone were to think of a short conversation or scene;

- Custom dividers and PNG art to match your OC’s or fanfiction vibe (as long as credit is given);

- An illustration of our OCs together;

- An art swap where I draw your OC and you draw mine, or I draw your OC and you write something for mine;

As long as the person is interested in collaborating (as opposed to making one-sided demands), I’d be happy to hear about anything you have in mind! 💙

🔹 WHAT’S A TINY HEADCANON OR DETAIL YOU’VE ADDED TO YOUR TAV/OC THAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

Elore is an absolute kid a heart, she loves interacting with children! She had a very happy childhood growing up in her homeforest of Wealdath. Thanks to her size and relaxed demeanor, she was pretty popular within her kids group, and that’s why she’s so playful with them as an adult (she just can’t resist teasing the little tieflings whenever the opportunity arises!).

This explains why she loves hanging out with her gang of weirdos during the events of BG3 so much, as she hasn’t been part of a group for so long despite loving it. These moments spent playing with the other wood elf children are some of the most joyful life memories she has, and just another beautiful thing from her past that she denied herself from having when she started her new life in Baldur’s Gate. 🥺

i'd like everyone to meet Delilah

this my beloved halfling paladin that was my first tav for Baldur's Gate 3. she has sworn an Oath of Devotion to Ilmater after decades of following Loviatar. she's not the conventional monster killing paladin. she slays figurative monsters no matter what they are.

her oath to Ilmater drives her to alleviate the suffering of others and she will go to great lengths to ensure that; even death is a viable option. additonally, she hold herself to a higher standard of perfection and rightousness than she does others. Delilah believes that she should never make a mistake.

during the course of my game she romanced Astarion and truthfully i'm still capivated by that idea narratively.

Hey hey! Thank you @brokenhardies for giving me my first ever ask! With my own ask list no less (at least I'm assuming)! You can find it here if anyone wants to dabble in it themselves!

5. Does your OC have a sweet tooth?

Absolutely! Mina Minos is a known aficionado of afternoon tea, especially chantilly cream and scones, her favorite foods. Mina is known to have sugar cravings constantly, as someone who had to survive five years adventuring during her Barbaric Rites where sugar and spice are luxuries among the regular men. Now that she's home, she's raiding the House Minos treasury just to spend it on cream puffs to shove into her mouth.

8. What does your OC bring to the potluck?

Blackberry Crumble. Why? It's easier than a pie. It's sweet. It uses foraging. And it's done in a cast iron dutch over over a fire. Perfect for someone who had five years in the wild to perfect one recipe that can deliver sugar into her digestive system. Mina has frighteningly precise, almost ritualistic command over exactly one dessert, and it's the best damn crumble you've ever had, and she will not explain her process because she doesn't fully know how to either.

10. Is your OC good at cooking? How did they learn?

Mina is pretty good at making camp food. Mostly through five years of trial and error and a childhood of learning how to prepare camp food from the House before they kicked her out for the Barbaric Rites. Basically home economics but for the wilderness. Mina can cook anything you can stick into a stew. Potatoes, carrots, beans, oats, whatever. Porridge? Soup? A whole brisket of braised venison? She got it down. She did five years in the can. The can being the Sword Coast.
