Moved
Hey guys, long time no see. I've moved to @greentq0699 now, so feel free to check it out if you want. It's definitely a more fandom-based account and I will start writing fanfics on there at some point maybe so keep that in mind. May come back here as a more personal one sometimes. Thanks and love you guys I promise ā¤ļø
i was sitting on my couch, in tears, and my dad, an Old Liberal, sits down next to me and he says
āi know i canāt say anything that will make any of this better, but i want you to know that, in 1980, when i was 18 years old, i watched the country elect ronald reagan, and i was just as devastated as you are now. it felt like everyone had gone insane. my friends and i joked about moving to canada or japan or england, just like you are with your friends. i was angry then, and iām still a little bitter now, but I got through it. we all did. donald trump is not ronald reagan, i know, but if i can get through it, so can you.ā
anyway that soothed my hurt a miniscule amount, hope it soothes you a bit
Is it just me, or is the Gallerian Marlon of America winning the presidential election?
If you are scared and freaking out...
Remember. Trump has failed at literally everything he has set out to do. If his past track record is any example, he will make big promises, and they will turn into so much shit. He will be fighting two parties the whole way, because he has made so many enemies just in the campaign.Ā
Just watch the Trump presidency become as big a joke as most things with Trump plastered on them. Trump steaks, Trump University, Go-Trump.com, Trump airlines, Trump Vodka, Trump Mortgage, Trump magazine, Trump the board game, Trump Ice, Tour de Trump, A bunch of the Trump resorts, Trump TV, Trumped radio, Trump new media, the list is endless.
Letās stick together for four years while the people who put faith in this cheeto dusted hairy yam realize that they have put a con artist in office who has a history of making big promises and delivering exactly zero percent of them. Ā Hopefully both sides will be so upset, that he will get nothing done, and people will be so mad at republicans next election we can have a better shot at **cough BERNIE cough** someone who will actually try to make this country great for the first time, without reverting to when it was built on the suffering of anyone who was different and was only great for specific races and religions.
can you please talk about those protections to curtail executive power I'm really, really scared and could use the reassurance thank you
THINGS A PRESIDENT CANNOT DO:
Reverse any Supreme Court decisionĀ
This includes Obergefell v. Hodges, which made same-sex marriage a constitutional right; Whole Womanās Health v. Hellerstedt, which reaffirmed a womanās right to choose first articulated in Roe v. Wade, another Supreme Court case. Grutter v. Bollinger, which instituted affirmative action, the entire body of Civil Rights case law, plus anything related to due process, including the right of minors to due process, your right to an attorney, Miranda rights, inadmissible evidence, etc.
(Even if Trump appoints the worst possible SC nominee, they still canāt reverse any of these decisions without a really significant case coming before the Court with new facts, and then they have to write an opinion stating how this case is different than that other caseā¦itās unlikely to happen.)
Write law or repeal any existing law
While traditionally, presidents have exerted influence on the legislative agenda (see, Obamaās role in advancing and promoting the Affordable Care Act) they cannot actually write or pass legislation. Bills, joint resolutions, concurrent resolutions, and simple resolutions must be introduced in the House by a Representative.
Presidents cannot strike down law. Only Congress can repeal laws, and only the Supreme Court can strike them down as unconstitutional.
Presidential influence is just thatāinfluence.
(And ifāfor exampleāyou are hated by 95% of the party you joined last week, and burned all your goddamn bridges by insulting them at various points in your campaignā¦..theyāre unlikely to partner with you in crafting legislation.)
Make any law or declaration that infringes in any way on the rights of the states
So in the US, most of the rights are reserved to the states. You name it, itās a state-run power. Criminal procedure and law? States.Ā Medicare and Medicaid? States.Ā The definition of marriage? States. Insurance, health departments, housing, unemployment benefits, public education, all these are state programs. And the president cannot infringe on those powers given to the states.
(This is why down-ticket voting is so important, because Mike Pence as governor of Indiana had 800x the power heās going to have as VP.)
Declare war.
This one is the most complicated, because with the advent of our āconflictsā in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc. there has been a significant shift in the articulation of the war doctrine, and it is one of the least restricted of the presidentās ārestrictedā powers. But, despite all that, a president still has no power to declare war.
Unilaterally appoint heads of administrative departments
Unilaterally make treaties with foreign nations
Essentially, while presidents have a lot of power, itās mostly unofficialāthey canāt make sweeping laws, they canāt overturn existing rights, the most they can do is refuse to enforce them (which is absolutely a threat! and a problem!) but we arenāt electing de facto royalty here.
Wise words from a wise man
aren't you like, not american?
when you realise america has itās fingers in every countryās business, come back and talk to me
If anyone wonders why Iām so upset that trump is winning Iāll explain it to you.
Iām upset for the hispanics whose families could be deported.
Iām upset for the muslims who could be blocked from entering the us or segregated like Jews were during the holocaust.
Iām upset for the LGBT+ community whose marriages could be voided, and whose young people might have to endure conversion therapy.
Iām upset for the women who could possibly be legally fired/turned down for a job, and who will have to deal with the sexism that the leader, the FACE, of our country obviously has.
Iām upset for anyone who isnāt a straight, white, male. They might have to deal with a president who could easily ruin their entire lives.
hey ted cruz now is time to use those zodiac killer skills youāve been hiding all this time
who else has completely detached from reality and is sitting in numbness and white noise
i canāt fucking believe yall hate women and minorities and immigrants this fucking muchĀ
iād like to say personally to the two million plus people who voted third party fuck you
message to my women, Muslim, PoC, LGBT, and disabled followers:
I love you all. Your lives are valuable. There are still a lot of people out in the world who love you.Ā
Please, please, please, stay strong. Now is the time to fight back and show that we wonāt be erased.
And please tell those around you who need it that they are loved.
Some reassurance for you all
-Trump cannot do most of what he promised, even with a republican senate and house.
-He still has a rape case coming up and may still serve jail time.
-Trump ran as a democrat in 2012 and has tried to become president for way longer than you think. The only reason he went to republican is because he realized it would be easier.
-He is a joke and just wanted to become president as an ego boost. Heās not actually interested in making any real changes.
-His supporters will start to abandon him when they realize he canāt fulfill their desires.
-itās just going to be 4 years. Besides, weāve had bad presidents before and survived.
-We can always impeach him.
ā
I know that it may be dangerous for a lot of people the next few days but trust me, itās not the end of the world.
We will protest. We will impeach. We will fight. Weāre not gonna let an attention hungry dried up orange ruin our lives.
Stay safe and stay positive. There is always hope and I hope this has helped you.
Welcome to the United States of Anxiety.Ā
