Makoto:

Subaru:

Isn’t it more fun to get out and move around than to sit around stuck at a desk?  Transfer Student, you think so too, right?

Hm?  Transfer Student, you’re looking sorta gloomy.  What’s up?  Something on your mind~?

Hmm.  Sagami-chan chewed you out ‘cause you did poorly on your physical fitness test, huh?

Still, Sagami-chan’s pretty half-assed about everything, so you probably don’t have to worry too much about it.

Hokuto:

While Sagami-sensei’s work ethics aren’t exactly admirable......

He is the sports doctor in charge of maintaining the students’ physical condition.  I don’t think he’d slack at least so far as his students’ health is concerned.

Ugh, you’re so loud.  Would you all just shut up?  It’s hurting my ears just listening to you babble on while walking......

Makoto:

Eeeeep, Izumi-san!?  W-wh-w-w-wh-why are you’re here?

((The word Shinobu uses here and at the end of the chapter isn’t for just any old angel, he’s actually calling her an archangel!  It’s sorta like he’s calling her a ‘super angel’ or ‘an angel among angels,’ but the word “archangel” feels a little more specific in English? So I went with just “angel” for the TL.))

An- anyways, with a powerful ally like you by my side, I feel like I can’t lose de gozaru!

((Note: In Japan, it’s customary at high schools to change from your outdoor shoes into another pair of shoes meant to be worn inside when you enter the school building.  You write your name on them so they won’t get mixed up with other people’s shoes, kinda like how you write your name on PE uniforms.  For the record, Hokuto writes Anzu’s name on her shoes for her in chapter four of Hierarchy, so you can check the cg here if you’re curious what they look like.))

Whoaaa.  Anzu-chan told me it was an underground live house, but…

This place is huge.  I’m gettin’ excited already......♪ 

Shu:

You’re lookin’ pretty cheery too, Oshi-san.  I guess it’s cause we ran inta Nazuna-nii, huh?

Shu:

It most certainly is not.  This may be the first time I’ve spoken with Nito face-to-face in a while, but I’ve been watching over him, careful not to let him notice me.

Seeing him smiling, having fun, clapping his hands...... There have been times I came dangerously close to revealing myself.  Honestly, what an ungrateful doll.

He almost never smiled like that for me.

If only I could have seen Nito smile, I might still have been leading Valkyrie to brilliant new heights even now.

Although, there is little point to such “what if” fantasies.  Valkyrie was defeated, and Nito has left us.

All Valkyrie has left is a poorly made failure of a doll and the scraps of someone who’s lost their ability to perform satisfactorily.

I imagine it is only a matter of time until we have to accept that we’ve been banished to history’s deepest reaches.

If we continue as we are, it won’t be long before Valkyrie vanishes from Yumenosaki Academy like foam swallowed by the sea.

I’ve changed my mind about the live, though.  This is Nito we’re talking about.  He probably really will bring all of the Ra*bits members to see our performance.

To be honest, I wanted to avoid getting on stage before recovering to full strength, seeing as I currently am not so much as half of what I was in peak condition.

However, be as it may that we’re only were to inspect the venue, I did come all the way out to the live house.

I had thought it would be fine to leave everything to you because the live isn’t a competition, but we can’t disgrace ourselves in front of Nito.

I’m not going to tell him to learn only from the pretty, pure things there are to see in the world, though.  A traitor is merely a traitor, after all.

No matter how beautiful Nito’s smile may be, I can’t unconditionally enjoy it.

Mika:

Shu:

What are you laughing about? You were just pulling a face like you were about to die a moment ago.  You change your attitude too quickly.

Mika:

Hmph.  You’ll smile brightly enough to make flowers bloom for something as trivial as that?

No matter what extravagant clothes I made to lavish on you, not a single one of my presents ever managed to get a smile out of you.

Knowing you don’t sell out your smiles cheaply just makes it that much more aggravating.  Your smiling face ought to be preserved in a museum.

It isn’t something to go about careless flashing to the vulgar masses.  I simply cannot allow it! 

Nazuna:

Sorry, Itsuki.  My smile doesn’t belong to just you anymore.

You aren’t interested in seeing me fake a smile anyways, right?

......Ra*bits is where I belong.  No matter what you say, I’m going to stay with those kids, hand in hand. 

Mitsuru:

Nii~chan......

I won’t let go of Nii~chan’s hand either.  If you ever look like you’re about to leave and go somewhere far away, I’ll squeeze your hand even tighter and pull you back.

Even if I’m not strong enough alone, there’s Tomo-chan and Hajime-chan too.  Three hands are better than one~

.......Valkyrie.  This is just me asking, so you don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I want you to come see our live.

Of course, I won’t force you to, so just come if you feel like it.  I don’t mind even if you just keep us in the back of your mind.

Shu:

If you’re preparing for your own live, that’s all the more reason not to bother coming to Valkyrie’s live.  You can’t possibly have that much time to spare, or have you forgotten how miserably you lost to us before?

Nazuna:

I remember.  There’s no way I could forget.

Ra*bits had only just been formed, so even though there were four of us, we still lost to the two of you alone.

Our abilities are sorely lacking, and if we don’t work even harder, we won’t be good enough to so much as compare to Valkyrie.

That’s exactly why we need to see lots of units’ lives to study, though.  Well, Valkyrie and Ra*bits’ styles are pretty different, but still.

There are still plenty of aspects of your singing and dancing that we can learn from.  We can absorb all those aspects, get a good understanding of them, and then perfect our own singing and dancing.

Shu:

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.  You publicly disgraced yourselves when you challenged me and lost, even though I am far from being in prime condition myself.  I’m impressed you still had the willpower to get back up and keep going.

Nazuna:

Yeah, but we can’t let one loss stop us~  They’re still kids, so it was a big shock for the others when you beat them to a pulp, but...

They got right back up and were enthusiastic about trying harder next time~  I was worn out and I’m not sure I could’ve done it myself.  Kids sure are full of energy.

Actually, no.  They’re all strong kids, so they use all their frustration as the fuel they need to keep chugging along.  Somewhere along the line, I guess they came and gave me a push on the back.

Shu:

......You look so happy telling me all this that I cannot help but assume you’re trying to insinuate something, you spiteful thing.

Kagehira, we’re leaving.  I’ve nothing more to say to Nito.

Mika:

Ah, okay.  Um...... Nazuna-nii, you keep doin’ your best too, okay?

I can hardly imagine a comedy as ridiculous as your struggle to present yourself as a human being!

Nazuna:

Yeah...... I guess I’m still clumsy and awkward, but I’m still standing on my own legs, moving of my own free will.

I’m not an obedient marionette anymore.

Shu:

Hmph, you’re only distancing yourself from me and pretending to be human.  You’re still dancing in the palm of my hand, even now, Nito.

Yep.  Oh, but we aren’t doin’ the live right now.  We’re goin’ ta go scope the place out~  Anzu-chan’s meetin’ us at the live house.

Still, there’re a whole lotta people here, huh?  Oshi-san doesn’t look like he’s doin’ all so good, and I’m not real great with crowds either~

They make me feel like I’m gonna bump inta someone, and then I’d hafta look up and apologize ta them, but if our eyes met, it’d be a real mess.

If we did a live, I guess there’d be even more people lookin’ at me, though...... I’ve gotta get used ta it~ Otherwise, I’ll just keep addin’ ta Oshi-san’s problems.

Shu:

So you’re at least aware of the problems you cause me.

Speaking of which, I don’t recall giving you permission to babble on about our affairs...... Honestly, you’re giving me a headache.  I assume you spoke like this with that little girl the other day.

Thanks to that, now I have to go inspect the live house even though I am in absolutely no condition to perform on stage.

Well, we’re not checking out the performance area today, but Mitsuru-chin and I came out to buy stuffed animals to toss during the live.

I would never have expected to run into Valkyrie here, so I was pretty surprised when I saw you.  Oshi-sa-...... Itsuki, you hate crowed places, after all.

I’m glad I got to see you both, though.  I’m glad...... that we could talk again.

It’s bad enough that ya can’t talk?  Let’s find a shop ta sit down and take a breather in.

With this crowd, we might hafta wait a bit, but it beats walkin’ around like this, right?

Shu:

You don’t need to worry about me.  I was merely feeling a little dizzy, but it is of no concern.

Mika:

Huh?  Ya felt dizzy? Ya sure you’re okay?  How ‘bout a candy?  When ya aren’t feelin’ well, you’ve gotta eat sweets ta recover your energy.

Shu:

I figured I had ta decide everything quickly, so I rushed and did it myself.

Wo~w, there’s a ton of people here!  There are people on the left!  People on the right! People everywhere!

I bet I’d crash into someone if I dashed around here~...... But I’m not good at holding still, so dash, dash~✫ 

Nazuna:

Mitsuru-chin, why don’t we hold hands before you go getting yourself lost?

If I lost you in such a busy area, I’d probably have to go store to store trying to find you.

.....How’s that?  It’s not hard to walk, is it?

Mitsuru:

No~ problem!  We feel like super close siblings walking around holding hands like this.

It’s too bad Hajime-chan and Tomo-chan aren’t here.  All four of us could have had fun being brothers together~......

Nazuna:

Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin both said they have plans today, so there’s nothing we can do about it.

I would’ve liked to have the two of them here too, but we can’t force them to tag along if they’re busy.

Hm~...... I guess we could have come another day instead.

Seeing as we need to pick up the pace as it is, though, it wouldn’t be good to procrastinate, right?

Well, it’s not like we’re practicing.  We just came to get some stuffed animals to toss to the audience during the live, so I guess it’s fine.

Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin are both counting on us, so we’ve got to work really hard to find some stuffed animals the audience members will like~♪

Mitsuru:

Oh!  Nii~chan, how about that store?  There’s a super huge stuffed animal out front.  I’m gonna go give it a hug~✫

Nazuna:

Hey, Mitsuru-chin, stop that.  You can’t go jumping all over it without the store’s permission, okay?

Mitsuru:

Uuu, I’m sorry.  I’ll put it back where it was..... There, perfect ✫

Nazuna:

It seems like there are a bunch of stuffed animals in the store, but they all look too big to toss to the audience from the stage.

That said, I don’t really think it’d be much better to get small stuffed animals that don’t match Ra*bits’ style just because they’re easier to throw.

Mitsuru:

I know a store that might be better, then.

Nee~chan goes there all the time.  She said there’s a ton of cute stuffed animals there!

Nazuna:

Oh, sounds good.  There are times you just have to look for stuff online, but there are also times where it’s better to buy stuff after looking around in person.

If it’s a store girls would frequent, I’ll bet they’ll have stuffed animals that’ll suit Ra*bits~♪

......Honestly, it’d be nice if I could go to stores like that on my own.

It takes guts to be the only guy in a place full of girls~

Mitsuru:

You don’t look like you’d be that out of place, Nii~chan.  If anything, you’d probably blend right in.

Nazuna:

Um~ Well.  If anything, going somewhere like that with a guy might be..... One time, I ran into another student from Yumenosaki and when we went in together, we got mistaken for a couple.

I was wearing pants, and it’s not like my clothes were girly either.  I wonder why.

Well, I doubt anyone would mistake Mitsuru-chin and I for a couple just because we’re walking around together.

Mitsuru:

Hm~...... I just heard someone say, “Mommy, why’s that lady wearing boy’s clothes?”

Nazuna:

So people will mistake me for a girl even when I’m wearing my uniform......

Mitsuru:

Cheer up, Nii~chan!  Check it out, I’ve got a mini robot model.  It’s super awesome, look~✫

Nazuna:

Ahaha, thanks, Mitsuru-chin.  I feel better now~♪

Mitsuru-chin, do you always carry around that robot figure in your pocket?

Mitsuru:

Yup.  I got him as a birthday present when I was little.  I’ve been carrying him around with me ever since, so most of his paint’s peeled off.

People’ve asked me if I wanted a new toy, but this one’s my favorite, so I can’t get rid of him.

He’ll always be number one to me.  Do you have a toy like that too, Nii~chan?

Nazuna:

......Yeah.  I guess to other people it would just look old and beat up, but I’ve got a lot of great memories with it.

It means more to me than the world, so I could never get rid of it.  I really know how you feel, Mitsuru-chin.

I bet Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin have toys like that too, don’t you think?

Mitsuru:

Nazuna:

Mitsuru-chin?  You’re staring so intently at the crowd.  Did you see someone you know?  We’ve still got plenty of time, so do you wanna go say hi?

Mitsuru:

Umm...... I saw someone who looked a lot like Tomo-chan, so I thought it was maybe him, but he only looked like Tomo-chan from behind.

His face was totally different.

Nazuna:

Oh, that happens to me all the time too.  There have been times I called out to someone from behind, only to realize it wasn’t the person I thought it was.  That’s always embarrassing.

I guess you really have to look at people~ 

Shu:

Nazuna:

Huh......?

(Just now...... Was that Itsuki?  No, I might just be seeing things.  I mean, we were just talking about how strangers can look like people you know from behind.)

Toy Box ✪ Chapter Five

“ ......What!?  They’re gone! There aren’t any croissants! There aren’t any croissants anywhere......!”

......Scram.  It’s rather inconvenient having you idling around in my way, you bothersome little girl.

Hmph.  If you hadn’t been lollygagging around, I would never have had to go out of my way to speak with a cretin like you.  Honestly, what an unpleasant ordeal.

((The yellow and red sign Shu is looking at says, “SOLD OUT”))

......What!?  They’re gone!  There aren’t any croissants!  There aren’t any croissants anywhere......!

This cannot be!  It was written in the student handbook that they have freshly baked croissants this time of day, and I, of all people, would never mistake the time!

......Have they sold out already?  I’ve heard that trying to get bread from the school store at lunch is all but a competition.

Well, it seems as though the lowly masses all flock to the popular breads.

I’m not particularly fond of crowded places, so I usually come to the school store at times there won’t be many people, although I do occasionally make exceptions.

Hmph, not that there’s any need to explain any of this to you, young lady.  If anything, you should be able to understand this much if you just used your head.

It seems as though you at least have a few brain cells up there.

Whether or not someone like you understands my tastes is of little concern to me, but I am rather partial to croissants.

I’m not particularly fond of eating, but croissants are an exception.

Troublesome as it is, humans cannot live off of water alone, so I’ve no choice but to consume foodstuffs.

......Although, of course I cannot live solely on croissants either.  Even favorite foods come to feel commonplace when eaten too often.

In any case, croissants are an important source of nutrients for me, yet someone has gone and plundered them all.

Aargh, how vexing!  I feel as though my blood might just boil out of my skin......!

......What is this you’re holding out to me?  If my eyes do not mistake me, that looks like a croissant.

Hm, hm.......So that’s what happened.  You took the last one.  If I had been in a more collected state of mind, surely I would not have overlooked that.

I suppose paying a lowly wretch like you such little heed came back to bite me.  To think you would sneak in and snatch up my prey right from under my nose, I feel as though I’m about to come apart at the seams!

Yet even worse is that you dared take pity on me.

I will not deny that I am quite fond of croissants, but I have not fallen so low as to consume food another has already touched.

Perhaps you were of the mind that your actions were virtuous, but you should be aware that such ‘good intentions’ are not always welcome.  They may even do more harm than good, as in my case.

......Speaking of which, it would seem as though you’ve been putting ideas in Kagehira’s head, haven’t you?

I am...... Valkyrie is broken nigh beyond repair.

It will take time to fix.  Valkyrie is in no position to take on a live at such short notice.

Even so, Kagehira has been making an absolute racket asking me if I’ll participate.

That skull of his is completely empty, so he fessed up as to where he’d got the idea from rather easily.

While I understand that he was not doing so in an attempt to curry favor with you, the fact that he told an enemy like you of all people about Valkyrie’s internal affairs is problematic.

Well, it seems as though he’s reflected on his actions, and I am not so narrow-minded as to scold him for it, seeing as he was only doing what he thought best for Valkyrie.

At any rate, Kagehira has been pestering me day in and day out about wanting to do a live.  It goes without saying that I am beginning to lose my patience.

This isn’t the first time he’s gone and signed up for lives on his own, you know.

Each time, I would always say I was in no condition to perform.  He always told me he’d wait until I was ready and never tried to force me to join him.

However, it seems as though he has no intentions to yield this time...... Well, I do understand his reasoning.

We don’t have to pay to use the live house, and Valkyrie gets to decide what to perform.

The offer is almost unbelievably good, so I’m sure he must be thinking something along the lines of, ‘we can’t miss this opportunity.’

Regardless, it’s still a solo live for Valkyrie.  It’s not a competition, so it is of little consequence whether the live is a success or not.  If he wants to do it so badly, Kagehira can go perform by himself.

Of course, if it was a competition, that would be a different story.

Anyhow, I told Kagehira I won’t perform.  It would seem as though he’s been secretly preparing for the live anyways, though.

He doesn’t appear to have the slightest idea that I know about it.  What with his disposition, Kagehira isn’t exactly suited for secretive work.  I’m sure anyone would notice.

Honestly, just how much does he intend to meddle in my affairs?  He’s so fixated on it, but there’s no need for him to keep sinking with me in this pit of quicksand we call Valkyrie.

Even without me to tune him, he should have the skills to move on to a new world of his own.

That’s enough idle chatter out of me, though.  You listened so faithfully that I ended up saying things I shouldn’t have.

I guess you’re a good listener.  I usually hate talking to people, so this might be the longest I’ve talked to someone in a while.

......Mademoiselle? It’s the lunch break right now.  Think for yourself about what would happen if I brought her to the school store at a time like this when it gets crowed.

Unlike a certain girl I can think of, Mademoiselle is a delicate lady.  She could be damaged if someone bumped into her.

You can go around crashing into people and tripping for all I care.

Still, you seem quite fond of Mademoiselle.

Of course, it’s only natural to be taken in by her charming looks.  Well, it seems like Mademoiselle is rather fond of you as well.

We don’t have anything else to talk about, right?  Hurry up and go pay.  The person behind the counter has been glancing over here for a while.

......How many times must I repeat myself?  I have not fallen so low as to eat food someone else has touched.  Besides, I lost my appetite.

I think I’ll go shut myself away in the handicraft club room until lunch ends.  The appetite to create satisfies the appetite to eat, or at least it feels like it does.

I’ll eat something, so stop worrying.  I’ve had my fill of collapsing and being carried off to the nurse’s office for low-blood-sugar.  I’ve learned my lesson.

......I caused a lot of trouble for Kiryu doing that in the past, after all.  I don’t want him to start nagging me again.

You should hurry on back to your classroom as well.  Now that you have your croissant, it would be an insult to the baker if you ran out of time to eat it.

You have to savor it.  That’s the most you can do to show your gratitude to the person who made it.

(Still, I wonder if I can sing from my diaphragm a little more.  Seeing as I borrowed the soundproof lesson room, I want to do everything I can.)

First, I have to stand up straight and make sure my feet are placed just a little bit wider than my hips.  Then I have to line my palms up with the pit of my stomach~

Mitsuru:

Nah, it’s fine, I don’t mind, ehe ✫ Anyways, what were you doing, Nii~chan?

Nazuna:

I was doing voice training, not saying hello to you.

I got here earlier than our meet-up time, so I figured I’d practice on my own until you guys came.

Come to think of it, where are Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin?

I thought they were with you, but it looks like you’re the only one here, Mitsuru-chin...... They said they didn’t have club meetings today, so I wonder if something else came up~

Mitsuru:

Uhm, I have a message from Hajime-chan.  He said that his part-time job looks like it’ll run long, so he might be late to practice.

That “Masked Pervert” guy went to Tomo-chan’s class to pick him up, so he’s in the middle of running away from him.

Tag is so much fun~♪

But when I asked Tomo-chan if I could play tag with them, he got really mad and yelled, “This isn’t a game!” at me......

Nazuna:

Ahaha, Wataru-chin seems like he really loves Tomo-chin, after all~

So that’s how it is, huh?  Seeing as I managed to borrow the soundproof practice room, I wanted to practice with everyone, but this throws a monkey wrench in my plans.

I have good news, so I didn’t want to have to put off telling you guys, but...

Mitsuru:

Good news?  What, what?  Nii~chan, I wanna know, what is it......!?

Nazuna:

Whoa.  Hah~...... Don’t suddenly pounce on me like that.  I almost lost my balance and fell over~

Mitsuru-chin, you should really try to be calmer.

Mitsuru:

Uuu, I’m sorry.  Nii~chan, are you okay?

Nazuna:

Yep, I’m fine.  I’m sorry I snapped at you.

Mitsuru:

Nah, you’re right, Nii~chan.  I’ll do my best to be calmer.  Dash, dash~✫

Nazuna:

C’mon, you can’t start running around right as you’re saying you’ll calm down.  Honestly, I can’t take my eyes off you for a second, Mitsuru-chin.  As your Nii~chan, I’ll have to keep looking after you ♪

Mmn~...... I guess I’ll tell you first, Mitsuru-chin.  We had the Sakura Festival a little while back, right?

We took the opportunity to advertise Ra*bits on the side while promoting Trickstar, so we formed an impromptu marching band~

Well, it looks like it paid off.  We got a request from someone who wants Ra*bits to perform a live~♪

Mitsuru:

Eh!? That’s awesome, it’s like we’re real idols~♪

Nazuna:

We aren’t “like” real idols, we are real idols, Mitsuru-chin.

Although, I was surprised at first too.  I asked my teacher over and over again whether he was sure they really said they wanted Ra*bits.

I want to tell Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin as soon as possible~ They’ll be jumping around out of excitement when they hear, I just know it.

Mitsuru:

Ahaha, you’re making them sound like rabbits, Nii~chan.  I’ll jump up and down too, boing, boing ♪

Nazuna:

Okay, okay.  You’re really agile, Mitsuru-chin~  You can handle hard dances like they’re nothing, so you’ve got a promising future ahead of you for sure.

Mitsuru:

Ehe, Nii~chan praised me ✫

Even though I’m good at dancing, I’m really bad at remembering lyrics.  I wish you’d write the pronunciation in for hard kanji~......

Nazuna:

Hmm, I did put the reading in for any kanji I thought you wouldn’t be able to read though~

Do you have any other requests?  ......Actually, hang on.  Let me make a memo of the kanji one first~♪

Mitsuru:

Nii~chan, your notes are completely covered in words.  You’re gonna hurt your eyes trying to read that.

Nazuna:

Oh, yeah.  I guess it’s because I’m always writing memos so I won’t forget things.

I always rewrite them so they’re easier to read when I get home, so the stuff on here is just quick little reminders I scribbled down.

Mitsuru:

My notes are completely blank.  The track club has practice in the mornings, so I have to get up early.

When I finally get to class, I crash and spend the whole lesson off in dreamland~♪

Nazuna:

Hey, Mitsuru-chin.  You have to pay attention in class, okay~?  The classes in high school are harder than the ones you took in middle school.

Just ‘cause Yumenosaki specializes in raising idols doesn’t mean you can slack off in your regular studies.

Even if you end up moving on to the entertainment industry as an idol, you’ll have a hard time if you don’t have a good general education.

Mitsuru:

Uuu, I’m not good at studying, though.  I’m not good at sitting still in a chair either.  Before I notice, I end up running around.

Nyooooom ✫

Nazuna:

It’s fine if you run around here ‘cause you won’t bother anyone, but if you make a fuss in the classroom, you’ll get in trouble~

Mitsuru:

That’s why I try to exhaust all my energy during the morning practice sessions.  Otherwise, I have too much energy and end up making a racket during class.

Nazuna:

Hmm, so you’re less of a bother if you sleep than if you run amok......?  Still, you won’t be able to keep up with your classes, which is a big problem.

Mitsuru:

Nii~chan, you don’t need to worry~!  I get Hajime-chan to teach me everything we learned afterwards.

Hajime-chan’s explanations are always really easy to understand, so even I can remember them ♪

Nazuna:

Really?  I can’t say I approve of you sleeping in class, but if you’re keeping up...... Hm?

Ahaha, speak of the devil  Looks like Hajime-chin and Tomo-chin are here, so let’s hurry and tell them the good news~
