Tags are up to date for the work as a whole so you know what you're getting into. I plan to write an epilogue, which will be chapter 13, but we'll see when that happens :)
Leon starts in his main outfit, but for the majority of this work, he's in the romantic costume from RE4R with his normal hair. Kingdom is inspired by castles in Ireland (RE4 castle works fine as a basis, minus the country/nature surrounding it). The king will come into play, don’t imagine him as your dad unless you despise that man lol. Reader is… mentally unwell given the circumstances lol, but I left the physical descriptions very vague & hopefully very inclusive to all races/ethnicities/hair textures/etc.
Please excuse any grammar mistakes/plot holes/inconsistencies. I may edit somewhat after posting, but there won't be any major story changes if I do.

★ᵎᵎ I subconsciously took inspo from this fic for the chapel/meadow. I intentionally didn't read any knight/princess AUs as I wrote this series & I hadn't for a long time before, but I organized my bookmarked fics a couple weeks after finishing it, and when I saw that one I was like... shit, oops. please check out their work since they cooked so hard with that scene that it fully embedded itself in my brain!! :)<3

SPOILER WARNING BELOW
inspiration for the king/virus came from irish/celtic folklore, namely sea legends like merrows. If I went with "dark horse" as the title/overarching theme I would've went with the puca, but it made more sense to be simpler/canon-typical. so the virus to have a "trigger host" in the king/prince and ties in themes of the "divine right of kings". The virus is implied to draw power from its spread, similar to how some religions believe gods draw power from how many people believe in them, and how medieval kings were believed to be ordained by god to rule. I would've liked to go deeper into this, and if I write an epilogue it would be to tie up these loose ends (and have more smut hehe). But with all that said it's clearly inspired by Las Plagas too haha. I figured it'd be easier for readers to envision it in their heads if it were similar but with semi-aquatic comparisons added.
who is the prince? well, I really struggled with that. as I got into that part of the story, I really thought I'd need to name him, but looking back I probably didn't need to. I scoured the RE wiki looking for a name of a character that worked for Umbrella that had little to no backstory, but there wasn't a lot to work with, and it felt lame to come up with a random OC. But he's intended to be Glenn Arias in his time after collaboration with Los Illuminados. His involvement with this story would be his first trial run with his own virus, and it happening at a wedding works well with his backstory! His character/motivations are also a loose end I'd want to tie up in an epilogue.
Summary: It'd been three months since you had broken up, not that either of you were counting. Three months of switching shifts and dodging glances and doing anything not to get into everything that had gone wrong. Three months of lying to yourselves. It was all going fine until Robby had to call you just as you got home from your overnight shift; the person sitting in front of him as a patient in the ED warranting the break in silence. You both should have known you wouldn't be able to leave well enough alone after the fact.
