Okay, so I’ve been keeping up with the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake, to be blunt, I hate it, it’s one of the worst adaptations I’ve ever seen, dare I say, it’s ALMOST as bad as the M.Night Shamalan film, yeah, I went there
Let me preface this by saying, I don’t want to hate someone for their opinion, unless it’s genuinely problematic, but…
…HOW ON EARTH, HOW IN THIS UNIVERSE CAN ANYONE SAY NETFLIX AVATAR TREATED IT’S FEMALE CHARACTER’S BETTER AND GAVE THEM MORE AGENCY?
Katara has it the WORST, she feels so one in this, lacking her passion, her righteous fury, her temper, even her strong sense of passion doesn’t feel as present, she feels so generic
Azula is nowhere near is cunning, or intelligent here, the drill episode is completely missing, she straight up gets choked by Aang in the Avatar State and she only wins because, he shows her mercy. Not to mention her issues regarding Ursa won’t work, because Ursa literally says goodbye to her
Gone is Suki standing her ground against Sokka’s sexism and showing him who’s boss, showcasing that a girl can be strong warrior, no now she’s just thirsty for him instantly. That’s MORE sexist, great job Netflix
Mai is just completely obedient to Azula to the point of being willing to KILL, both Ty-Lee and Zuko. And Ty-Lee has no problems trying to kill Mai, both because Azula literally just tells them to
Even Toph, who’s the least bad, still feels like a watered down version of the character. Her wit isn’t as present, her bending leaves something to be desired (mostly due to the effects), her relationship with her parents loses its nuance (they’re basically bad guys in cahoots with Fire Nation) and her teaching Aang Earthbending is basically reduced to a scene where she just eggs him on
I mean look at this, it’s day and night
Additiobally, it’s not only the female characters, the main characters is absolutely butchered in this. Aang lacks so much of the depth and charm that made him a compelling protagonist. N:ATLA Aang is Aang for people who don’t like Aang
His backstory is completely changed, because he didn’t actually run-away, he just left to clear his head or something, he lacks joy, whimsy and child-like sense of fun he has in the original show, his bond with Katara is completely watered down and he’s nowhere near is supportive as he was, look at this nonsense
Most of Aang’s faults and character centric episodes are either downplayed or completely removed, such as him desperately trying to enter the Avatar State, his fury on the desert, the Guru is completely absent, literally all we have is Aang being a dick to Katara
The only times Aang really lashed out against his friends in the original show were “The Desert” and “Sozin’s Comet” and yes we don’t see him apologize, but in both cases he was upset for very understandable reasons, in the former he clearly realized he was wrong to lash out at the others by the end of the story, and in the latter he literally removes himself from the situation so he can calm down
Also Aang never saw Katara as a “prize” and she brought him out of the Avatar State, because she wanted to support and help her friend through hard times, what is this person on about
Lastly, OP says “I love that the male characters still get grace and empathy and are allowed to be vulnerable”, when that’s literally something that happens consistently in the original show, with Zuko especially, in this show he robs a pregnant woman for corn’s sake. Even Jet in the original show ultimately redeems himself, despite his tragic end
Looking at the tags underneath the original post, and this delusional line of thinking makes sense
OF COURSE it’s a Zutara Stan saying this nonsense, of course this think this tripe is better than the original show, it’s a freaking Zuko and Fire Nation glaze fest
OF COURSE they prefer a watered down version of Aang, his feelings for Katara are extremely downplayed, they don’t see him a threat to their fire/water ship
OF COURSE they don’t care that Katara is a shell of her former self, OMG Blue Spirit x Painted Lady fanfic is a reality, it doesn’t matter they took an episode dedicated to Katara’s strong sense of compassion and made it serve Zuko, it’s all about shipping
I don’t want to gatekeep, but these types of people were never fans of the original show to begin with, nor were they even fans of Katara to begin with, they just care about their fanfic ship becoming a reality, they genuinely don't give a crap about good writing or well-written characters
