Avatar God AU (Southern Gods)
I know I've literally got another au in the works already but i don't care man I love mythology and now they're gods >:)))))
Some info!
Katara and Sokka's face markings are based on the Painted Lady and Warrior makeup (respectively)-- on top of giving Sokka some winged eyeliner to resemble a wolf's markings (as the master of wolves), and a semi-circle on Katara's forehead as a symbol of equality (as the goddess of justice).
Gods don't technically "die" in this AU-- it doesn't happen often, but when it does, they usually become one with their domain. When Gyatso died, as the god of the wind, he turned into the wind and could only communicate through wind chimes (small signs/yes/no-- he can't communicate complex thoughts).
When Kya died, she turned into the starry sky. Hakoda, grieving his wife, would often study her form in the sky and learned to use the patterns of her stars to navigate, which made him become god of navigators.
When Kya died, people started praying to Sokka and Katara for matters of family and home-- it's not actually their domain, but they gratefully accept the duties that come with taking over for their mother.
Katara's necklace has sharp points in this to relate to her mother's star domain.
Katara's cloak is a sealskin (as the matron of sealife)
Yes, Sokka's leg is still hurt in this (still trying to figure out the story behind that, but I love when characters get permanent injuries in media and I'm KEEPING IT) he has a cane-- doesn't always need to use it but he has it!
Sokka's cloak is a polar bear dog's hide (as the god of hunting)

Im so grateful that we never had a major Katara vs Sokka episode, where they fought each other and stopped talking to each other. They're literally each other's best friends and most trusted people. As much as they don't get along sometimes, they never let it separate them.
some more water tribe siblings sketches
📣my lack of analysis and meta posts is due to writing my first-ever fic and lack of free time. I didn’t realise how stressful writing a fic can be but it’s enjoyable and I love how it’s turned out! I’d say I’m 70% finished with it and after running it by some of my mutuals (🫶🫶🫶) I can’t wait to show it to y’all!
recently I got back into atla
if tokka were to have a book, this would be the title 100%
atla characters and familial bonds.

as long as you love them.
i think my main issue with natla isn’t so much the acting but the fact that the actors can’t really do much with how their characters are written.
the biggest example being aang and katara, where separating them/barely making them interact doesn’t make sense in any way. if you take katara from being one of the most important main characters and reduce her to basically a side one (at best, in this case) you’re also taking away some of aang’s best qualities and vice versa. they balance each other out and even though they both have their own separate arcs, a lot of their growth happens because of each other because of how connected they are. you can’t take that away without the writing feeling dull. aang was never meant to deal with everything on his own, he gets through things with the rest of the gaang and while that applies to all of them, katara is the most important part of that dynamic because she’s the deuteragonist of the show. without her, aang ends up feeling lost and his problems getting magically solved off-screen isn’t going to cut it. making katara irrelevant is wrong for many, obvious reasons! these two are meant to work together, that’s the whole point. whether you ship them or not, you can’t have one without the other because their relationship is fundamental to both of their characters.
seeing abed nadir (danny pudi will always be abed in my eyes) show up in netflix’s avatar the last airbender was something i neither knew about nor expected but it instantly made the first episode so much better (as good as natla gets, at least…)
#lifeupdate: work is draining the life out of me but now i kind of like the idea of sokka working a minimum wage job because i have to convince myself it’s #aesthetic and #romanticizework to survive
Water tribe siblings !!!
katara and sokka separating/living far away from each other never resonated with me
AGREED I cannot imagine a life without my siblings. ANY of them. And I know most of the rambles here where in the tags but I agree with all of it, Sokka and Katara moving away from each other makes no more sense than AANG and Katara living away from each other, and I don't think Aang and Sokka would wanna stay far away for long, either, the tree of them are SO close. And yep, to me they do and always will live together forever. <3
same here! i can’t imagine my life without my twin, he’s my best friend! katara and sokka, throughout the whole show, have a very close sibling bond and it’s very clear how much they care about each other. i love to think that all three of them (with aang) live very close and pretty much nothing changes as they grow up! it’s the only plausible scenario for me 💙
katara and sokka separating/living far away from each other never resonated with me
“I’ll never turn my back on the people who need me”
because katara was always willing to help anyone who couldn’t help themselves. she knew what it felt like to be powerless when she was unable to protect her mother when she needed her most to the point where she let her grief shape her, which is why she refuses to stay passive ever again. she feels a moral obligation towards those who are vulnerable and afraid, having once been in their place, and will do anything for the greater good and to bring justice for all.
“You need me, and I’ll never turn my back on you”
because sokka would do anything for the people he loves. when everything is on the line, no matter if their plan is reckless or even if he has to put his own life at risk, they are always his priority. his identity revolves around keeping them safe from the moment his father told him that his place was beside his sister and his tribe, protecting them, no matter the cost. his deep rooted sense of responsibility and unwavering devotion towards them makes him push through anything to ensure their wellbeing.
