I’ve seen a lot of people comparing Hiyori’s sandbox scene to Makoto’s sandbox scene and because there are definitely some parallels, I just wanted to talk about the main differences between the two scenes a little.

The most obvious visual difference between the two scenes is that Makoto’s scene is bathed in a warm glow, the colours are warm and soft while in Hiyori’s scene, the colours are much colder, giving the scene a more lonesome feeling. Although these colour-differences are also there because of the time of day (Hiyori’s was clearly during the day while Makoto’s was during sunset) I do think they purposely portrayed their respective scenes this way, with Hiyori’s scene having a much colder colour scheme.

And in Makoto’s scene, the other child, Haru, reaches out to him while in Hiyori’s scene, the other child, “Tomo-chan” walks away from him and leaves him behind.

I think this summarises the main difference between these two scenes; for Makoto, it is a very fond memory of finding his dearest friend and he loves looking back on it because of that. While for Hiyori, it is a painful memory, the confirmation that he had no one because everyone left him alone. He watched how all the other kids are picked up by their parents while his parents left him alone yet again.

Makoto’s sandbox scene ends in friendship, while Hiyori’s sandbox scene ends in loneliness.

Guess what flashed through my mind.

(Some of you probably thought of this too, but I seriously just want to point this out.)

Because of Natsume-sensei’s words and mission for Fukuzawa (which is to become Mori’s bodyguard for a while), they worked together and became an invincible pair. Like Mori said, “Once in a blue moon, we’ll work together. And at times like those, we were always invincible.”

And then, because of the Arahabaki that Mori-sensei wanted Dazai to investigate, they met Chuuya. In that investigation, Dazai and Chuuya worked together, and like Mori and Fukuzawa, they were invincible. And then, Soukoku was formed.

And now, Dazai wanted Atsushi to work with Akutagawa. In Moby Dick, in Dead Apple, and in the Rats’ hideout. Just like the previous two, they were invincible. Even Ivan’s Stone Titan failed to regenerate when their abilities are combined. In the Guild arc, yes, Shin Soukoku was formed.

What’s beautiful is they’re black and white. One is light and one is dark.

You see my point, right?

Their personalities are polar opposites. Yet, when they work together, they’re almost perfectly coordinated.

What’s funny is there’s a sort-of-hate-and-respect between Mori and Fukuzawa, between Dazai and Chuuya, and between Akutagawa and Atsushi.

Yes, this is one of the most beautiful things in BSD.

It’s not about the ship.

It’s about the connection and how one improves because of the other and vice versa. In other words, their polishing.
