it felt terribly unfair to him how you could make him feel so nervous while you sat next to him, oblivious to his burning ears and avoidant gaze. he’s glaring at his desk until he hears his teacher’s voice mention the word, ‘maths’.
maths? at this time of year? it was nearing graduation. unfortunately for him, he was too preoccupied with having a staring contest against his poor desk, and he could only hear maths.
reluctantly, kunikuzushi taps your shoulder rather harshly, causing you to turn your head towards him. he felt the flare of nervousness creep up his neck, finding place at his ears as he asks,
“what did the teacher say?”
“oh, uh, he just said we’d be pairing up for the maths project that wasn’t able to be finished before the finals—now, i think?”
oh.
thinking of which, everyone in class nearly forgot about it, as he could hear the shocked and flabbergasted murmurs from his classmates. and, in which, he remembers now, that you were paired up with him.
one problem—he forgot the exact topic you both were supposed to be focused on.
fortunately, he hears you thinking out loud,
“what was the topic… uh… something like the runge’s phenomenon was it…?”
…what.
he doesn’t remember what topic you both chose, but it soon became obvious that the topic was pretty… terrible to handle with.
“yeah, it was the runge’s phenomenon! so,” you turn towards kuni, “what way should we do this?”
he feels his expression turn into a frown, which makes you chuckle slightly.
“…you remember what we worked on… right?”
“yeah, i do.”
he takes a look at you. it’s obvious that you’re not persuaded. yet he cannot find himself swallowing his pride and say that he doesn’t remember anything. you rest your hand on your forehead as you sigh, murmuring random mathematical jargon as you go through your maths notebook.
“…fine, fine, i don’t remember anything, happy?”
“it’s okay, i mean, i could help if you’d like?”
“i’ll co—”
the bell rings as his voice is cut off, the sound of chairs screeching and students shuffling and talking overpowering his own.
pinching the bridge of his nose, he turns, “never mind, i can do it myself.”
he leaves, hand going through his hair as you sit on your chair, slightly dumbfounded as your classmates shuffle out in hurry through the narrow doorway.
“it’s getting late, c’mon, i’ll get you home. you don’t want to freeze to death, do you? it’s going to snow heavily soon.”

you hide your phone under the desk, and turn your head to the teacher to listen to the lecture.
yet that familiar and squeamish feeling of your heart starting to run a marathon comes settling into your chest, urging you to leave.
why, why, why?
during school? couldn’t it wait?
stumbling out of class, it’s obvious how pale you are.
your heart beats, million beats per minute as you feel like you can’t take control of your own body anymore. your motor control doesn’t work, and you’re just thankful that you managed to slide down to a corner where barely anyone visits.
perhaps it was your fear, your sobs choked in silent plea as tears cover your vision.
you can’t help but want to run away, just for your inability to stand as footsteps start to become closer towards your direction.
they stop, and you can feel that they’re in front of you, looking at you with mild amusement as they try to contain their laughter.
barely managing to raise your head, you cannot help but feel both mortified and relieved at the same time to see not a laughing, but a concerned kunikuzushi, standing idle in front of your crouched form.
but your tears don’t stop as they seem to pour harder than ever, with your breaths becoming even more unstable, air not reaching your lungs as you feel as if you would suffocate.
kuni, eyes widening at your worsening situation, makes haste in crouching in front of you, hesitant to make contact as his hands stay mid air, unsure whether it would be alright for him to comfort you with his… colourful choices of words.
yet the way you look even more pained, his hands reach out to pull you in, rather awkwardly but to his best, before his thoughts manage to process what he did. your tears soak through his shirt on his shoulder, though he doesn’t care as he does his best to let you calm down. his hand comes to pat your back, attempting a comforting motion as he lets out a sigh in relief as he feels your state becoming more stable.
snapping back to his self, his face explodes into a warm shade of pink, as he waits for you to calm down. your arms loosen from his back as you rub out your tears, smiling lightly in gratitude.
“...thank you.”
kuni nearly spits out a ‘whatever’, until he remembers how shaken up you still may be,
“are you okay?”
your eyes widen slightly at his surprisingly considerate response.
“mhm.”
once you leave, washing your face with cold water, you thank your deskmate again during the last class of the day.
“y’know, why did you decide to help me? i thought you’d laugh…aha–actually, never mind. thanks!”
“i’m not horribly mean.”
“well, i know now–i don’t mean it in a bad way i swear–” your hands flail around, attempting to explain yourself, although cut off by kuni.
“would you… never mind. forget i said anything.” he turns his head away from you, chin propped up on his hand.
you smile weakly, “penny for your thoughts? you shouldn’t let thoughts rot in your mind.”
he shakes his head, as the teacher leaves the classroom, ending the last lesson of the day.
hands clammy, breaths short, feeling air leave your lungs, your shaking hands reach towards your phone.
3 am, on a school night.
your eyelids can’t seem to close without the creeping fear of a nightmare coming back again.
unlocking your phone, you felt tempted to call someone. pressing on the green icon, you call the first person you see.
your voice is shaky, you can tell,
“...can i come over?”
…
you stand in front of the door, helmet still on your head, sniffling as you wait for the door to open.
with a loud creak that echoes in the cold night air, you’re pulled in lightly as the door closes. turning on the lights of the entrance, a pair of hands pull your helmet from your head, worried gaze looking at your tear stained face and eyes.
“again?”
you nod, breath still shaky and unstable, your heart seeming to run miles and miles without a chance for it to slow down. it was as if all the energy you had carried its merry way towards your heart as it gladly took and took and took strength away. soon, your legs give out, held tight, as you’re taken towards the living room.
you’re amazed how you managed to carry you and your bike here, but you can’t seem to comprehend it as your strength gives out, feeling fatigued.
and when you’re about to be left at the couch, you feel like crying again, as your voice gives out a hoarse, choked out cry, hands frantically grabbing onto the hem, begging to not be left alone.
you’re held tight, silent sobs racking out from your ribcage as you feel your eyes start to close, vision blurry as you slowly drift off to your needed rest.
your hand still pulls, as if saying ‘don’t leave’.
furina’s voice cuts off when albedo trips, slamming headfirst into your abdomen as you both fall, your back making harsh contact with the linoleum ground. albedo lies face first on the ground as well, a mere few centimetres away from you on your right as he groans in pain. before your head crashes, furina’s quick to balance your head, eyes filled with worry.
xiao helps albedo from the ground, where you can notice the redness of the impact start to fade into his face.
“ow…” you both groan in pain, as your upper body is helped to sit up by furina beside you, hands gentle as she helps. albedo stands, although slightly wobbly, as xiao helps him balance his steps.
at the corner of your eye, you see kunikuzushi, face red, likely with anger, glaring holes into albedo’s form. you swear you felt a worried glance from him, but perhaps it was the shock of the impact, as you let furina take you towards the infirmary along with xiao and albedo. venti soon follows, hastily putting his phone into his pocket.
the trip to the infirmary is pretty quiet–slightly awkward– and when you’re helped on one of the beds, you wince at the pain on your back as a whole, face scrunching into an emotion of discomfort.
rapid running steps are heard in the hallway as the door slides open with a slam, as you see wriothesley walking up to you, pale grey eyes laced with worry as he stands next to venti.
he’s quick to glare for a short moment at albedo, although it soon disappears when he sees the start of a bruise form at the blonde’s forehead.
“what in the world,” he sighs, “happened here?”
you shrug, although its followed by a quick wince. wriothesley glances back at albedo, who laughs with a slightly guilty tone. xiao, who stands next to albedo’s bed, looks away, a hand at his temple as he sighs.
“well,” xiao starts, “albedo said something to kuni, which made him mad, then turned into a chase, and (y/n) happened to be there…” he trails off.
“i tripped and slammed face first into (y/n).” albedo finishes.
“yeah, i heard.” the grey eyed says, “venti tweeted about it.”
furina, unusually quiet, turns her head towards venti in such quick motion that you swear you felt wind smack your face.
“you tweeted it?” her face contorts in annoyance, “your friend was hurt!”
venti puts his arms up, “i was gonna check on her too– but i was more further away from you guys, i was just going to your classroom to meet up, you know?”
“but–”
“hey, at least i didn’t have a concussion, right?” your voice cuts off furina’s, hand reaching to hold hers in yours. you did not want to have a fight go on in front of you today.
the heterochromic eyed girl sighs, eyes blinking with force as she huffs. on the other hand, venti looks away, face unable to look at the two of you.
meanwhile, kinich joins kunikuzushi in the empty hallway, green eyes squinting as the other sighs, eyebrows furrowed in either anger or concern, who knows.

the school bell rings an old chime, as students bustle up in excitement to go home or to their clubs and circles. you lay back on your chair for a little, waiting for the majority of students to leave.
“hey”
a voice is heard next to you, as you turn your head slightly to face your desk mate.
“what?”
“nothing.”
you squint your eyes in slight irk as you return to your table, hoisting your bag to pack your things. you sigh a little, tired to go to practice as you pull your bag onto your shoulder.
“tired?”
“kind of, yeah.”
“go home and get some rest.”
your hand reaches up to pinch your nose bridge, as you sigh out, “well, i have my circle to attend to, did you forget?”
your deskmate momentarily freezes as he crosses his arms and looks away. you manage to hear a small, “oh, yeah, sorry” before you leave.
footsteps hasty, you manage to reach the door in time, as you greet everyone in the room.
“good afternoon~!”
venti’s head whips around, his braids slapping his face as he winces, greeting you with an enthusiastic wave. xiao, sitting at his stool behind the drum kit, waves a small hi. xinyan meets you with a big smile, hands occupied with her bass. barbara waves, singing a little ‘good afternoon’ back.
“should we start choosing which song we perform then?”
meanwhile, the midnight blue haired boy leaves the classroom in a hurry once you leave, loosened black tie nearly falling off as he jumps down the stairs and steps towards the collection of vending machines in school. he’s greeted by a boy with black hair, seemingly trying to swat a yellow and green parrot away from his shoulder.
“what are you doing-”
“kuni, can you kick him away?”
the parrot squawks out an offended ‘what?!’ and screeches when kunikuzushi stalks up towards him.
“why the fuck did you adopt it then, kinich?”
kinich sighs and shakes his head, “i have no idea.”
the two stand around the vending machines, waiting for circle activities to end, seeing xiao’s bandmates waving enthusiastic goodbyes. kinich and kunikuzushi walk up to greet him, but stop when they see you, talking to xiao, very most likely about the band in school.
“…maybe you can… accents when… sings so the… sounds clearer…”
“…got it…”
were the only things they could make out from the conversation, as you pat his shoulder in appreciation as you wave a small goodbye. once you left, xiao walks over to the two as he puts money in the machine to get a drink.
“how was practice?”
“we’re performing for the graduation event.”
“oh, nice, did you choose a song?”
a platinum blonde haired boy chimes in, hands still in white latex gloves as he rests on the railing of the stairs.
“no, not yet, we don’t know what song we should go with.”
on the other hand, you make your way towards your friends at the end of the school entrance, finding furina and venti goofing around, with wriothesley looking at them with an amused look. when they notice you. furina makes a sad, hurt face, wailing into your arms as she points at venti, “he was making fun of me, (y/n), knock some sense into him!”
“i did not!”
sighing, you pat furina’s back as she’s pulled away from you by wriothesley, as you all make your way towards the primary school that wriothesley’s younger sister waits for her older brother and his friends to pick her up.
