There is something lonesome about Mr. Inference.
He spends most of his days (and nights) cooped up in his office organizing paperwork, writing reports, and putting two and two together.
And yet, some people just manage to get through locked doors (both physical and mental) to get on the detective's last nerves.
He considers himself a common man with common thoughts. No plaque or statue will be dedicated to his name, that will sooner be forgotten than remembered.
The detective cups the bowl of his pipe, exhaling a stream of smoke as he looks up at the drab ceiling of his office. Steel blue eyes stare up at the ceiling lost in thought, his classic coat hanging off of the leather chair he sat in.
The doorknob rattles. What?
Half of a moment passes. The door hastily creaks open and the detective doesn't even need to look to see who it is, the sound of black shoes clicking against the wood already making his head ache.
A figure with a mop of brown hair against porcelain skin sits on his desk. He watches, he is always watching. Naib continues to write and write and write with no end in sight.
"I believe it's past working hours, dear detective."
"Work picks up around this time."
"You're neglecting yourself, Naib."
The assault of ink to paper is halted. Naib suddenly feels the weight of exhaustion presses itself upon him.
"What do you need now." His voice is like a tangy whiskey against ice.
The surveyor hums, hands splayed on the mahogany of the desk. "Nothing, as of now. But a close friend of ours wanted me to check on you."
It doesn't take a genius to know who.
Naib puts his lips to the stem of his pipe and inhales, pulling away. He exhales away from Eli, offering the pipe to him. He takes his offer and repeats the same motion Naib does. Smoke hits the side of the detective's face.
"I know you won't talk about it Naib. Even it might kill you," Eli started, exhaling leftover smoke.
"But you have people you can talk to." The detective's brows furrowed.
"I know."
"Okay."
The two of them sat in pregnant silence. Eli observed what he saw. A man drowning himself in paperwork. His hair was messy, his overcoat draped over his chair, white collared shirt with 2 buttons open, you could see his rich olive skin-
Let's look at something else.
"I got you something." Eli interrupts his own thoughts. Naib looked over at him.
"I'm not going to get drunk with you." Naib cuts in.
"You're no fun," Eli pouts, setting the 'surprise' bottle of bourbon on the desk.
Naib just rolls his eyes, smoking the pipe again.
This time, Eli can't resist.
Almost as soon as he exhales the smoke Eli leans over the desk, planting a kiss on Naibs chapped lips. The detective's perpetually tired eyes widen a fraction, a hand suddenly gripping the desk.
As Eli pulls away he feels the detective grip a wrist of his. He watches him wet his lips.

GANJI GUPTA, also known as the manor's one and only Batter, acts as a lone wolf. He most likely wonโt start conversations and will keep his answers short. Though, itโs just another barrier he puts up out of the need for protection. He doesnโt know who he can confide in here and, in his eyes, everyone seems to be another untrustworthy person out for their wants and needs. Thatโs all that they are sized down to at the beginning.
GANJI GUPTA struggles with being alone, at least, less than most others. He has experience with the feeling, but everyone caves eventually. He, on the other hand, can withstand it for quite some time.
GANJI GUPTA who, after quite some time, starts to warm up a bit more to the manor inhabitants. Realizing that itโs better not to hold any grudges if youโre going to be stuck here for all eternity.
GANJI GUPTA enjoys the company of others most when they play cricket with him. It doesnโt even matter if theyโre good or not, he finds the act endearing and appreciates it more than anyone could imagine.
GANJI GUPTA would need a partner who takes things slow with him. Someone who understands that he (sometimes) has his moments, and will give him the time and space to sort through them. That might mean leaving your side for a while or hitting some cricket balls as far as he possibly can, imagining that all his anger flies away with it.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โณ However, there are moments where neither of these things can help him and he needs you instead. Help him to breathe again, and talk him through it instead. Distract his mind from thinking about why he was so upset in the first place. Just, donโt treat him like a child.
GANJI GUPTA who canโt help but feel jealous as you laugh and joke around with the others. Thereโs a part of him that sometimes wishes he too could enjoy the company of the rest but is too shy to say it. Although, if you happen to pick up on it, grab his hand and pull him into the conversation. Heโll find the flow, eventually.
GANJI GUPTA also hates the pit of spitefulness that pools in the bottom of his stomach when he notices someone else flirting with you. He goes red in the face with his arms crossed and looks furious. The Batter canโt seem to grasp how other people arenโt yet aware of your relationship and is quick to wrap an arm around your waist and come up with some lossy excuse to pull you away elsewhere.
โณ You can't help but whine a bit as the Batter pulls you away. You had a friendly conversation going on with the โPrisonerโ, whatโs the matter? As you continue your complaining, it dawns on Ganji that, you hadnโt realized heโd been trying to court you the entire time.
GANJI GUPTA will always use his last cricket ball to benefit you in a match. Whether itโs to save you from your third chair or to help prolong your kite, he never hesitates to use it for your sake. Heโs gotten some rather harsh comments on it before, but he just ignores them and carries on with his day.
GANJI GUPTA deals with frequent night terrors that wake the both of you up. Heโs quick to apologize, brushing it off as if it were nothing. Unfortunately, the tears in his eyes give him away. You donโt ask what they were about, and you probably shouldnโt for now. All he wants is to fall asleep in your embrace with the reminder that youโre here. That you are alive.

a howl and thunk of a ball crashing against the hip of Fools Gold brings you back to reality, especially when you're dropped and a head of fluffy black hair rounds the corner.
he's yelling words you can't understand, blood and your own heartbeat clogging the ability to hear, but you get the gist when he slams another ball into the hunter and mouths 'GO'.
a shiny portal stands a bit away, ganji trying to guide you and simultaneously protect you towards it. the opportunity arises when william, the forward, crashes into Fools Gold, communicating something towards ganji, whose hand situates itself by your hip, trying his best to tug you along.
he tries and fails to say something again before, seemingly letting out a curse; his dirty gloves are quick to grasp the sides of your face, crashing his chapped lips against your bloody ones.
before you can even utter a word, he shoves you through the portal, fiona priming the cipher on the other side before she let's go to heal you.
the exhaustion subsides while she helps you back up, whispering a command to head to the door in preparation for the pop; which you follow obediently.
in the end, it comes to a tie, you and william getting downed, trying to open the back gate, launching back to the manor with tired smiles and blood-soaked skin.
when awakened, you realize ganji sits besides your bed in your room, his now gloveless hand holding yours.
he only moves when you give his hand a squeeze and croak out a greeting. "save your strength." he grunts back, thumbing the now clean skin of your hand.
though you only respond by dragging his hand up to your lips, pressing a light kiss to the inner wrist; smiling at his cheeks growing pink.
"what was that for?" he grumbles but doesn't pull away, instead bring both his own hands to grasp yours, returning the favor by shyly peppering his own kisses along your skin.
"you started it. just wanted to get the shared feeling across." you hum, quietly giggling at his puppy faced look.

You say it to him after a match where one reckless move couldโve killed you.
Itโs night when the Batter, Ganji Gupta, holds you tight in his arms. Maybe a little too tight for your liking, but you did put him in a frightening situation earlier today. You recall shoving him out of the way in order to save him from a blow to your head. You don't remember much after that. Just blurry memories of being in Emily's office and then, returning to your room with Ganji.
โGanji,โ you sigh, clawing at his arms in an attempt to free yourself from his grasp, even if itโs just a little bit. โYouโve gotta loosen up a little bit, please. Iโm really sorry I did that earlier, but you needed to get outโฆโ
Ganji is quick to stop your rambling by holding you (somehow) even tighter than before. โ[name], you got hit on the head with an axe. None the less, a Detention hit. If Iโโ Ganji sucked in a deep breath of air, letting it fall from his mouth before speaking again. "If I hadn't used my last ball I don't think you would've struggled out in time. And I don't want to think about having to leave you behind because that was your last chair."
Immediately, Ganji stiffens and sits ups. he seems to have finally processed what just happened.
"[name]. you could've died. And for what?" Ganji repeats the question while shaking you by your shoulders, tears pricking at his eyes threating to fall.
You cup his face and put your forehead to his, allowing his to fulling chompreheand the choice you made during the last match.
"I understand it was stupid of me," You start, closing your eyes. "But I don't do things without reason."
The Batter quickly wipes away at his falling tears, suddenly feeling embarrassed. "Then why did you do it? You said it yourself, it was a stupid choice."
"Yes, but I did it for you. I did it because I have put more trust into you than anyone else in this wretched manor. And I knew, that even if I didn't make it out during that last game, that you would still be okay. Surviving another match means surviving another day. And for you, I'd do that again."
"God," Ganji wipes at his nose. "I hope you don't."
โฆโ THE PROSPECTOR
You say it to him when youโre tired and vulnerable. when anything can happen.
It was early in the morning when the Prospector, Norton Campbell, snuck into your room to pry you awake from your slumber. With your bedroom key in hand (you gave it to him in case of an emergency), he tip toed into your room. He couldnโt help but silently laugh as he peered at your morning appearance. Hair a mess with a side of droll staining your pillow. Cute, but he can stare more later.
The Prospector is quick to shake you awake, pinning your arms to your side so you donโt land a hit on him in fear of being attacked. As he hovers above you, he explains that thereโs something he wishes to show you.
โBut Norton,โ you whisper into his ear โthe sun isnโt even up yet.โ You hoped the darkness of your room could conceal the light blush on your face.
โExactly why I want you to come with me. I promise itโll be worth it.โ Norton mumbled, pulling you out from under the covers. Sliding on a pair of shoes, you drag your achy body behind him and follow the Prospector outside the manor.
Fresh dew covered the grass outside, making it a bit wet and chillier than usual outside. Fortunately, Norton had came prepared. Set up outside was a big fluffy blanket with more than enough pillows to spare. Two mugs of coffee residing inside.
โEver seen the sunrise?โ Norton asks, already knowing the answer based off your shocked expression.
You shake your head no as the Prospector reaches to grab your hand and lead you towards the spot. It didnโt take long to get settled, and when you did, you found your head in the core of Nortonโs lap.
โOh? Whatโs this?โ Norton teased โcold arenโt yaโ?โ You shiver in his arms as a response. Before grabbing his face with your hands. Itโs a weird position, but Norton doesnโt mind. Instead he leans into your touch. A soft smile on his face.
โHave I ever told you how much I trust you?โ You ask with genuine curiosity.
โIโm not sure, have you?โ Norton questions, brushing your hair to the side of your face.
โNo, Iโm being serious. Stuck in a place like this leaves everyone fending for themselves. But because I have you, I have someone to watch my back. I really appreciate that Norton. I trust you more than anyone else in this manor.โ
Norton looks at you with sad eyes as he bends down to place a gentle kiss upon your forehead.
โI trust you more, doll.โ He says as the sun starts to rise. Showering you in its warmth and light, a feeling he now resonates when it comes to you.
โฆโ THE MERCENARY
You say it to him during a particularly risky match where everything seems to be on the line.
There are time where a match can go inexplicably well, where everything goes absolutely perfect and you survive the game with all your limbs intact and the egotistical pride that comes with it.
Those arenโt all the time though, and when both sides are fighting it out until their last breath, it turns into a messy and an undoubtedly long match.
This seems to be one of them, and youโve collected more than enough scars and bumps and bruises to prove it. Youโre more than sure youโll have to make a stop by Emilyโs offfice, but nowโs not the time to think about that. You must stay focus on your current task: stitching up Naib.
Sangria got him good this time as a long scar has taken shape on his back. Naib bites down on his bottom lip in an attempt to stifle the whimpers of pain he feels. He thought he was better at this. Better at pretending he wasnโt hurting. You know him all too well though.
โmโ sorry, โm sorry I know it hurts. I promise Iโll be done in just a second.โ You say in attempt to comfort and reassure him. All he does is nod his head and sucks in a breath of air in order to steady himself.
The Mercenary is off the second he feels you tighten the last of his bandages. Youโre quick to jump onto a cipher machine as well to catch up on the progress that was lost.

This match has been nothing short of a living, breathing disaster.
You still can't shake the ear piercing scream Fiona let out as she was hit down again minutes later, and you won't forget the horrible cut that now runs across Naib's stomach. Youโd stich it up but you donโt have the time for it. Not when Fiona needs rescuing.
โNaib, take over the last cipher. I have to go in.โ You tell the Mercenary, racing past him. He stops you, grabbingโno, shaking you by the shoulders.
โNo, please, [name] donโt go in there. Itโs not worth it we can, we can getโโ he continues to trip over his words out of fear and desperation. โplease [name], I donโt wanna lose you.โ
โNaib, I promise Iโll be out soon. I trust you, I wouldnโt go in if I didnโt.โ And thatโs that. You place a quick kiss on his forehead before dashing off towards Fionaโs chair. You hear him scream your name out afterwards.

She has a tendency to steal little accessories from you; little rings in your jewelry box or a necklace you left on your nightstand, but if shes feeling daring, a jacket or an acessory from a costume Nightingale gave you
But she wears them with happiness into her next match. Lily claims that she does "1000 times better when shes wearing a good-luck charm fished straight from your closet!!"
You two climb onto the roof to talk about anything on your minds, usually life before the manor.
It usually ends with someone like Naib calling for you two to come down and get back inside lol
Lily's kisses pepper your scrunched up face, like a non-stop onslaught of little kisses. Sometimes, they are on your lips, her arms wrapped around your neck as she closes her eyes and imagines you and her aren't just sitting on the floor of her bedroom in the manor and are instead in the outside world.
She feels overjoyed when shes with you, hand in hand as you walk to your next match together.
Lily feels like she can do anything she puts her mind to when she's right by your side.
just so you guys know. joseph shot up from (around) ninth place to THIRD in two days. because there's a massive push from the cn server to go onto global and mass vote for him to put him in first. maybe the vote counts are "accurate" but they're not legitimate. even if this isn't bot voting, it's certainly not fair. nobody is happy with this.
even if joseph doesn't win this year, it sets a dangerous precedent for future years if netease doesn't actually do anything about these dummy accounts who are being mass-created and sent to vote for joseph. i know there's only so much they can do but it's not comforting that the best they have is this lukewarm twitter announcement and ten memory spheres.

Martha often appears in your life in fragments.
You think of her like some sort of mirage for you to chase after, untouchable no matter how close you get. She reappears in your life every once in a while to take your hands and whisk you away for a night. It never matters where; she has a way of breathing magic into every one of your few encounters together. Another week, another escapade. It's routine by now.
The music of the city still pulsates through your bones when she brings you back from another night out. Martha steps off to a nearby fence, cigarette dangling from her fingers. You suck in a sharp breath. As the night quiets down, your mind sobers up, and the magic fades, with only Martha as the last of your enchantment. Unconsciously, your gazes draws back to her.
A stray fleck of confetti clings to her hair just above her ear. You find your way to her, a small smile on your lips, and swiftly pluck it out. You don't think anything of it, until she seizes your hand and holds it to her cheek.
A few lingering seconds pass.
It takes all of your strength to ignore the flare rising in your chest. You can only pin your gaze on her โ at all of the warmth in her eyes, familiar yet never lasting long enough; at those parted lips and their silent plea to spill out the words she swore never to voice again.
Maybe this time, you try to convince yourself, my mind isn't just playing tricks on me. You pick up each of her unspoken wishes.
"Martha," you start, gently prying your hand out of her grasp. "Am I in your way?"
It's a vague question, poorly strung together from your jumbled thoughts. But Martha knows exactly what you're trying to ask. She sends back a lopsided smile, lifting her cigarette for a quick suck off it. "You often are," she says.
She'll always find a way to duck out of prying questions, no matter how swiftly you pin her on the spot. She might've even been expecting it. You can detect a hint of guilt in her little half-joke. Still, you had to ask it while you have her attention.
"No, really," you push. "I feel like you always stop before you really want to. Am I holding you back from something?"
Your mind wanders to all the nights you've spent with her-- all the times she has slid you onto her lap, trailing kisses up your neck; the satisfaction in her hum whenever she breaks away; her warmth when she traces the work she left on your swollen lips. She'll murmur about how sweet you feel in her arms, and how she pities that this could never be something more.
Those constant nevers leave ugly gashes in your heart each time. Sometimes you feel like little more than a distraction. A wrench in her routine, kept around only to shake up the monotony of her normal duties. Martha, noble as she is reckless, does not like to deviate from her routines for long -- so the second she is called away again, she will cut you off without warning. That's how she always has been.
Why do you keep letting her come back?
She pivots her focus solely to you whenever she's in town, and you always believe her love is true. Call it naive, but you can't help it. You desperately wish that her nevers might change for you, turning into: I'll never let you go. That someday the tenderness in her touch will last.
Martha turns her back to the fence, propping her elbows up on either side of her. She lets out an affected hum.
"I guess I didn't meet your expectations tonight then?" She reaches for your waist, tugging you into her arms. "My bad. I'll make it up to you." Her fingers affectionately ruffle your hair, but once again, she's skipped over the point. On purpose, you're sure.
"I really do love you," she continues, lips falling to your ear. "It's not you that's holding me back. Actually, knowing I'll always find you in my way-- that's what keeps me going."
Always so cruel. But it works like a charm on you everytime. Maybe this once, her words might be genuine.

You have the eyes of someone who has gazed at few possible traumatic scenarios and the skin of one who not been lashed by the harsh truths of the world. He squishes down his feeling of envy when he feels he's going too far down the rabbit hole of his thoughts.
But now, as he bandages up your wound from the cold Night Watch, he can't help but realize how that weighs you down. It wasn't supposed to be you with the gash in your thigh it was supposed to be the teammate you wasted no time saving. You took a hit for them, and for what? So they could have a futile 5 seconds to run as fast as they could only for the harsh winter wind to yank them back to the hunter? You we're such a fool, having so much faith in these people.
But that's what led you two to become such a power couple. You gave him a chance.

He looks angry and you feel nervous because of it.
"I'm sorry for getting injured." You mumble quietly. You don't expect a 'Its fine' or a 'Its not your fault' because this was a rookie mistake and you by no means are a rookie.
He remains silent, finishing up dressing your wound. His gloved hands go to hold your thighs as you sit in some corner of burned down building in the Arms Factory.
"Don't do that again." He states. Its not up for debate and you silently nod, moving to give his forehead a kiss as you steady yourself to get up and work on getting out of here.

Fools Gold let out a teasing laugh as he shoved you into a chair. He leaned on the wall behind it as you glared up at him. Fools gold clicked his tongue (does he even have one??) and fake pouted, most likely mocking you.
"D'aw, don't look at me like that, Babyface. You wouldn't be like this if you didn't sacrifice yourself for that silly little seer."
At least he was brutally honest.
Your muscles are screaming at you and you can feel them throbbing after you spent the last 2 minutes running and jumping and rolling to get away from him.
He traces your jawline with his pickaxe, you can feel your face heat up as Fools Gold lets out a wheezing chuckle. "All bark huh?"
You try to stutter out a response not until you see the ground beside you break. This was going to take a while.
