Siân Phillips and Michael Byrne as Romeo and Juliet (2010) I know I usually only post about Maggie Smith, but I’m making the exception for this beautiful picture. I’ve been reading about the Tom Morris production of Romeo and Juliet (renamed Juliet and her Romeo in this instance), that was staged at Bristol Old Vic in 2010. The production re-imagined Shakespeare’s classic tale of young love, setting it instead in a nursing home with Juliet and Romeo as pensioners. It got rave reviews. As the production’s director Tom Morris said, “Why shouldn’t people who are 80 have the same life-transforming experience when they fall in love as a 14-year-old? The difference isn’t between young and old love: this is a story about people falling in love. You actually see that moment dramatised. And you can apply that to any age.” Fellow theatre practitioners, and those in Hollywood and the film industry as a whole, please take note!
