My friends Mahmoud and Mahrah are siblings from Gaza. I have been friends with Mahrah since early 2025. She introduced me to her brother later that year, and I introduced both of them to my wife. Israel has destroyed 1,109 out of Gaza's 1,244 mosques, so residents were forced to perform Eid prayers in small open-air prayer spaces, streets, or tents in displacement centers.
The quote over this image was said to me today by my friend Mahmoud. He has been separated from his family in Gaza, unable to return to them for three years due to Israel's control over crossings. For three years he has only been able to have a phone call with his family on this holiday to send them love and peace. He has not been able to hug them or share a meal with them.
Eid al-Fitr is a festival of breaking the fast, but in Gaza it remains extremely difficult to afford enough food due to merchants raising prices in response to Israeli imposed border-closures. I asked how his family is faring and he said that they send their love and "they, by God, depend on what you send from the campaign. They currently have no source of income other than donations."
