Beholding such desperate praises to a meaningless concept, one might wonder if this, too, was the product of Shion losing her last wits. Rika had witnessed countless massacres in her time; so much of that brutality had come from Shion’s end that the words sung to her fell on partially deaf ears. Looking at her cold composure, it was almost as if the Rika standing there now was a completely different person from the loving and kind Rika that Shion knew.

Forgiveness. If that was all they needed, these tragedies would have ceased long ago. 

“Is that so?” A flat question, soft in contrast to her friend’s passionate tone. “Even so... Do you think forgiveness will be enough? Do you think it will undo the chain reaction you’ve caused? Don’t tell me you’ve already reached that level of delusion, Shion.”

There had been something unusual obstructing Rika’s usual path to school. 

On the dirt road dividing the rice paddies, she’d found a dusty brown lump; further inspection had revealed it to be a puppy. The young dog’s tongue laid listlessly stretched out, legs twitching at random intervals without more than ragged breathing on its part. Though she’d elected to poke at it with a stick to gauge the safety of being near it, the fact that her attention left it at the first sound of footsteps proved the reason behind the action foolhardy. 

“He’s sick,” she lamented to a concerned Frisk. “Something is wrong with him.”

That was the intention. 

Half of it, anyway; not being found. Some quiet personal time to abate the dregs of a hangover that still lingered from the night previous. She didn’t expect Mion to just postpone the club like that; didn’t think that her being missing from the scene was that much of a deal. The Mions from worlds now dead hadn’t, so why assume anything would change in that regard? They would see each other again on Monday anyway. It didn’t really matter.

(Then again, nothing did. ) 

She hadn’t been expecting to run into Mion during her Sunday grocery-shopping, however.
