the sounds of the walkers outside caused sweat to bead on his forehead, his fingers curling around his weapons so tight, his knuckles were turning white. it was just their luck to have been cornered like this; like lab rats in a maze. how many days had passed since he found addy? how many days since he gently guided her out of the blood-stained wreckage of what used to be her home? she was finally starting to recover over what had happened, the story she told simon always caused a chill to run through his body. nearby was their destination, where the others of the group waited. he had managed to get in contact with them after he found addy, and everyone agreed at a meeting point. unfortunately, it appeared that simon and addy were going to have to take a detour. but could they outrun the z’s? the fastest ones? they had little to no ammunition left, and there was only so many they could take out with their melee’s. the minute they had barricaded the doors, simon’s mind started flying a thousand miles a minute. eyes flitting around them, taking in their current surroundings. he had to kick his brain into gear if he wanted to get them out alive– or at least addy, if anything. some sort of apartment store, perhaps two-stories tall. no doubt there’d be a leverage to get on the roof some how. not much they could use in terms of staving off the rabid hoard of zombies outside. simon was quick to guide addy upstairs, searching out the windows. as he peeked out of one, there was another ladder that disappeared up to the roof. “addy, i found roof access.” as she appeared next to him, a small wave of butterflies swarmed through his belly, heating his face. this was no time to be thinking of such things! with a bit of struggle, they had managed to push the window up, simon allowing the other to crawl through first. just as she made it on the small ledge outside, a sudden loud banging from downstairs drew his attention. no doubt the zombies had broken through the barricade finally. as simon moved to the room door, he popped his head out. shadows of the hoard below danced along the walls before the first one came into view on the stairs. addy’s voice rang out from behind him, causing him to close the door quietly as to not raise attention. he had to get her out safely… plucking the WT from his pocket, he flicked it on, leaning in to whisper so addy couldn’t hear. he knew mack and the others would be listening on the other side. simon had to keep his voice steady as he gave them their current location, and their predicament. and he knew, without a doubt, they would be there in a heartbeat. though one too late for himself alone. soft static answered him, but simon was confident that the others had heard him. turning swiftly, the soldier made his way back to the window where addy was impatiently waiting for him. shrugging off the backpack married to his shoulders, simon tossed it over to addy, handing her the walkie talkie along with it. there was a questioning look in her gaze but she said nothing as she took them, pushing them to the side. there was a slight hesitance on his part before he beckoned her closer. when she closed the distance, simon reached out, gingerly placing his hands on either side of her face. he leaned in and covered her lips with his own. the kiss was gentle, but in other ways, also firm. it had been too long since he last kissed anyone, much less someone he truly cared for deep down. there would be no way out for him in this situation, and that was something he didn’t mind so much anymore. simon pulled addy closer, deepening the kiss as he poured all of his emotions and adoration into it. trying to convey his feelings for her with just that one action. even if she did not return them, it was all he could do to keep from breaking. there was fear in him, of course, but that fear he kept down, not wanting to seep it into addy. he only wanted her to feel encouraged; flightless as he felt when he was around her. he wasn’t going to make it out, but she was. she was going to survive for the both of them. his tongue slipped across her lips, but prodded no further than that. as they shared that brief moment of a kiss, the fleeting happiness he was so desperate to hold on to, simon sought out the metal bat that addy always held with her. the only thing that could break the window with enough force. he slipped it behind his back as his free hand brushed against her cheek. finally he broke the kiss, tongue sliding along his bottom lip at the lingering taste of the woman before him. there was a frown on her brows as she stared at him, obviously confused at what he did. simon said nothing, only brushing his fingers along her face, along her jawline, under her chin. his touch was feather light, affectionate even. “you have to survive, addy. people need you.” he smiled then, before he shoved her back, lifting his arms to slam the window shut. from outside, she wouldn’t be able to open it. and as he watched her search for her weapon, he held it up for her to see, alerting her that he had taken it. just as she started to pound against the glass, the door behind him made a splitting sound. he watched as addy’s eyes widened in desperation and horror. he could almost see the zombies through the reflection. he wasn’t going to make it out, but she was… simon finally turned to face the monsters that awaited him, metal bat in hand. the hoard had all moved upstairs, some still straining to push into the tiny room. fear enveloped him entirely, the sadness near breaking his heart. with a slight shift, simon glanced back at addy, her mouth moving as if calling out for him. or just calling out. even with fear on her face, she was still so beautiful. the most beautiful woman… all simon could do then was offer a meek smile in her direction.
