to say that current humans are the only species to have developed storage methods would be a vast overstatement of their abilities. using such storage to keep precious items was again, nothing new to the yaksha.
it is the nature of living beings to keep items of important value to one hidden away from the peering eyes of others. many a treasure hoarder keeps precious stolen goods hidden away in chests, bound tightly behind lock and key. even hilichurls choose to bury their valuables deep into the earth, where the soil may keep their secrets away from the prying eye.
he is never one to remain to see the end results of these actions. at least, not in time’s past. the reason behind the construction of the wangshu inn is more than transparent to him, the yaksha caring not for the reasoning behind the construction. matters of mortals were none of his concern, after all. yet with his mainstays migrating to the top of the inn and the treetop of the gigantic tree entailed with the inn, there came the inevitable mingling with the mortals who called the inn their home.
it is there that he witnesses how mortals hide away their valuables, as he knows, yet also how freely mortals would share their valuables with one held precious to them.
he has a room there, complete with cupboards and drawers and spaces for storage that remain empty. everything crumbles before the test of time; everything he carries on his person and every person he carries in his memories reminds him of such a lesson.
all the same, he quietly longs for something precious to fill those cupboards and for someone precious to save it for.

the cleanest water would never free his skin from the red stained upon them. not even the sweetest scents could make him forget the sharp metallic scent of fresh blood.
sunlight was a nurturing source, brought young beings from deep sleep and enriched the earth into blooming forth from the veil of night. it was nothing that he deserved, he repeated to himself, over and over until it nearly became a truth.
thus when the triumphant figure of rex lapis, outlined by the rising sun, appeared before him, he was at a loss. was he allowed to gaze upon the geo archon? allowed to feel a hope that he believed had long been snuffed out begin to rise up in his heart of hearts? the sunlight he had so longed for was now reaching a hand out to him and his longing gave way to his own reach.
nowadays, he still operates beneath the cover of night, a familiar companion in the changing winds of the world. but he allows himself the brightness of the sun now, counts his blessings that the rays can warm his skin, and accepts the welcome burden of protecting that brilliance

there’s not many that xiao considers to be family and if asked, he would simply scoff and reply that adepti cannot be held to the same bonds as mortals do. that being said, he considers the other adepti a family of sorts. his former yaksha companions were also a found family and his family is beginning to include those who seek him out. he will deny all this however, of course lol
