oohh I have SO MUCH to say on this matter.

first off, I fully agree with this take. house targaryen signed their own death warrant by seeking power over the seven kingdoms. they doomed their culture, their freedoms, their magic, and their very dragons to an ignominous fate, all because of a prophecy that may or may not have come true without said annexation regardless.

the targaryens were the literal last dragonriders left alive after the doom - they were alone in their culture, their customs, their manner of dress, their religion, even their language. and when a community gets displaced like that, assimilation almost always carries the risk of losing all of the above.

and it started small.

visenya had to share the crown with her brother, even though valyrians practiced absolute primogeniture, where birth order carried weight, not sex. but she had to do it, because the andals and westerosis wouldn't agree to their rule otherwise.

they had to hide their religious practices behind closed doors, and visenya was later condemned for practicing blood magic - something that was very standard practice in their culture, and was actually key to them being bonded to dragons.

aegon, visenya and rhaenys had to essentially eschew their faith, upbringing and culture in public for appeasement, and even aegon's bigamy was frowned upon, even though it was, once again, very much standard in his culture.

the downward spiral continued with the succession crisis, with maegor being demonised not for his harsh ruling practices, but for his cultural and religious ones. he was called "mad" for his blood magic and his polygamy, which once again is just... their heritage.

but jaeherys was the one who truly sentenced them to death.

he sidelined alyssane and reduced her to consort, not an equal, and leaned further into the patriarchal practices of westeros, shaming - and even punishing - his daughters for sexual freedoms that were otherwise allowed in their culture. he made his sons heirs over their elder sisters, continuing to break their own familial tradition and valyrian laws.

their weddings were not conducted in valyrian religious customs and practices, and one could almost argue that it weakened the magic in their blood and their bonds with their dragons.

it is no surprise that daemon and rhaenyra, who practiced valyrian customs, married in a valyrian religious ceremony, spoke high valyrian as their mother tongue, had the strongest bonds with their dragons.

and that rhaenyra's death marked the end of the dragons.

i have more thoughts, but they are not coherent at the moment, so there may be another thinkpiece.

i hate dogs and dog owners so much omfg. i'm genuinely terrified of dogs, like my uncle has one of those tiny, cat sized dogs, and when he comes over and brings the dog with him, i'm not leaving my room until they leave, it's that serious. just now i was walking home from the store and there was this lady walking in front of me with a big ass dog that she had on one of those adjustable leashes and she was walking so much slower than me so i tried to walk around them on the grass but when i got in line with them the dog came towards me and stopped like two steps away from me. obvi i also stopped because there was no way i'm getting any closer to that dog, so i'm just standing there with literal tears in my eyes about to piss my pants because the dog kept staring at me and would not go away and what does the lady do?? instead of making the leash shorter to make the dog go back to her or wtv she just looks at me and goes "oh it's okay, it doesn't bite, it's really nice:))". like okay???? idc how nice it is, it's a dog. and also at that point the leash was like 2 meters long, taking it back half a meter for those two seconds while i passed wouldn't have killed either of them

I just think that Rocky is the most feral possessive bitch to ever exist when it comes to Grace. a hill i'm willing to die on is that ryan gosling put a spell on us through phm. like i don't read books written by men, almost ever, the last one i read was almost a decade ago, but project hail mary and the gray man did get put on my tbr simply because ryan gosling played the main characters in the movie adaptations. i'm pretty sure i'm gonna like phm but i don't think i'm gonna like tgm (i loved the movie but i've seen spoilers from the book and yikes) but i'm gonna read it anyway. also??? who's obsessed with ryan gosling?? like sure he's a great actor but he's such a weird person to be obsessed with?? ngl i might be saying this because i've never had a Favourite actor before but imagine someone asks you what you're into and you have to say ryan gosling... i don't like this. if anyone knows how to unwatch phm, please let me know!

Listening to Andy Weir talk about eridians is so funny because fans are always talking about Rocky and Adrian as these “soft” adorable aliens but Weir won’t ever let us forget that their species are apex predators on their planet. Not like humans who became apex predators by inventing weapons, but natural top of the foodchain like lions or polar bears. So far I haven’t found an interview where Weir explains who ate eridians in the ancient past that caused them to watch over each other while they slept; another predator species or rivaling eridians.

Grace is joking around with a selectively violent creature that can rip his soft squishy body apart in an instant!

But it’s also a lot of fun to hear Weir talk about all the stuff he wants to include in a possible sequel, like the fact that eridians can have several conversations at once even with the same eridian. He imagine Rocky and Adrian bickering in one conversation while having a nice conversation at the same time that slowly turns into a fight and all of a sudden they’re yelling at each other in two conversations about different things.

He also says they have terrible spacial memory because they can see everything around them all the time thanks to their echo location so to them it’s crazy that humans can only see in one direction but still remember what’s behind them and even what the last room they were in looks like. Apparently eridians mostly just remember that the room exists and that it has the computer in it but if you asked them where the computer is placed in the room they’ll struggle to give a precise answer.

And Rocky got scared when Grace hugged him because eridians don’t have a concept of expressing affection with physical touch. To them it’s only neutral or violent because thanks to their hard shell they can’t really feel much. They only use it to move each other around or to break through their prey’s shell to get to the soft insides. So in their inter-species friendship only Grace would feel any desire to touch Rocky. It makes it very cute that Rocky joins in on Grace’s hugging ritual. It’s purely for Grace’s sake.

enough time has passed for me to be able to admit this but until a few months ago, i had no idea what a fiddle was. so when everyone started talking about john the fiddler i thought he was a pervert. i couldn't explain why but i was convinced that "fiddler" was some kinda nickname he earned by getting handsy with people or by sleeping around or smth. it took me way too long to actually look up what a fiddler was and realise that daemon's alias wasn't john the pervert

what kills me about phm canon compliant coltland gentry is that they will never be able to properly mourn their brother. when ryland gets shot into space he's not dead yet, not for at least thirteen years, so they're stuck in this waiting period of both grieving, because they'll never see him again, but also not, because it just doesn't feel right to grieve a living person. then the thirteen years pass and it still doesn't feel right to mourn him because what if finding the solution takes a year? so they wait for the fourteenth year to pass, and still the what if remains. what if he's still alive up there? they don't know exactly how much food they had on the hail mary, for all they know they could've had enough to last for at least two years. so they wait again. years pass and just when they finally accept that he couldn't have survived this long and they can mourn his death, the beetles return. ryland's alive and coming home. after all this uncertainty finally they have something concrete. except the relief and the hope of seeing their brother again doesn't last long because ryland turned the ship around. once again they're plunged into uncertainty since they have no way of knowing if ryland actually reached rocky, if he could save him, if he succeeded and didn't die trying; and even if he survived, they don't know where he was going from there.

one thing from the phm book that didn't quite make it into the movie, quite understandably so but saddens me nonetheless, is just how much ryland was attached to ilyukhina. they became friends on stratt's vat, although it wasn't explicitly shown through the flashbacks. when he sees rocky's ship the first thing he thinks about is how ilyukhina would be jumping around and cheering about it. he constantly refers to how she had this bright smile and could make anyone crack a laugh with her jokes. even yao. when ryland first meets rocky and needs to go to sleep because he's been awake for two days, he immediately thinks about how ilyukhina would have powered through and stayed hours and hours and hours with him without needing to sleep because of how ecstatic she would have been. while he doesn't mention yao as much, ilyukhina is a constant. he remembers her as this smiling, wild beam of light. they were close. they were friends. and he has to deal with the fact that when he gave discovered her body and gave her this joke of a burial, he couldn't even remember the smile he loved so much.
