just backing up my big timeline from my too-big card
⤷ 6th OCTOBER, 1986: xiulan amanda lang is born in metropolis, her parents' first and only child.
⤷ 7th OCTOBER, 1989: a freak meteor shower devastates smallville (central kansas). xiulan’s parents — visiting her mother’s hometown — are killed. a photo of her in the immediate aftermath (wearing her ‘fairy princess’ halloween costume) goes viral and ends up on the cover of time magazine. they call her "little miss meteor".
⤷ she's adopted by her aunt, nell potter, and grows up [next to the kent farm] in smallville. this is where she comes to be referred to as lana (which she comes to embrace, but, like, you can imagine why that happened).
⤷ lana is very much one of those kids who's a "pleasure to have in class" by virtue of 1. never speaking, and 2. excelling academically without requiring extra effort from her teachers. by virtue of those same attributes, she also rarely has friends who aren't horses. in third grade, one exception — emily — drowns in the river while trying to save her life. dealing with that... does not help her socially.
⤷ neither does 1. the fact that she's one of just a handful of non-white kids in smallville, and children are often terrible, 2. the fact that her stepford-wannabe aunt lowkey hates everyone and is not subtle about it, 3. the fact that lana spends a large portion of her time hanging out (sometimes CAMPING out) in the cemetery.
⤷ with the help of lex luthor, lana saves her aunt’s flower shop (which is where her parents met, back when the building was a movie theater). she turns it into a coffee shop — called THE TALON after the original haunt — and manages it pretty much all on her own. when nell gets married and moves away, lana (16) is legally emancipated.
⤷ more teen trivia: she is a cheerleader for about one (1) month as a high school freshman (to try to feel closer to her mother). it is, predictably, awful. she then runs cross country until her femur is crushed junior year (horse) (also awful). she has a brief fling with a prestigious french art school (before getting homesick). on and off, she dates her childhood friend, clark kent. she attends met u for almost a year (astronomy major).
⤷ when lana is nineteen, she gets involved with her friend / business partner / landlord, lex luthor. it is an unholy mess. right before her twentieth birthday, a guy inhabiting his body (yes, really) impales her dominant hand. right after her birthday, she gets pregnant.⤷ there is a shotgun wedding in february and tl;dr enter lana's bluebeard's bride arc. i do not call it that lightly.
⤷ ultimately, though, it is actually her father-in-law who has a hit taken out on her (for trying to reclaim some of her autonomy from the family) (naturally ♡). she survives, but her son does not. this is in may.⤷ shortly after that, she finds out that lex has successfully cloned her, which sends lana well and truly off the deep end (the, like, inch she needed to be pushed). she uses one of said clones to fake her death and incidentally invents the gone girl genre.⤷ she comes home two months later, after doing some objectively hilarious blackmail. some (even funnier) bad things happen to lionel luthor, who dies not long afterward, but i'm sure that's not my business.
⤷ with her divorce money, she starts QILIN, a non-profit foundation that [gestures vaguely] provides support to metahumans / mutants / whatever you prefer to call them. it's based out of metropolis, but eventually has branches in other cities. thwarting lcorp is her passion.⤷ she helps whatever hot journalist i am pandering to write a truly damning exposé on lex / The Human Rights Atrocities, and he goes to prison for a decade.⤷ she also buys back her childhood home and makes it into her own (hint: there's a small stable and a small greenhouse). two things she'll never do again: 1. change her name and 2. move (permanently, at least).⤷ [agonizing two months in a brainiac-induced non-coma]⤷ a three-year period of travel, intensive training, and vigilantism (ft. a power non-suit that makes her invulnerable, for a while) ends this bit.
⤷ lana comes home to smallville for good (25). there is an unholy amount of college that finally goes on, which she can actually afford now. she rescues some animals and starts fostering kids (mainly powered, mainly unable to be placed elsewhere). she begins healing in earnest / re-learning the mortifying ordeal of being known™.
⤷ mainly comics-specific, but not flexible (she will still end up with an engineering degree in her main verse): lana starts collaborating with STEELWORKS, primarily on tech for the justice league. sometimes she will do the superwoman thing with her own suit, but only as needed (it's very much a duty and not a calling).⤷ she still owns the talon and "rents" the apartment to the managers (you guessed it: for free), but lana's main hands-on contribution is that she's still hosting her damned silent film 'festivals'. if i were guessing, though, i would say the team's inherited an overprotective big sister. it is hard to stay away. that place is her little baby.
