I'll never understand

I mean I get they have a lot of energy but I cringe everytime I hear them screeching. Can’t wait to have my own just to say the words “inside voice please”. It’ll bring me so much joy.

That is very true, thank god they aren't. A child's cry in result of pain is the worst, it makes your heart shatter into a million pieces. [sighs as she raised her coffee to her lips taking a sip.]

My tv is on the fritz and apparently none of my interns are screwing up enough for me to be needed for any kind of assistance. Even paperwork would sound fun right now. Except I already got up to date with it all.

Jackson raised his eyebrows as he looked across at April, and couldn’t help the smile that crept across his face. The redhead was probably the most reliable and caring person he’d met, incredibly selfless, and that was one of the many things that Jackson admired about her. She didn’t have to be there, but because she had the time she was willing to give it up. Honestly, that was incredible, and Jackson was grateful. Having her help meant a lot, since it would definitely shorten the work. The patient finally calmed down - thankfully the medication had kicked in - because this was going to be an incredibly painful experience for him otherwise. The glass, the burns, there was so much to do and so much cleaning up to do before he could even think about skin grafts or contacting Mark regarding helping out this patient. “Thank you.” He smiled an nodded her way. “Yeah. I would, so I’m thankful you’re volunteering to help. Besides I trust you to do this smoothly. Unlike the interns.” He gave her a small grin. He listened as she explained the patients history. he was incredibly lucky that he’d gotten out of there - honestly his wounds were bad, but they weren’t unsalvageable. They could be cleaned up and things could certainly get better. “That’s incredible.” He shook his head, his eyes widening. Jackson grabbed the kit from the intern, and nodded, following April out. “Whoa. This guy, that’s so lucky, so so lucky.”

At the same time Jackson spoke April raised her brow. Her eyes shifted over towards him before she turned her head to look at him, a smile quickly composing her lips "He is". Somehow without even trying he always distracted her, and ofcourse she didn't know why or what it was. Sometimes she would catch herself but other times it took her longer than it should've. Clearing her throat her eyes pulled away from Jackson's and she handed the scans back to the intern, "put these with his chart, please?". She followed the intern out and to the nurses station proceeding to take everything out of her pockets and setting it behind the counter out of harm's way. Throwing her hair up into a bun she headed towards the sink to scub her hands. It always took April longer than it should for her to just wash her hands, especially since she always over thought every one of her patient's situations, coming up with every possible out-comes in her head. That was just how she was, with everything not just her work. It won't took her a couple minutes to scub her hands clean before rinsing them off quickly, she grabbed a disposable towel wiping them dry before throwing the towel away. Reaching above the sink she pulled a couple gloves out of the box putting them on her own hands before she made her way back to the patient. "What can I do?" She moved to the opposite side of the table as she looked up at Jackson waiting for him to tell her what he needed help with.

No more surgery || Lexie and April.

It had been a long morning... back to back patients that April was either standing in on or just checking up on. The pit was unusually slow but she didn't mind seems so there so many patients that were actually admitted. Although there was this one patient who refused any type of treatment, this person had their whole life ahead of them and basically in simple terms they just were here to die. April never knew why this bugged her, she had far too many patients that wanted to do this and she had no other choice but to abide by their wishes and make them as comfortable as possible. Most of the morning her mind was only on this patient, trying to think of ways she could make her more comfortable or maybe even find a approach that the patient felt comfortable with... but nothing came to her. Surgery was what was going to save this womans life and she wanted no part of it. To keep herself busy she went around making sure all of the other patient's she was seeing were all up on their medication, and going around to check if everyone was comfortable or if they needed anything. She had a few bites to her offer, sending her on a wild goose chase to scrounge up a few extra pillows and blankets. It didn't take long for her to notice that the patient she had been so worried about before hand had a visitor, a little girl maybe 7 or 8 years of age curled up in the chair next to her mothers bed. It only took a moment of her standing outside the window of the patient's room to send her into the nurses station looking for children's books/dvds. Taking them into the child she explained who she was, and where she would be if she needed anything. She also told the little girl that if she needed help working the dvd player that was built into the tv to go ahead and ask a nurse. Her eyes drifted up towards the TV catching the clock as she did so sighing at the fact it was already way past her lunch. "Dr. Kepner, ok? That is who you ask for and I will be here within the blink of an eye", She spoke as she backed out of the room on her way to the cafeteria in hopes that she could still get something to eat. It only took a few seconds for her to get through the line, and to her surprise there were more people than she expected. Spotting Lexie, she smiled her way before making her way to the table and sitting down across from her with her hands still on her tray. "Listen to this... I have a patient. She is 32, and has already beat colon cancer more times than I could. 6 months ago she had a check up just to make sure nothing was spotted, and nothing was. But she was feeling sick, and started hemorrhaging. SO, she comes to the ER.. I run a couple tests only to find a I'm guessing benign, only because her blood tests were clean.. growth that is basically eating through her colon. Her response? "No more surgery". I have all the tools, and knowledge infront of me to help save this womans life and she wants nothing to do with it" April took a bite of her apple slice sitting back in the chair as she still looked at Lexi. "And the worst part? Her daughter is sitting there watching her die".

Jackson was on call purely because Sloan had wanted a night off and had volunteered his protege for the task. Thus far he’d been called to the ER mainly by interns who couldn’t seem to handle the simplest of stitches, and he was finding himself getting more and more frustrated by the second as he never seemed to be able to catch a break. Jackson finished up the sutures on the woman in front of him, giving her the standard information - return in a couple of days to have the stitches removed, and he took the intern aside as he left the trauma bay. “I’m going to sleep now, I’ve been on shift for 18 hours. Only wake me if it’s an emergency - a genuine 911 emergency, not for sutures, you can handle sutures, okay?” He raised his eyebrows and the intern acknowledged that they could in fact handle the stitches. Jackson left the trauma bay, and immediately headed for the nearest on call room, where he collapsed onto the bed exhaustion over taking him. He had no idea how long it was, but his pager was beeping incredibly loudly, a 911 page. Jackson jumped up, and ran to the ER, speed was necessary with all 911 pages. He found where the page had been coming from and was greeted by the sight and smell of burns all over the patient who didn’t seem to be calming down. Jackson immediately placed on the gloves, and joined April beginning to inspect the wounds. “Just breathe slowly, and calm down, this is going to be painful, but you can handle it.” Jackson said to the guy on the table. “What happened?” He asked April, his eyes almost wide at what he was seeing. Jackson caught a nurse, and immediately asked for a debridement kit. “This is going to be a very, very long and painful night for him.” Jackson murmured to April. “Might be difficult to watch.”

Feeling a hand wrap around her forearm April looked down at the sight of the mans slightly burnt flesh. She could feel the glass that stuck out of his skin on her own arm making her move her it not watching to damage any nerves. It only took a moment for her to grab ahold of his hand lightly as her eyes glanced over towards the patient, stunned that he was actually calming down. April shook her head towards Jackson hearing his words, "It's okay, I don't have anywhere else to be" her eyes shifted up to Jackson's with a reassuring look on her face. "I can help..." She added while she felt the patient's hand go limp, a sign that the medication was finally kicking him making him fall unconscious. "There is so much glass, you'd be here all night" Her voice was hushed, knowing that there were patient's all around them that were sleeping... or atleast trying to. She felt for her patient, she really did but she also knew it could be alot worse. And it very well could be all after the fact he wouldn't calm down until the medication finally kicked in. "Accident.. he flipped his car. People were saying they got him out, and managed to put the flames out seconds before it was going to blow. I don't know how true it is, but..." She finally answered his question seems so the patient had fallen unconscious. Her eyes were quickly pulled away from Jackson's as she felt the woosh of wind from the intern rushing back with the debridement kit, along with everything that was needed to flush the wounds. Another intern came to her side putting the scans they had ran on the patient before April even got to the hospital. "Maybe we should move him to a more private area.." She glanced up at Jackson before removing her hands from the patient and slipping out of the curtain ripping her gloves off her hands all at the same time. Taking the scans from the interns hands she held them up to the light staring at them in shock, "Okay, thank you.. good job." her head bobbed towards the intern before she pushed back through the curtains. "All he has are two broken ribs, and a broken ankle" She held the scans back up to the lights shaking her head in disbelief, "Lucky, orrr lucky?" her hand flashed the scans towards Jackson so he could see without taking his gloves off.

On call || Jackson and April.

April hadn't been home long from her shift before she ended up passing out sprawled out on her couch. She was a light sleeper to begin with but when she was on call she never slept well in fear she wouldn't hear if she was being paged. It seemed as if she was only asleep for five minutes when the loud buzzing on her wooden coffee table woke her sending her into a panic making her body shoot up off the couch, "I'M UP I'M UP". Her hand rested on her chest over her heart as her breathing was heavy. Licking her lips she reached for her pager at the same time her eyes shifted for the clock sighing at the realization that she was infact out for 6 hours. She blinked a few times until she was able to read the tiny screen that sat in her hand. 911 pages were honestly the worst, especially in trauma because you just never knew what you were going to walk into. It was a hope for the best, prepare for the worst type of situation which she was all to familiar with. Kicking into surgeon mode April quickly sprung from the couch, and was in her car within a matter of seconds. It only took 15 minutes give or take to get from her apartment to the hospital, but seeing as this was the middle of the night the time was cut in half. Thankfully because the moment the souls of her shoes hit the pavement she could hear the screams coming from the sliding doors of the ER. She knew ofcourse that this was her patient, this was who she was treating. Instinct kicked in sending her running into the hospital being met by an intern shoving the patient's chart into her hands, "Male, 52. Fell asleep at the wheel flipping his car. He was pulled just in time but the flames got to him, glass is in just about every inch of his body".. The girls words rung in her ears while April's eyes stayed glued to the chart only to look up to watch where she was going. "Burns and lacerations to the face, torso, arms, and legs", the words made her body go cold as her pace picked up until she reached the gurney. Her eyes glanced down towards chart as her hand reached for the curtain. "Pain medication administered" Her head tilted slightly at the sound of the patients screams causing her to rip back the curtain that surrounded the bed. The damage that was done to the man's body stunned her for a moment making her breathing pick up as she rushed to the nurses aid whom tried to calm the man. April's eyes shot up towards the intern that was on the opposite side of the bed trying to help the man without hurting him anymore than he already was, "Page Dr. Avery 911.. NOW" Her attention soon was back on her patient at the same time trying to check the amount of medication he was already given, and to her surprise he was already maxed out. Quickly putting on a pair of gloves she started to inspect the man's wounds, "Sir, I know it hurts.. okay I know. But you need to calm down in order for me to help you. The pain medication will kick in the sooner you calm down".
