A Guide to Smoke-Free Cleansing
When I found out that my beloved cat has asthma there were so many thoughts racing through my head. My biggest concern was my use of smoke cleansing. Did I somehow cause this? Is it safe to smoke cleanse around her? If not what can I do now? If yourself or a family member has an adversity to smoke you may be asking yourself these same questions. My vet advised me against smoke cleansing around her, so I set out on a search to find alternatives. If you are in this position yourself, the good news is that there are so many great smoke-free cleansing alternatives out there from candles to sprays!
Cleansing rituals have been used throughout history by many cultures to eliminate unwanted energies from people, places, and things. There are different variations of it in different traditions, but it is typically preformed by burning sage or incense. Some witches believe that you should cleanse your space, tools, and self before practicing witchcraft so that negative energies donât creep into your intentions. After some research I learned that excessive smoke inhalation isnât healthy for yourself or your pets. I started thinking about what it really means to cleanse. There is more to it than just burning sage. If you use sage or incense you should do so in moderation. You may want to incorporate other methods into your cleansing rituals.
Do you start to feel bad vibes lingering when your home gets messy? Cleansing your space can be as simple as cleaning up. Some people do this as a preparation for smoke cleansing. I find it works really well on its own. Clean, declutter, organize. Take out the garbage. Sweep and vacuum. Do your laundry. Wash the dishes. Fold the clothes piled up on âthe chairâ. You will feel such a positive release by the end of it. As for specific objects like your tools, washing them can do the trick.
Washing or soaking something in water is an easy way to remove unwanted energies from it. You can use salt water, moon water, or just plain tap water. Be careful not to use this method on anything that is not water safe. Especially softer crystals which can break or even dissolve in water.
The moon and sunâs rays have powerful energies that you can harness to not only cleanse but charge objects. Taking the moon phases and seasons into account can result in different energies charged into your objects. This works well for certain crystals that cannot be cleansed with water.
Combine the power or water, herbs, and crystals into a relaxing bath to cleanse the self. Create your own bath teas, potions, oils, and salts or buy them online. Shops like Witchy Washy Bath and Witch Baby Soap specialize in bath products designed for specific intentions.
Sprays are a great way to cleanse your home without smoke. They are fairly simple to make yourself or you can buy them online. Typically they are made with a blend of essential oils, water, and a carrier such as vinegar or witch hazel. Optionally they can also include dried herbs and crystals. Common cleansing sprays include; moon water, sage, palo santo, lavender, cedar, and more! Use them the same way you would sage bundles or incense.
If you like the smell of incense you donât have to give it up completely. Turns out incense and scented candles are made with the same main ingredient: essential oils. I found a bunch of incense inspired candles on Etsy (my absolute go-to for all things witchy). If youâre not big on candle magick you can also use essential oil diffusers.
There is so much more to cleansing than just burning sage. Try out some of these methods for a healthier smoke-free alternative. Who knows, you might find that you like one of these more than smoke cleansing.Â
