An interesting note for folk not familiar with free-flight bird work - that wire coming off of the birb is a telemetry device. They’re a way to track birds that don’t come back or get blown off course - it’s basically a tiny battery pack and an antenna that transmits. This one is attached to a little neck harness (other locations can include a leg or back harness) which helps prevent it from hitting things like branches and electrical wires while the bird is flying. It’s pretty inert and doesn’t bother the birds, although falconers go to great lengths to make sure that the material of the strap will break off if it gets caught on things so as not to hurt the bird.
