a lovely nonnie requested some prompts that a hero might say to a villain who’s either becoming or showing the potential to become a good person, and additionally things that a villain might say to a hero who’s either becoming or showing the potential to become a villain! spicy stuff, nonnie! i hope these are close to what you were looking for!

“ what is this? mid-life crisis? personal stuff? mind control? it sure as hell isn’t you, that’s for sure. “

“ i can’t be a bad guy with no hero to stop me, bud. that’s your job. remember? “

“ what the hell’s the matter with you!? “

“ you realize i just saved a civilian… from you? “

“ is this some weird, murderous reverse psychology trick to make me the hero? “

“ okay, this was cute at first, but enough’s enough. i’m the bad guy. you’re the goodie two shoes. got it? “

“ so, the mayor just called me - ME! - to ask me to stop you. just… let’s just take a minute to process that… “

“ get a grip, pal. seriously. you don’t even LOOK evil! “

“ i have to stop you before you start stealing candy from babies. “

“ as your arch nemesis, i feel it’s only right to worry when you start doing my job for me. “

“ doesn’t this go against your strong and boring moral code? “

“ you need therapy. i say this because you’re actually making all the folks in my villain club look like teddy bears. “

“ hey! use your words, buddy, not your fists! “

“ who’s messing with your head? you wear the cape and sign autographs one minute, the next you’re blowing up buildings? what gives?! “

“ stop! find your own city to terrorise! “

Ivan desperately avoided eye contact and forced any hint of a sneer behind a perfectly friendly smile.

"You know people used to get their eyes torn out for staring at someone so far above their status."

“I’ll keep standing, thank you.” Why does all this strange stuff happen to him and it seems, only him.

“You have yet to tell me why you’re here and what you want,” he pointed out, holding his hands out in a manner to imply he’s about to reach the end of his rope

“I was attracted here by what you are and represent.”

He said it as if it was common knowledge, simple, and easy to come to one’s own conclusion for it. Pointedly, he took his time to lick a long drip of juice from his wrist to his fingers before continuing.

“I would like your name, please. I’ve answered two of your questions and you haven’t answered mine. Tis only fair.”

This new guy is clearly far too weird to be dealing with but Ludwig is honestly too bewildered to react more aggressively. “Ivan- What do you want?” he demands again. “This is my house, you are intruding into my space, without an invitation”

The statement made him chuckle with a slow shake of his head, much like how a parent would laugh at their child’s joke.

“I am no vampire. I’m a much different creature, but I suppose the two could get confused if you did not have eyes.” He bit into the last bit of food, the apple, straight to the core. He hated empty calories and yet he simply couldn’t help himself. Food tasted fantastic after all.

“I may enter when I want, where I want, and who I want.” There was a pause as he inspected the bite of his apple and swallowed the rest of it in his mouth, “I meant enter the home of but you get the gist, yes?  Of course you do. You seem smart just shocked.” 

Ivan gestures to the other chair across from him, “I want you to sit with me.”

She sipped her wine and watched him mull it over. As he thought, she also took the opportunity to take in the details of his appearance, and whatever it might tell her about him. As a demon, he could probably change his appearance at will. For all she knew, the suit he wore wasn’t any more tangible than the air they breathed. But if he had chosen to look this way on his own, there was likely some reason behind it. 

Did demons have to iron their demon suits, she suddenly wondered to herself. Before she could get drawn into that thought tangent, he spoke again. She smiled at his answer. “You are very close. Practically standing on it, in more ways than one.”

His smile relaxed around the edges, seemingly pleased with himself. Hell rarely challenged his mind nowadays. It would certainly explain the crossword puzzle booklet that sparked his interest the moment he came across it. 

“You are a nation then. Fair enough.” 

He concluded behind the rim of his glass, easily finishing off find drink as if it was little more than a sip of water. A part of him wanted to chew the glass itself, but he got the feeling the talk would turn sour if he did. Instead, he gestured the glass toward her.

“Now what is your question.”

She could see him thinking. It was strange to think a demon of all things would not have this much knowledge. Perhaps hell and its inhabitants were not so powerful as they made themselves out to be.

“Our kind can die permanently, yes, but it doesn’t happen as much as with humans. As for what happens after, well, none of us really know. I suppose based on what you’ve said, then perhaps we don’t go to hell? Or perhaps those who have passed were somehow, against all odds, decent enough to go to heaven, if that’s real.” 

She stood up then and went into her kitchen. As she pulled out two glasses and a bottle of wine, she kept talking. “Our kind makes the news now and then, but we aren’t exactly celebrities. You might say we’re on the same level as, ah, elected officials or civil servants, perhaps. We are known about. We’re public figures to an extent, but not in the spotlight.” She poured out the wine and walked back with the glasses, handing one to him. “Now surely, you can piece it out a little from there. I’ve given you clues.” She sipped her wine and sat back down. “Consider the comparisons I made.” 

He takes this all in, nodding eventually, when it was time for him to make his own conclusions. Known of without sticking out. Huamns were curious creatures but certainly very set in their ways. If enough of them believed that these government officials were more than human then... well it would be a bit chaotic, Ivan likes to think. Rioting was always something fun to watch whenever he had the time to check in on the human race.

Wars even more so, but that kept everyone busy, with the rush of new souls in circulation. Souls were always nice, but he had a preferred method of feeding. At the thought, a flash of hungry clouded his eyes but it was gone the moment the wine was sat in front of him. He watches her closely, his smile widening in ‘thanks’. He took a deliberate slow drink of the wine, visibly enjoying it.

“You represent the place in which you live, yes? You may not be the government, but you do considered yourself tied to it somehow.” Ivan hums, “Maybe even tied completely to the people alone? Maybe many things. Am I close?”

“You people?” Did he mean nations? He better not mean nations and that’s his venison loin, he was going to use that.

“Who are you, what do you want, why are you here?”

Instead of answering, he finished off whatever meat (definitely venison loin), and lick the juice off his fingers before finally turning to give the man his full attention.

“I rather like the back and forth questioning. I need a bit of information. I will be as honest as I can be, which is fairly honest, so lucky you.”

He smiles with a closed mouth, humming as he takes a seat at the kitchen table. The only thing left in his arms is another apple and a small bit of cheese wrapped in plastic that he has already took a visible bite of, plastic and all.

“Come, sit, discuss. My name is Ivan. Who are you?”

Not this shit again. “Wonderful. You can go to any restaurant that’s open and serves waffles, and ask for some.”

“That is very nice, but I have found myself in the company of yet another person whose clock does not tick.”

He takes another bite out of whatever wrapped food is in his arms. He doesn’t bother unwrapping the raw meat as he chews it paper and all.

“I find you people to be far more interesting as of late. If you do not wish to discuss waffles or waffle irons, I do have another range of questions.”

She shrugged her shoulders. “I knew a guy once.” But that was all she was going to say on that subject for now. Her dear friend, wherever he might be, was his own business, and not a subject to talk about with whoever this stranger was. 

She pressed her lips in thought. She could sense if someone was lying, usually. But she wasn’t sure how well that sense worked on the supernatural beings. Especially if they were the type who were meant to lie as a job. She decided to act as though she believed him for now, to keep him placated as she figured him out.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a half being, but the idea of being something ‘in between’ might be fitting. I am not hiding either. My kind is not unknown to the humans. We are a normal part of every day life, as much as grocery stores and government buildings. And yes, I assure you, I know exactly what I am.” She leaned forward a little, grinning. “You’ll have to think a little abstractly. I am surprised you have no idea though. I’m not the only one of my kind. You surely must have met at least one or two during some century past.”

Ivan seems to take her words in to deep consideration, his only tell being a slight tilt of his head. There’s a low hum as he thinks back on the very short month he’s been roaming about before he noticed her. He has read many newsletters, articles, magazines that he could get his hands on. The internet was still a fascinating mystery to him, but he was certainly amused at the idea at some point back in Hell something similar had been invented.

“Unless... your kind is capable of dying and my kind can interact with what remains... I do not see a way for me to have known. In my eyes... You look strange, intriguing. Souls have time limits on them when in a mortal’s body. Yet yours is stuck. I can see the second hand ticking just to tick back again and again and again... Something is keeping you alive, keeping you from aging, and I’m sure that is not all.”

His smile relaxed as he leaned back into the chair, his hands knitting together to sit comfortably on his chest.

“Even grocery stores and government buildings make news. I haven’t read anything of beings like yourself just yet. What do you call yourself?”

The man doesn’t look up his spot in front of the fridge, but he does close it after a moment more of mumbling to himself. He takes a large bite out of an apple.

“You might be able to, hi.” His head lulls to the side lazily to look at Ludwig.

“My name is Ivan, you may call me that. How do you work a waffle iron? I do not have one in my home just yet, but I’ve heard some things about waffles. I am very hungry.”

He finishes off the apple, stem and core and all.

She considered his gesture for a moment. Sitting was more vulnerable, but there would be a table in between. Standing was aggressive and, worse, could make her appear unsure, even fearful, which was the last thing she wanted. Everything now was about appearing calm and certain of herself, as though she were in control of it all. 

She walked past him to the chair, very sneakily taking in a deep breath through her nose when she was nearest to him. He didn’t smell like he must have been from the pits of hell. No brimstone or sulfur fumes. He did smell a bit like something burnt though, albeit in a pleasant manner. And underneath that was something earthy and pleasant, like dried flowers and mint. 

Her arms remained folded as she sat down and crossed one leg over the other. Her eyebrow was raised. “So you haven’t been ‘up here’ for nearly two centuries? So you’re something that is either immortal or very long lived, and you come from underground? You’re a demon, aren’t you? You may as well be honest, if that’s something you can do.” She shrugged at his question. “I’m not human. But I’m not not-human either.” Her frown broke for the first time as a little smirk played on her lips. She liked the idea of teasing him with a puzzle, to see what he was like.  

Patience may be a virtue, but its a tool that all creatures can benefit from. Many of his own brethren tend to lean heavily on the ‘cast a line, and wait’ approach. It works without fail. However, the satisfaction of not having to wait very long at all still tops any amount of waiting, Ivan thinks, as Dr. Beilschmidt takes her seat.

“How very observant of you. I see you have met a coworker awhile back, yes?” A rhetorical question.

“I can be as honest as the situation allows me to be. Right now, I’m very open.” With how his face doesn’t even twitch away from his smile or the lack of stress radiating from, anyone would be hard pressed to tell if he was lying or not.

The man’s eyes held a curious sparkle at the confession, “Something in between then? Most half beings tend to have long gone into hiding from humans, yet you live among them like you are one. How interesting to choose to hide in plain sight... unless that’s not the full truth... Do you know what you even are?”

She didn’t like the fact that this…man(?) was so relaxed. That meant one of two things. Either he was an incredibly delusional man who had, against all odds, slipped into her home undetected, or he was a non-human being. Ironically, the latter was the more likely explanation, and that agitated her. It meant that her threats may very well be useless here. 

She could sense that something was different about him. Her suspicions were confirmed when his eyes changed color. Her head tilted up slightly as she stared into his eyes. He had stirred up an old memory in her mind of someone she’d known years ago. If she was right, then she knew exactly what sort of being he was.

She resisted the temptation to reach for a knife, and instead walked past the block until she was about a foot away from him. She was unarmed in front of him now (although one should know that “unarmed” was not the same as being “helpless” in her case). She folded her arms tightly. “You may refer to me as Dr. Beilschmidt for now, as we are hardly familiar with each other yet. Surely a thing like you couldn’t be here for my services, and yet you seem to be so interested in them. What is this about then?”

His smile only grew with the confidence Dr. Beilschmidt exhibited. 

“Dr. Beilschmidt.” He said it with such a final tone, as if it was the end of some sort of mutual agreement that only he knew of. Maybe it was. Either way, his smile relaxed considerably.

“Well,” He started, “I’m at the point in my career that I simply have no more interest in climbing the corporate ladder. Which leaves me much time on my hands.” Ivan gestured to the chair across the table of him in an invitation to sit and chat.

“I haven’t been up here in quite sometime.” He paused for a moment, flicking his eyes upwards before settling back on Dr. Beilschmidt’s, “You didn’t have planes. That was quite the shock. You didn’t have trains. And I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting people like you either. I’m assuming... you’re human, you look human. You don’t smell like a human which is very interesting. That’s new for me. I want to learn more about you. Like friends tend to do.”

Ivan was quite aware of the entrance he made, subtle but far too disturbing of the natural habitat of the young woman in front of him. His smile is relaxed, posture even more so, as if he’s quite comfortable where he is, as if this was some pleasant new cafe that just opened up down the road. The man didn’t make a single move, specially when she drew closer with barely contained murderous intent.

He hummed, “I have many nerves, Miss. Plenty of brain cells that have lasted eons. Don’t let my handsome features fool you, I’m quite old and knowledgeable. Capable of doing many many great things. Awful things. Just as you are.”

“And I know we can become friends very easily. Simple really. It has been quite some time since many of my kind of people have checked up on the lay of the land.” Briefly, in the span of a blink, the man’s eyes changed from a surreal purple to pure black with burning purple irises before changing back. Another approving hum as he nods.

“And lucky me to have seen a person like you, capable of the things I enjoy so much! It is not a super rare occurrence, but usually I have to look a lot harder. May I have the pleasure of having your name?”
