Tell me about the girl
my mother was,
before she traded in
all her girl
to be my mother.
What did she smell like?
How many friends did she have,
before she had no room?
Before I took up so much
space in her prayers,
who did she pray for?
speak to me of my mother, who was she - jasmine mans

"Rhéaume" by Richard Harrison, 1994.
Manon Rhéaume is the first woman to have played in the National Hockey League. In 1992, she signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning and played in two pre-season games: one against the St. Louis Blues and one against the Boston Bruins.
Hearing the US men's olympic hockey team laugh at the expense of the women's team made my heart fall. It made me revisit this poem.
When I posted this hockey edit, I trimmed down the original poem so that it would fit well and flow nicely with the four images I selected.
Here is the poem in its entirety:
To forget in the motion of the save that we do not forget she is always a woman and sex is everything. To be a woman and have it be her play that counts. For men to be better than they are.
Wise words from Dr. Lexi Lafleur Brown
and also with Hughes boys laughing at Trumps misogynistic joke, is gross on so many levels, they were laughing at the team they have friends on, a team they have praised multiple times and laughing at their mum and all the work she put in. They cared and worried more about impressing a pedo than their mum. Their mum was a standout on the US womenâs team but never got to be an olympian because they didnât HAVE a womenâs Olympic hockey team. She missed out. Her sons got to live out her dream and then laughed at it.
I donât mean this in a way meant to be disrespectful to what she has accomplished because obviously being one of the first to compete in an iihf sanctioned womenâs hockey competition is extremely significant, but I do feel like a lot of the emphasis that online hockey fandom Ellen Weinberg-Hughes was very strange and pretty obviously just related to her family / personal life and ability to connect it to a man. she went multiple decades not really having any involvement in womenâs hockey, which I donât mean in a way to use âagainstâ her - she had some significant injuries and played at a time where there was 0 support or an ounce of professionalization, but to say that thereâs been just way more women in the last few decades to have a much bigger impact than her yet sheâs mentioned more for obvious reasons. I guess itâs in the same way that people suggest Jessica Campbell for every womenâs team coaching job ever - I love Jessica Campbell a lot and she would be qualified for a lot of positions, but the reason people are mentioning her is really less about her and more because sheâs the One Woman they know, rather than really evaluating if this situation makes sense or bringing up other possible candidates. At some point you have to start talking about women who have no connection to men you are a fan of at all and understanding womenâs hockey as its own unique thing separate from men

grieving, grieving, constantly grieving. I mourn what could have been, what will not be, what I can't save.
Which Christmas song lyric best describes your team this year?
It's the hap-happiest season of all
You better watch out, you better not cry
I'll be so blue thinking about you
Holy infant so tender and mild
The three words that best describe you are as follows: stink, stank, stunk
What a bright time, it's the right time to rock the night away
The stars are brightly shining
Santa buddy, fill my stockings with Canucks tix, for kicks
