I’ll Drive, I’ll Drive All Night

Focus pairing: Billy Maximoff/Nicholas Scratch

Summary: Nicky drinks too much at a party. Billy drives him home while trying to convince him to stay over. They have their usual song and dance.

Billy knew the party was a bad idea. He really hadn’t wanted to go but he wanted Nicky to go by himself even less. Nicky’s been…bad lately. Billy isn’t sure what happened, if something changed to make him drop so far.

You’re spiralin’ again

Whatever the reason, Nicky’s been taking it out on himself and those around him. Billy’s weathering the storm until he knows how to help. Tonight, helping means getting Nicky home safe. Home. To his empty house and emotionless parents. He wants to take Nicky to his own home, where the lights are warm and the food hot, but he isn’t sure how Nicky would react with how touchy he’s been lately. At least Nicky’s still going out. The way he was when he isolated himself still haunts Billy. 

Billy glances sideways at Nicky as he drives him home. He looks like shit. He’s slumped against the car door, his sweaty forehead pressed against the window. Billy can see his dark reflection in the window. His grip on the wheel tightens. He wishes he could do more.

“Why do you do this to yourself?” he asks.

Nicky laughs humourlessly. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“You’re hurting yourself.”

“Who cares?”

“I do.”

The tenseness returns to Nicky’s shoulders like it does every time Billy is so nakedly honest about his feelings.

Cat Genes

Character gets turned into a cat trope.

Focus pairing: Mel/Valentina

Summary: A simple errand turns into one of Mel’s weirder days.

“Mel, go and check Project Fission.”

A mysterious name for an alien rock-tech found by one of Valentina’s scavenger ops. The scientists assigned to it said they would have answers by, Mel checks her tablet, yesterday and there’s yet to be a report made.

“Don’t forget to respond to Counsellor Jones. She’s expecting an email before noon,” Mel says.

Valentina waves her off. Mel makes her way down to the designated laboratory. She mentally goes over the rest of the day, making a few adjustments on her tablet as she does and opening a few alerts. Some Val will need to know, some aren’t worth her attention.

Mel slows to a stop before she reaches the right door. Something’s off. She looks up. The hall is empty. She frowns and looks through the windows of the laboratory. It’s also empty. This isn’t meant to be an empty floor. She checks the panel beside the door and then her tablet. No warnings or notes. She walks into the empty laboratory. The alien rock she’s been sent to get a report on sits by itself on a table.

Red lights blare and the doors slide shut with a hiss. Cloudy gas billows from the rock. Mel panics and runs to the door. The keypad is dark and there’s no way she’ll be able to pry the door open. She bangs on the glass and yells for help. No one hears her.

Botched Spell

I chose amnesia for my day 8 prompts for @agathaallalongweek

Focus Pairing: Billy Maximoff & Agatha Harkness & Jen Kale

Summary: Messing up a spell can lead to serious consequences.

A bright blue flash fills his vision and a sharp pain spikes near his temple. He blinks rapidly. There’s two women in front of him. One in pink and one in purple. The one in pink says something but it takes a few moments for his brain to take it in.

“Teen,” the pink lady repeats, “Are you okay?”

Teen. Is that his name? It seems like it with the way everyone keeps looking at him when they say it.

“Yes. I mean, I think so,” he raises his hand to the slight throbbing on the side of his head. There’s a bump. How’d that get there?

My ficlet for day 5! @agathaallalongweek

Focus Pairing: Agatha/Rio/Wanda, Billy & Tommy

Summary: The fighting stops the second Rio’s skin parts. 

The fighting stops the second Rio’s skin parts. Everyone on the field stills. Billy can feel the world stop. The people attacking them dissolve into nothing as Rio falls to her knees with a grunt. She holds a hand to her stomach and Billy is horrified to see black liquid spilling out of it and over her hand.

Agatha is beside her in a second while Wanda hovers over them both. Literally. Their attackers are gone but that doesn’t mean they are safe. Not until they’re home. That doesn’t mean Wanda doesn’t want to help Rio. Billy can feel it. He can also feel her helplessness. She doesn’t know what to do.

Agatha does.

I realize that whenever I post I am speaking to people who are already predisposed against AI, but I want to argue again against using generative AI (particularly text-based genAI).

And this is not about plagiarism/theft, it's not about the environment, it's not about any of the myriad ethical issues with AI.

My job is one that requires a fair amount of critical thinking. I do (among other things) strategic, operational, and tactical planning, which means that I have to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking through what the path forward or the process should be for stuff.

One of the biggest failings I see in some people I work with, and one of the things that differentiates someone who is successful at the job versus someone who is not, is their ability to do critical thinking.

This is critical thinking at the big level, but it's also the little things. Do you know what the words you have written down say? Do you understand what you are advocating for? When faced with a challenge, big or small, do you have the ability to reason through to a solution?

This last one is most generalizable to basically all aspects of life. Your life will be very difficult if you can't look at a problem and reason through to a solution.

What does this have to do with genAI?

A lot of generative AI is about bypassing those skills. Even when you're "just" asking chatGPT to write you an email or edit your email to make it easier to read, you are bypassing the skills involved in reasoning through how to write a good email.

And those skills will atrophy. If you never need to think about how to articulate an idea clearly and concisely, you won't improve your ability to articulate an idea clearly and concisely. And when you need to do so without the aid of generative AI, you are much less likely to succeed at it.

The act of working through a problem is one of the main ways that you get better at solving problems.

Without the ability to do the thing, you also don't have the ability to check the genAI platform's work. How do you know if an email is clear, if you don't know what it means to write a clear email? How do you know if a summary of a text is right, if you don't know what happens in that text?

GenAI hallucinates. It makes stuff up. It can't do math. It's wrong, a lot, in a lot of different ways.

In the end, these are two big things that you need in your life that using genAI steals from you: 1) the ability to think critically and solve problems and 2) the ability to check work.

You will reach a point in your life where you can't genAI your way out of something. And if you don't know how to work without it, you will fail.

So do the work, even if it's harder, because you need to be able to do the work.

Don’t Mix Magic

I’m finishing off with a small, crack one shot for day seven: pregnancy(breeding) for @agathaallalongweek I hope it makes you release a puff of air

Teddy walks in with a protruding stomach.

“It’s twins!” he announces.

“You’re pregnant?” Billy gasps. “How? And who?”

“It’s yours, silly,” Teddy leans in as much as he can with such a large stomach and kisses Billy on the cheek. “Don’t forget your tie.”

Billy doesn’t have time to ask what for before Teddy disappears out of the back door. Billy follows him. There’s a wedding happening in Agatha’s backyard. There’s a bunch of decorated, fold-out chairs on either side of an aisle lined with blue, red and green flowers. His clothes have changed to a deep blue suit and he’s holding a bouquet. Teddy is at the end of the walkway on a raised platform and under a flower arch. He’s still very pregnant. Billy realises it’s his wedding and he stumbles into the aisle as music begins to play. Wanda is crying happy tears at Teddy’s shoulder and Tommy gives Billy a thumbs up on the otherside of them.

Coven Mark

Day 6! We’re almost there! @agathaallalongweek

Focus Pairing: Billy Maximoff & Agatha Harkness

Summary: Agatha has the same mark as Billy on her wrist.

Despite Agatha’s coat and her tight buttoned cuff, her sleeve slips up to reveal the mark on her wrist during her explanation of the Witches Road.

“Hey, I have one of those!” Teen says excitedly. He tries to grab Agatha’s arm without thinking. She rips it away. Instead of repeating his error, Teen holds his own arm out and pulls up his sleeve. A red crown adorns his wrist. It’s exactly the same as the one on Agatha’s. She looks at it blankly for a second, then her hand goes for his throat. 

“Agatha!” Lilia exclaims. Jen gasps. Alice’s magic forces them apart.

Agatha looks around. When she sees nothing all she says is, “huh.”

“Huh?” Jen asks incredulously. “You just tried to kill a kid.”

“Teenager,” Teen corrects.

“Teen,” Lilia scolds.

“Not the time,” Alice agrees.

“I didn’t try to kill him. Don’t be dramatic. I only made him think I was.”

“Because that’s so much better,” Jen snaps.

“Pretty traumatic,” Alice agrees.

Instead of bothering to answer, Agatha undoes the button on her cuff and rolls her sleeve up to shows the mark. Her skin is now an agitated red around the edge of it.

Vampire Coven

Day three for @agathaallalongweek ! This one is longer than the others :)

Focus Pairing: Billy Maximoff & Agatha Harkness

Summary: Agatha, an older vampire, stumbles upon Billy fresh from a feeding. An abandoned youngling is punishable by death which means she gets stuck with him. (Or, Agatha is Billy’s mentor in every universe).

Billy has never had a normal day but this one takes the cake. He’s covered in blood, there’s a body at his feet and the sweetest taste in his mouth. He doesn’t know what happened. One second he was looking for somewhere secluded to sleep and the next sweet nectar was pouring down his throat.

A presence behind him has him turning, his hands raised in defence as he hisses. A smell that isn’t human fills his nose.

“Woah there, killer,” it says.

It’s a woman with dark hair and blue eyes. The blue bleeds into the faintest hint of red, just like Billy’s.

“I didn’t do anything!” he says, backing further into the lane.

“Oh, really? You just stumbled upon this body?”  

“I— no— I’m not a killer!  didn’t mean to,” Billy says.

His breathes come out short and sharp. The panic that had been briefly smothered now rearing its head again. 

“Then why are you covered in blood?” She sounds faintly amused.

Billy looks at his shirt again and has to look away. It’s soaked.

“I don’t know what’s happening. Please don’t call the cops.”

The woman frowns. “You don’t know what you are?”

Billy can guess. The red eyes, the way no one can wake him when he’s asleep, his aching teeth…the blood. The way it smells and the way it tastes—

He shuts his eyes as he tries to block out the sudden need that fills him. He’s been fighting it so long and he keeps losing. The woman steps closer and his eyes snap open.

“No one has explained this,” she twirls her finger to encompass Billy and the body, “to you?”

“No I just— I just woke up like this,” he stammers.

“You just woke up like this,” she repeats derisively. “No. No-one ‘wakes up’ like this. The process is much too agonising for that to happen. Tell me the truth. Who is your maker?”

Substitute Teacher

Day four for @agathaallalongweek : teacher. This one is short but funny :) All of my words went into the vampire prompt (…which I am posting after this one…tomorrow...)

Focus Pairing: Billy Maximoff & Agatha Harkness

Summary: Wanda decides Agatha needs a job. Billy suffers the consequences.

Billy is chatting to the student beside him when the door opens. A familiar mass of hair makes him freeze. He watches in horror as Agatha walks into the room. Agatha is here, in his classroom, at his school.
