What I’m Built For / Mark Lee
FIC PREVIEW
Genre: Angst
A/N: I’ve had this in my drafts since around 2019, and I’ve finally found the motivation to continue it after re-watching Astro Boy, haha.
Please let me know what you think! It’s been so long since I’ve been able to write/ been inspired to write. I would appreciate your feedback or asks as it is motivating to hear. That being said no pressure lol only leave feedback if you want to.
He was the first of its kind, M4RK 99, or as you had dubbed him as ‘Mark.’ He was the first in a series of secret weapons known as Project 127. He was made to look like a human only to be the world’s deadliest weapon in disguise. He was equipped with the most advanced technology SM could get their hands on. Each scientist had one robot to monitor and SM had appointed you to monitor the progress of M4RK 99. If it weren’t for the cameras in his eyes and energy core where his heart should’ve been Mark could’ve easily passed as a regular human being. He had emotions like one, the material used for his skin and hair was so life-like, and there was always a sparkle in his eye.
You called Mark over. You wanted to check his status and make sure all his circuits were in order. Lately, Mark had been shy about his check ups. You didn’t understand why though, you’d always been the one to fix him whenever he’d short circuit or malfunction, but recently Mark had become more hesitant about his routine checkups. He’d been going to Ten instead of you, which was odd since Ten was already assigned to monitor the progress of J0HNNY 95.
“Let’s see how you’re doing,” you told him as you brought hand to his abdomen to lift up the panel. You began fixing anything that seemed out of place to you. You could feel Mark overheating, he wasn’t making eye contact with you and he wasn’t speaking either which was odd. For a robot, Mark was usually very expressive with his emotions. You closed the panel and looked up at him, “Is everything okay Mark?”
He paused for a moment, processing the information. You could see the cameras in his pupils zoning in on you, “I’m alright, I’ve just been thinking a lot lately.”
“About what?” You’d been worried about Mark, especially since he’d been acting strange lately. When he needed to test the weaponry installed in him he usually was hesitant to try. Mark was designed to be a fighter, but he seemed to take no interest in his role.
“Why do I have to be built for war Y/N? I wish I was Companionship Bot,” he sighed.
“Why?”
“Because they’re built to help not hurt. They get to experience life like humans,” Mark explained.
“Most companionship robots are meant for taking care of children or the elderly, or they help keep lonely people company. It’s not a very exciting job,” you told him, in hopes of making the idea of being a Companionship Bot less appealing.
Mark leaned closer whispering in your ear, “I heard that sometimes people fall in love with their Companionship bots is that true Y/N?”
You scoffed, “That’s ridiculous, where did you hear that?!”
“I read about on a database, ‘The Relationships Between Bots and People. Do you want me to print it for you?” Mark grinned, proud to share this newfound information.
“No Mark,” You made note to monitor what kind of data Mark had been taking in for your next checkup. You were too deep in thought to notice Mark’s face was only inches away from yours. “Mark, what’re you doing?”
“Y/N, can I kiss you?” Mark asked, his face inching closer to your own.
“Mark! W-Why?!” You looked down hoping he couldn’t see your blush.
“Your heart rate is increasing, and so is your body temperature. You’re blushing,” Mark reported with a cheeky smile.
Shoot. You forgot you had installed a scanner in Mark.
“I just want to know what it’s like. It’s probably one of the only human things I’ll get to experience since I’m always stuck in this lab. Please, Y/N,” He lifted your chin making your eyes meet his.
You sighed, unable to deny his request. “Just one kiss,” You leaned in gently brushing your lips against the kiss. You could feel Mark’s lips they were warm. You could feel him overheating as you brought a hand up to cup his cheek. You pulled back, dropping your head onto his shoulder.
What did I just do? You thought to yourself. You began to worry if your actions would only influence Mark’s desire to stray from what he was built for. Mark had always been reluctant to fight in training sessions, and fire missiles during target practice. He was built for war not companionship.
