I find more and more despicable everyday to see how many italians, specifically people who would usually define themselves as progressive, humane, as people with a clean conscience, are still talking of the so-called "Albania model" as a mere gotcha against Meloni and the current far-right government as a whole, denouncing its "inefficiency" and "waste of taxpayers' money". To many people nothing apparently lies beyond mockery, the ultimate horizon of political debate: see, the adversary is so incapable, so much of an useless quarreler, so irredeemably dumb, they can't even manage to be as evil as they want! But were this project going as well as it was thought of, would all the people complicit in it be worthy of an applause? Or even better would it not even be worthy of being talked about? The mere concept of your country using another country's soil - a former colony! - as their backdoor garbage bin (because that's the perception too many italians have of Albania) where to collect undesired human lives like they were spoiled goods, lives arbitrarily sorted according to the most malignant standards that will decide if they really are so worthy of being helped or not, and all done with the logistic cooperation and ideological concordance between the two countries' leaders and their respective state apparatus - the woman who got to her place by wielding thousands of lives as a rhetorical weapon and her loyal kneeling knight, the bestie of Erdoğan and Netanyahu - this alone should have anyone's blood curdled. And I don't even have time to start talking about how the actual living (or surviving, when one has the fortune to do so) conditions in italian CPRs are! (link if you don't know what CPRs are). But what have too many politicians, those who are supposed to be this government's opposition, and too many journalists denounced since the beginning? That it costs too much, that they don't have enough personnel, that they're wasting tax money, that we italians are unprepared as always, that it's, logistically speaking, a "dangerous mess"! Are all of these supposedly progressive people just money-oriented ghouls, whose only issue with this whole project lies in how it's being carried forward? If you asked, many would, clearly, deny that. And yet a better framing of the issue - the issue being not how (efficiently) other people's lives are managed but the fact that they're being managed at all - a discussion that would dare to take into consideration for more than 10 minutes that it's people we're talking about and not objects, that has yet to find any space at all into the mainstream political discourse.
