Why Discouraged Young Composers Shouldn’t Give Up
If you think your music isn’t good enough, there’s a very high likelihood you’re measuring your progress incorrectly. Most young artists compare their music to the industry leaders who made history with their music.
Never compare yourself by parameters that don’t apply to you. The progress of other composers doesn’t apply to your own personal growth.
The real questions you must ask yourself are these:
Have I made progress since my last composition?
Am I writing better than I was a few months ago?
What strengths does this piece have that my others didn’t?
In what ways can I improve for my next piece?
The only way you should ever measure the quality of your work is based on your own compositional improvement.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. It’s that important. You will rob yourself of ambition, courage, and joy if you are comparing your compositions to the work of Tchaikovsky. You will build confidence in your music if you measure your progress.
Quick reminder, especially for you younger undergrads: Discipline is a skill, not a character trait. And just like any skill, it can be practiced and improved upon incrementally. Try not to get discouraged if you have a day, or multiple days, where you are less disciplined than you would like or need to be. Don’t quit. Don’t spend the next week binging Netflix because you think it’s a hopeless endeavour. Just get up the next day and try again. Each day you try is more practice, and each day you practice, you’ll get a little bit better, and that continual improvement will pay dividends in the long run.
Keep at it.
I can’t believe this needs to be said, but the rich are not doing you a service by employing you. They require you. Everything they have is contingent on the fact that you work for them and do what they say. Without you, the rich have literally nothing. Workers have power over the entire economy.
It is actually workers doing a major service to their employers by not unionizing and not starting a revolution, since literally the only thing workers need to do to grind the entire economy to a halt is put their hands behind their back and stop working. That is it. Workers could crash the entire machine in one moment if they wanted.
Stop calling them “job creators.” They aren’t. They literally require you. But you dont require them. You are wealth creators. And you have the power to take it back whenever you want. You just have to organize.

┏( >o<)┓I may be human who makes mistakes but I am not a mistake! And neither are you! I’m not sorry!!! I am thankful for the people who support me!!!!!
honestly i think the existence of beauty apps and snapchat filters that completely alter the shape of one’s face is probably doing a fuckton of damage to everyone’s attitudes towards ourselves & perception of beauty
like it’s one thing to be inundated with a ton of magazine ads and instagram posts with heavily retouched images of beautiful people all the time, like that’s gonna do a lot of damage on its own
but this stuff especially- constantly seeing images of your own face remodeled to the point where it doesn’t even look human- really fucks with your perception of your own face. to the point where the more you use these filters and these apps, the more your normal face looks unattractive and abnormal. like i know people who won’t send snapchats to other people unless they’re using one of those filters where your chin is right underneath your mouth and your nose is barely visible!
it’s just so damaging, and for all the talk i see about magazines and makeup i’m surprised there isn’t more concern regarding this shit
i think i wanna start running...!
Sometimes the finish line is just the start of something new

uh adhd culture is thinking 30 minutes is plenty of time to finish a task but the next day needing 3. hours for the same task
or procrastinating the task because “it will take foooreeeever” and it’s boring but then it takes you like 10 min at best and you start to wonder why you’re like this
people on here act like modern au enjolras would be a successful politician like no u know damn well he’d be an actual convicted felon and who has gotten banned from five of his local bars and at least one grocery store and has probably punched at least one (1) cop in the past week
enjolras: I would like to run for office I-
journalist: sir it says here that you have a criminal record and that you’ve been using your twitter account @ marxsupporter to tweet insults at politicians you dont like and advocate communism, is that true?
enjolras: well y-
journalist: and is it true that you said that the entire system is broken and that the only way to fix it is through armed revolution?
enjolras: yes and i was right
journalist: did you say, word for word, “I will personally guillotine every billionaire”?
