One of the most haunting lines in the entirety of Six of Crows is Jan Van Eck's "If you're reading this, I love you." Every time I think about I'm stunned all over again because it's so simple and so easy to mistake as sweet at first but it's not, and that makes it even crueler.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me the mortal aging process in Elfame. Jude keeps mentioning how she’ll die and all the jazz and Cardan will live forever but Ex-High King has that human consort who doesn’t seem to age. So will she die when she’s old or live forever since she’s High Queen???
i want to talk about this because this always seems to be a point of confusion for the fandom.
Jude is constantly aware of the differences between herself and the Folk. and understandably so. throughout the whole series, she's reminded that her life will be brief compared to that of the fae, and that, because of its brevity, her existence means nothing.
but this doesn't mean it's true.
as exhibited by Val Moren (and confirmed by Holly herself on twitter), if a human stays in Faerieland, they will not age or die. the Folk likely know this. so it seems to me that this "reminder" they're always dangling in front of Jude is more of a tactic to keep mortals in their place.
when the Fae tell Jude she will return to the dirt to rot one day soon, it's not exactly a lie, but the truth of the statement is contingent on her presumed inevitable return to the mortal world. and it is more so a reminder that, while she may have been raised in Elfhame and gone to school with the Gentry, she is not one of them. she will never belong in Faerie.
this is not true either. (as exhibited by, well, the entire series)
but when you're told something over and over again, even if it is untrue, you start to believe it. this is why, by the start of TCP, Jude believes the lie she has been told from the moment she stepped foot in Elfhame. the three books that follow her story aim to tear down that belief.
