Candles melted low, the moon climbed and fell, and still neither of you slept. If the walls could speak, they would have blushed.
You sat before the mirror as your servants moved about you, their hands gentle, their pauses deliberate. Silk was drawn over your shoulders, but it did nothing to still the heat that lingered beneath your skin.
“My lady seems… weary,” one murmured, fastening your robes. “The night must have been long.”
You cleared your throat. “It passed quickly enough.”
Another servant stifled a smile as she knelt to adjust your sandals. “Forgive us if we walk slowly today. We would not wish to trouble legs that have already been… overworked.”
Your breath caught despite yourself.
“That is quite enough,” you said, though your voice lacked its usual command.
“Oh, of course,” she replied sweetly. “We forget ourselves. It is simply—his lordship’s return has made the palace very lively.”
The door slid open before you could answer.
Sukuna stepped inside, hair loose, expression infuriatingly satisfied. His eyes flicked to you—just once—and the corner of his mouth curved.
“Are they treating you gently?” he asked.
One servant bowed. “As gently as the morning allows, my lord.”
He hummed. “Good. I would hate for my wife to suffer more than she already has.”
Your glare earned only a low chuckle from him as he leaned closer, voice meant only for you.
“Still trembling,” he murmured. “I must have done something right.”
You hissed his name under your breath.
The servants pretended very hard not to hear.
