pairing — tsukishima kei x reader
kei looks up from his book, pushing up his spectacles with slender fingers.
"no, really? i haven't noticed," he replies drily. "you're telling me that the noise outside was rain all along? what a shocker."
you scrunch your nose up, sticking a mocking tongue out at him. even after you guys had started dating, his smarminess never diminished. in fact, it had only grown over time, but its edges were softened by the ever present fondness that lingered in his eyes.
"i wanna play in the rain," you turn your attention back onto the window, watching as raindrops race each other down the glass, knocking and melding into one another. (sort of like how you and kei were, if you thought about it. it took you two a year of competing for best in class, another year of friendly rivalry that consisted of study sessions, before you finally got together, with a little help from tadashi of course.)
"not unless you wanna catch a cold," kei doesn't even lift his gaze up as he rejects your idea.
you pout, letting out a loud sigh of disappointment as you slump back into your chair. it's enough to drag kei's attention off his book for a second, and that second was all you need to bring out your best dejected face. puppy dog eyes never worked on kei, you learnt that a long time ago. but disappointment, oho, disappointment was your best friend when you wanted to get your way.
"five minutes," he sighs, setting his book down with an audible smack. "then straight to the shower, okay?"
you bounce up immediately, a large grin replacing the frown.
“five minutes,” he repeats sharply after your running figure. you can hear his exasperated sigh as he follows after you. as much as he’d deny it, you know kei loves playing in the rain just as much as you did. there was a certain lightness to him you never got to see any time else, and you took every chance you could to see it.
the door slams open and you leap out into the pouring rain, smiling brightly as you spin around to face him. kei remains in the doorway, arms folded in mock disapproval. but the slight grin that tugs his lips up gives away his emotions, and you’re quick to tug him into the rain with you. he yelps softly, stumbling as his long legs try to coordinate with the slippery ground.
the glare he shoots you softens into a tender look of fondness, filled with emotions words lack the power to capture. his hands come up to cup your rain-soaked cheeks, thumbs caressing them gently. no matter how long you’ve been together, your breath still hitches at his closeness, close enough to see and count every one of his lashes.
“music?” he says quietly.
you nod and he pulls an earpiece from his ear, plugging it into yours. your hand slides into his pocket faster than he can process, and you’re pulling away from him before he can stop you. (not that he would, he’d listen to anything you want him to, no matter what genre it was.)
the familiar tune fills your ears, bringing matching smiles to both your faces. you slip his phone back into his pocket, your arms coming up to wrap around his neck.
it’s a simple sway back-and-forth, turning in slow clockwise circles. but to the both of you, it holds months’ worth of memories - dances much like these, some under pouring rain, some in the midst of the night, some in the supermarket aisles. and all of which are filled with the very same bliss, his hands on your waist, his eyes locked on you.
his soft smile is bright, even under the cover of dark clouds and rain. kei pulls you in closer, tucking his head into your neck.
“i love the rain,” you grip him tighter.
