Yuki Hayashi Birthday Project!

You might not have heard his name, but chances are you heard his music: this amazing Japanese composer is the genius behind the soundtracks for anime like Haikyuu!!, Boku no Hero Academia, DRAMAtical Murder, Death Parade, Kiznaiver, One Piece Gold, Dive!!, Ballroom e Youkoso etc. I have recently gotten a chance to reach him via Internet, and Hayashi-san himself started paying more attention to foreign fans (tweeting in English and, for example, asking how he can make his music more accessible for overseas fans). And that is why we decided to organize this project on behalf of his foreign fans, wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his outstanding music!

I’m reading the Italian version of Haikyuu!! vol.21 and I’m still not over how they translated “Such an asshole”. “Sei davvero una cacchetta” it’s actually closer to “you are a real shit” but in a very affectionate/childish way. Like I’m telling you you’re sort of a jerk in this moment for what you are saying/doing but I still love you, also for what you are saying and what you are. Not “despite” but “also”. In an inclusive way that speaks of inside jokes, trust and a very strong relationship where you can joke and insult playfully the other while not having to worry about them being offended because it’s all in good fun and also a very sneaky way to tell the other you love them too. That’s something me and my sister, me and my boyfriend, me and my friends, tell each other when we are being jerk but with a sort of fondness running below. I don’t know if I can explain this but it’s really cute of Iwaizumi to say “sei proprio una cacchetta” to Oikawa. I kinda expect him to turn every new panel and reply with a very coquettish “Oh, you didn’t have to, darling.”

Okay so i KNOW i reblogged this already, but @kayejwrotes​ added an extra thought that pulled me in like a sucker:

“It would be funny to see how that speech bubble was in the original Japanese manga, just to see how much the translation changed the meaning of it from Japanese, to English to Italian. I wonder how much of the original meaning is there in the Italian translation, honestly.”

As I mentioned in my tags when I initially reblogged this post, this sort of language/translation stuff is my shit so I rose from the grave to discuss this. We all live and die for iwaoi i am merely a humble servant. Discussion of the original Japanese/English scanlations; linguistics; context etc. ahead!! Putting this under a read more tag because welp I wrote a lot!
