"…Ah?"

The bluenette’s eyes shot open, staring at the sky above him with a confused expression. This— this made no sense, right? After all, the sky above him was bright red. Not blue, as he was used to seeing every single day of his life. And turning his head to the side, he noticed that nothing about this place seemed familiar. Brow furrowing, he stood to his feet, brushing himself off and beginning to walk.

Though, the further he went, the stranger it seemed to get. Everything was too quiet; he hadn’t seen a single person yet. Why was he even here in the first place—?

"H…Hello?" Kaito called out, cupping his hands around his mouth as if using them as a megaphone. "Is anyone around?! Hello!!"

Yamamoto turned the corner after hearing someone's voice, only to see someone he didn't recognize at all.

"Oh! Hey! You must be a new player!! Isn't this place weirdly realistic? Best quality VR I've seen in my life!!" He extended his hand for a handshake. "I'm Yamamoto Takeshi, what's your name?"

She really didn’t know how to answer him at all. Memories from past timelines flooded into her mind; those horrifying images were all too much. They were much too horrible. She didn’t want to remember. So, she just kept them hidden. Momo tilted her head with a nervous chuckle.

"Haha.. yeah. There are some dangerous things lurking here. Like, before you came, a snake lunged out at me and almost killed me! That’s really scary!!" Ah, yes. Getting out of the haze was not an easy task at all. Usually, after everyone was killed off, Mary would reset the timeline. But. Mary isn’t present at the moment, so finding another solution would be rather difficult.. but hey, it’s better than getting killed off, yeah?

The blonde nodded, tapping her chin thoughtfully with her index finger. She puffed out her cheeks, “Well, it won’t be easy! If you wanna stay here and melt in the heat, let’s stay! Or.. escape the heat! I honestly can’t stand heat at all!” Humor would definitely keep her going for a while.

"A snake!? They're that dangerous here!?" He looked shocked for a moment, then went back to his usual care free face. "Hm, well since it's VR I guess they can program things to be as deadly as they want. ...I didn't know there were other 'living things' around here, though. Are they all hiding? Maybe if we stick together they won't attack us!"

Once she mentioned the heat, Yamamoto remembered how hot it was. He was focused on the conversation earlier, but now that she brought it up, he couldn't ignore it.

"Ah, it's boiling today, isn't it? Maybe one of the buildings has air conditioning and we can escape there to cool off!"

"…" She gripped the hem of her sweater tightly, lowering her gaze to the ground. He.. was new to the haze, wasn’t he? Oh, what an unfortunate soul, indeed. This wasn’t the first time the idol had been in the haze. She returned to it many times, only to be killed off in the end. Ah, but that kind of talk is gloomy, isn’t it? "…"

”.. yeah, that’s fine. It’s not good to be wandering around here alone; the things that loiter around are dangerous! I’ve been wandering for quite a bit, eheh.” Finally snapping out of her funk, she curved her lips upward into a smile once more, pulling her hood over her head as she did so. Thumbs up! “Let’s do our best to get out of here!”

Yamamoto's eyes widened, he hadn't really seen anything he thought was dangerous yet, but then again, he hadn't spent so much time around. 

"Huh, there's dangerous things around here? How long have you been around? I got here recently and I didn't see much that seemed dangerous." Then she mentioned 'getting out'. "That getting out you mentioned, is that part of the main quest? From what I've heard, it's really difficult, isn't it?"

Where am I....?

It’s the first question that enters her hazy mind; the question lazily drifts around her head as she struggles to stand. Where am I?  What happened? She’s not in her apartment, nor is she in school: nothing looks familiar and everything hurts. She exhales and shakily removes her glasses. She wipes them clean and gasps as she spots the spiderweb of cracks that maps the surface of her spectacles. 

What’s happening? I’m scared….

Yamamoto happened to be passing by the area, minding his own business, until he saw another person who looked absolutely shaken. He'd been around enough to recognize who was new and who wasn't, and this girl was clearly new. 

"Hey, you look like you're new here!! It's amazing virtual reality, isn't it? Everything feels so real!!"

Blurred eyesight. A pain in her chest; as well as… her face colliding with cold, hard flooring. Consciousness slowly regaining itself from that episode, Takane pushed herself up off of the school’s floor, holding her head with one hand.

Just… what exactly was she supposed to be doing, again? Memories flittered back and forth. But no concrete reason; both for what happened, what the twintailed girl was supposed to do, and for why the sky seemed just a bit more redder than usual.  Takane figured it’d be best to begin moving. Something just felt…off, at the moment. A voice at the back of her head suggested finding and asking someone about it; but unneeded pride said ‘No’. Stepping out of the school, tired and somewhat worried eyes glanced around— it felt…unnaturally empty. Unnaturally quiet, as well as hot.

At this rate, finding anyone might be a blessing.

Yamamoto finally found his way to the school in this town, along with a younger girl in front of it.

"Hey! Another person, and in front of the school, too! Do you know where the baseball field is around here?" He stopped in front of her and extended a hand to greet her. "Oh, sorry!! I'm Yamamoto Takeshi! What's your name?"

Kano tilted his head, blinking as if absorbing the reply he received from the youth. With a smile that slowly splayed across his pale lips, the laughter started up again in an instant.

“U-Uwah! Role playing… Nono, see, that isn’t it at all." The laughter faded, though his smile remained. If one were to look, they may have noticed the intensity behind his gaze. Almost envious of the sort of innocence this person seemed to hold. You had to cherish such a thing while you had it, and yet…

The smile became distant as his thoughts moved themselves along, but in an instant it had returned with the trace of a laugh. “No, no, see. This is all real." The boy with the cat-eyed gaze gave the other a once-over, as if assessing his abilities. Giving himself a shrug, Kano stuck one hand into the pocket of his hoodie casually, holding out his other toward the boy. "Anyway, anyway. Name’s Kano.”

Yamamoto didn't know why this guy was laughing, but decided to go along with it and laugh along with him. It never hurt to laugh, right? He concluded that this guys role playing abilities were top notch too, especially to try and throw him off from thinking it was VR.

"Hey, you're a fun guy! I appreciate you trying to make the experience feel even more real for me, but it's plenty realistic already!" He decided not to list again why he thought it felt real, since he did that already. Instead he went to shake the hand of the other boy, whose name he now knew was Kano, and officially greet him. "Nice to meet you, Kano! I look forward to playing with someone who seems to have lots of experience already!"

"Gahh!" Shrieking in surprise, and fell back on her bottom. She hadn’t expected for a face to be there when she blinked! Now her butt really hurt, eheh.. With a nervous chuckle, she scratched her head awkwardly and hesitantly grasped his hand, pulling her back up.

Whoa, like, what a major cutie. I mean. “It’s nice to meet you, Yamamoto! I’m sorry I was spying on you like that, eheh. I’m trying to find my friends and my brother, but in this haze.. I can’t seem to find anything at all.” She heaved a sigh, a frown replacing her smile quickly.

"Oh, sorry for surprising you!!" He looked apologetic for a second, then went back to his usual cheery self. After listening to what she had to say, he pat her head a few times and looked off into the distance of the haze.

"Nice to meet you too! No worries, it's good to look out for yourself in an unfamiliar place, right?" He puts his hand to his chin and looks contemplative. "Maybe we all met before getting into this virtual reality, but then our memories were wiped for a more intense game experience...." But then he snaps back to normal. "Anyway, you can't find your friends and brother, huh? Sounds like a fun quest! Can I help you with it?"

Crap. He saw her. Now, that wasn’t according to the plan at all! She just attempted to hide herself even more behind the plant, if that was even possible at all. Momo had thought that her hiding spot was absolutely perfect, but it seems like she was caught almost immediately.. Maybe it was her eye power. Or maybe, she was just really bad at hiding.

She still wasn’t planning to be caught just yet, so she continued to crouch there.

Yamamoto saw the plant rustle, his eyes were well trained from years of baseball. He thought he saw some discoloration in the foliage as well, but decided to write it off as a glitch in the system. However, he couldn't get rid of a nagging feeling that something was there, and decided to step closer to the plant and look behind it.

"Oh, so there is someone here!" He straightened himself up, smiled, and extended a hand. "I'm Yamamoto Takeshi, nice to meet you!"

Humming her newly released song to herself, she was carelessly strolling through the building without a single care in the world, just enjoying the quiet atmosphere. Her daydreams were interrupted by a couple of faraway footsteps and immediately, the first thing she did was hide behind a plant.

Call her silly, but this was basically instinct to her now. She was literally a flailing duck when it came to fans noticing her in public, especially when her eye ability made them run after her. With her orange hues peering through the artificial leaves, she stared at the passerby with curiousness.

Yamamoto was strolling around, admiring the wonderful virtual reality world he had suddenly found himself in. There wasn't any use in worrying about how or why he was there; the fact was that he couldn't find a way to get out, so he decided to just enjoy himself. His stroll was interrupted, however, by the sudden urge to turn towards a piece of artificial fauna.

"Hey.... what're you doing over there?"

"No, you just look the age."

Then something hits you about what he said. You feel a strange anger in the pit of your stomach, like by doubting the Daze’s existence he’s insulting you yourself, and you know it’s unreasonable but your voice gets louder and you need to prove your point to this blockhead if it’s going to kill you.

"Listen. If you’re not afraid of death, if you really think this is a game, then go test it out yourself. And if you think I’m not serious, I’ll do it for you. No harm meant, but I promise you, you won’t just wake up in the ‘real world.’ You don’t get out. It’s that simple."

You take a breath.

"Are you brave enough to question it?"

Yamamoto laughs casually at Kido's remark about his age.

"Oh, alright! People think I'm older than I actually am because of my height, though. I'm really 14." Once she starts talking again, he listens to all she says, impressed with how serious she is in her role playing. She must've been an admin or well-programmed NPC.

"Test out the game, huh? Okay, but I still don't know the rules, could you explain the basic stuff to me, at least? I'm not sure what you want me to question... is it part of a Quest?"

"Jeez, I didn’t know it was possible for someone your age to be so dense." It makes your head hurt how adamantly he refuses. "Don’t you feel how hot it is? A VR can’t cause sensory differences in temperature and feeling. Unless you were strapped down in a straitjacket and hooked up to sensors… That’s just ridiculous." You press your fingers to your temples. "You’re gonna have to accept this if you want to survive."

Rolling your eyes, you look back up at the boy. “Anyway, I’m Kido.”

"Hm? Dense?" He feels hurt for a second, but then remembers that the girl is only role playing and doesn't actually mean what she's saying. Probably. "Well I mean, if the people who made this VR put so much work into the environment, I wouldn't be surprised it they hooked us up to sensors and all the rest to make it feel more real! And survive? It's a game, so if we die we'll just be brought back to life, right?" He smiled, obviously satisfied with his reasoning.

After hearing the girls name, Yamamoto extended his hand for a handshake. "Nice to meet you, Kido!" He paused, and remembered more of what she had just said. "Hey.... how would you know how old I am? Do you remember anything from before we were in this game? Or are you guessing from how I look?"

Kano tilted his head and gave a laugh. What was so funny? The other youth may not have known by the way his smile became exaggerated with every chuckle. Ah, a game, was it? Kano was slightly envious of thoughts such as those. A game. Though it may have appeared as a shiny new virtual reality, the truth was… Well, it was more of a strategic game of chess.

“U-Uwahh! Sorry-sorry!! What you said though, you sounded serious!" He wiped a tear from his eye. "Real funny joke!" This guy couldn’t be serious, right? After all, the memory of death should…

"Haha, of course I'm serious! I mean, I love joking too, but wow.... you're taking your role playing really seriously!"

He's completely convinced himself that his "death" was really just a virtual reality experience, solely there for the purpose of game world-building and adding plot.

"I mean... my arm is perfectly fine, even after I jumped..." He cut himself off before mentioning the jump off the roof, because even if it was VR, he sure as hell didn't want to remember all the emotions that felt so real that came with it. "Well, point is, with the weird scenery and everything, and my arm, I wasn't joking at all! This is some amazing stuff!!"

"You’re too loud. Calm down a little bit." 

You let out a breath. This guy is insufferably naive. At first it’s almost hilarious how silly he sounds. Talking about video games, virtual realities… You don’t even want to break it to him.

(You break it to him.)

"Yamamoto… This isn’t a VR game. You’re dead."

Yamamoto lowers his voice a little to accommodate the girl's request. Although, he can't resist laughing loudly at what she tells him.

"I'm dead and this isn't a game, huh? I don't think that's possible. I mean, if I were dead, how could I be alive and talking to you now? And this weird world is definitely made from VR, or else the sky couldn't be red! Hm, but if this is a role playing game where we pretend we're all living-dead... I guess I should play along too!" He takes a deep breath. "Okay, I guess us dead should get to know each other then, right? You never really introduced yourself."
