Come on out!!! See you there!!
You work as a lumberjack. One day, you drive your axe into a tree and hear it scream.
Krista broke every mold. Every last mold. Krista was 5’6, 293 lbs and curvy as the day was long. Krista liked getting massages and her nails done. Krista liked rom-com’s and cheesecake. Krista sang with EVERY song that came on.
And Krista was the best lumberjack Forest Greene LLC. ever had. Ever. Most of the guys she worked with couldn’t stand her. Every day she chopped circles around them. They’d leave to go home, and she’d still be there, chopping away.
Krista had a secret.
Krista liked chopping trees. Because each tree represented an ex-boyfriend in her life. For every man she had ever dated that hurt her, used her, abused her, she’d manifest them into a tree.
Then swing an axe at it until it cried splinters.
December 31st was unseasonably warm. Krista didn’t have New Year’s Eve plans, so she went to the site to cut more trees. She saw a patch that was close to the river bank and grabbed the axe and chainsaw (just in case) and headed over.
“Hello Justin”, she said, walking up to a particularly scrawny looking tree. She grabbed the axe and smiled. This would be so easy. Less than ten chops if she had to count.
Krista grabbed her gloves, picked up the axe and swung it hard. It bounced. It literally bounced off the tree. She picked up the axe, perplexed and tried again. Again, the axe bounced.
Even more perplexed, Krista took the axe to the grinder, sharpened it a bit, and tested it on a nearby log. With one swift stroke, she split the log in half.
Walking back over to the tree, she picked up the axe once more, and swung it hard.
“I don’t care how strong you think you are”, Krista said in between swings, “you’re going down, Justin!”
The first swing chipped away at the outside bark, leaving a nick in the wood.
The second swing hit a little deeper, taking more bark with it, and Krista laughed loudly.
“Remember Christmas, Justin?” she said, with another hit. “Remember me trying to explain my swollen jaw?”
With every chop, another part of Krista’s soul healed. But she wasn’t done. She needed to hear one more thing.
Krista picked up the axe, closed her eyes, and recited a small incantation. She picked up the axe, and swung at the tree one last time.
“AAAAHHHHHH!”
The scream echoed in the air, and suddenly a small face formed in the tree, looking directly at her as it tipped and fell over.
“What the hell!” the tree yelled, as it lay on the ground, looking up. “Krista?”
“Hello, Justin.”
Krista grabbed the axe and with a swift blow, cut another chunk of tree off the trunk part the still stood.
“AAAAHHH!!!! Stop that!” Justin the tree screamed.
“Why?” Krista said, standing the axe upright, leaning on it slightly. ”You liked hitting me, right?”
“You deserved to be hit, you little…”
“Wrong answer”, Krista said, and swung the axe again into the tree bark, chopping another huge chunk off.
“Wait! Wait!” Justin the tree exclaimed. “We can talk. You like talking, right?”
“I’m listening”, Krista said with a smirk. “Go ahead.”
“I shouldn’t have treated you that way”, Justin the tree said. “You didn’t deserve that.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“And you were good to me”, he said, sawdust pouring from the trees cuts.
“Very good”, Krista said.
“So...let’s just forgive and forget”, he said, his tree branches flailing about.
“OK, sure”, Krista said.
The tree breathed a sigh of relief. “Can I go back now?” Justin the tree said. “Can I go back to my body?”
“Oh, I’m afraid not”, Krista said.
“So, I just live like a tree now?” Justin the tree said, anger rising in his voice.
“No. Not live.” Krista brought the axe up and swiftly began chopping away at the remaining parts of the tree, her happy singing overshadowing his screams. When she finished, she gather the logs, and placed them in the pile over in the corner. She looked down at her watch.
“3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!” she said to herself, as she moved over to the next tree towards the bank.
In a living room, not far away, a beautiful woman silently prayed a prayer of thanks as her boyfriend Justin dropped dead in the middle of hitting her face for the fourth time.
For every person who loves you, a small black heart appears on your chest over your heart. One day, you discover another heart, but you don’t know who it’s from.
At 63, Clara was lucky to still have five hearts still with her. Most of her family had forgotten her. Since she chose to live a life of solitude and had no husband or children, her contact with outside people was very limited.
Suffering from joint pain, and chronic bronchitis, Clara had her meals delivered and was a faithful member of the TV church programs she watched. Even her doctor made house visits for her. And when her niece and nephew came to visit, she always delighted to see them.
Crazy old Aunt Clara. She would regal them storied from her youth. How she was around for the explosion of “free love” that the 60’s brought, and how she was at Studio 54 so much, she was a regular. They listened intently, helped her make cookies from the frozen dough, and always locked up behind themselves when she would talk herself into a nap.
Clara hadn’t always been such a recluse. In 1973, she met Anthony. Anthony Perkins was the bouncer at Studio 54. One night she came in with her regular crowd and saw a new face.
“Where’s Jack?” Clara said to the bouncer as she showed her I.D.
“Jack quit. Something about getting married to the perfect girl or some crap like that”, he said. “I’m Anthony. Just call me Tony.” He handed her back her I.D. “You’re good”, he said, automatically reaching for the next person’s I.D.
Clara went in, but something about the bouncer, drew her back to the door, which is where she spent the remainder of the night.
Days turned into months, and pretty soon, Tony and Clara were inseparable and right after their one year anniversary, he proposed. Their hearts had appeared on each other’s chests.
The day of Clara’s wedding was highly anticipated. All her friends and family showed. The Wedding March was set to play and Clara was a vision, beautifully dressed and adorned.
One minute. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Thirty minutes. One hour.
No Tony.
No one could find him.
Three hours later, tears dried, and anger buried deep in her heart, Clara stood, and boldly walked out the church.
That’s when she saw Tony’s heart leave her chest.
One by one, her friend’s hearts left.
Family died, and they’re hearts left.
Only five left.
Clara always liked Tuesdays. She never really knew why, but she always did. That’s when she noticed the new heart.
Six now.
“Who is this?” she said, looking at herself in the mirror after her morning shower.
The heart was had broken lines in it, and it was fuzzy, but never the less it was there.
Days passed into months and the heart got clearer, the color deepening on her chest.
On Clara’s 64th birthday, she woke up, singing. She showered and looking in the mirror while drying off, examined the heart on her chest and dropped her towel with a soft scream.
The heart clearly said: Anthony Perkins.
A knock on the door snapped her back to reality, and she robed and opened the door.
“Clara”, he said. “I think I have some explaining to do.”
A witch has cursed you to find out who the world needs you to be. She brings all different versions of you living within the minds of others to life in a massive hall. You are about to meet them and are astonished by how different they all are.
She opened the large oak doors with trembling hands. The door groaned loudly with movement, only causing her hands to still and shake further.
She couldn’t do this. How? What if she found out if everyone hated her? What if- what if! This witch was crazy!
Squeezing her eyes shut to prevent tears from falling from them, she gathered the last remaining scraps of her strength and pushed open the door.
Slowly, wishing she could just turn around and leave, she opened her eyes.
Dozens of different versions of her gathered round the room. Some with long hair, and childish faces. Others with short hair and a too sharp bone structure. A version of her dressed in blood red was drinking by herself at a far away table and giggling to herself, even though her eyes looked vacant. Another ran around the room with a childish stature and stars in her eyes, giggling as she went. One curled up in the corner, her eyes red and swollen as she sniffled gently. One stood tall, with her nose in the air, a haute look in her eyes, and her hands clenched by her sides.
Spinning around, her breath clogged in her throat as she surveyed every person in the room.
Long hair. Short hair. Depressed. Happy. Insane. Cold. Distant. Loud. Silent.
They were all gathered in the room.
“Sad, isn’t it? That no one can truly say they know themselves.”
The sudden voice caused her to whirl around, her eyes widening.
Standing tall next to her was a women flickering in and out of existence. Her denim skirt fell against her thighs and her long sleeved white top tied around her waist. One second she was there, the next she was not. Flickering in and out of experience. In. Out. In. Out.
“What?” She asked, stepping away from her slightly as she flickered out of existence once more.
“Well, think about it.” The Other her shrugged. “No one noes you better than yourself, right? Yet, you have no idea how to view yourself, so you just end up with a collection of paradoxes. The depressed one, the uptown girl, the drunk, the child. You’ve changed yourself so many times to fit the needs of others that you’ve lost sight of who you actually are.”
“Isn’t that why I’ve been cursed!” She exclaimed, her words coming out shrill and sharp. “To find out?”
The figure only stared back at her, flickering out of existence once more.
“The witch is wrong.” They finally stated, a soft look in her eyes. “You can never be who the world wants you to be because the world is always changing its mind. People aren’t 2D. They can’t be happy all the time, they can’t be sad all the time. You can only be the best person you can be. There is no shame in crying, or in making mistakes. The world does not care, because in the end you are just one person.”
Scoffing, she narrowed her eyes at her stoic doppelgänger.
“Which version of me are you anyway?”
The flickering figure only smiled, a sad look creeping in to her off-brown eyes.
“I’m how your brothers saw you.”
She could only flinch, silently watching the crying and screaming child in the corner of the hall.
She hadn’t seen either of her brothers in three years.
Beautiful and inspirational! Thanks for writing this @crystalballsaysurfullofit
She ran all the way home. Out of breath, she unlocked her apartment door, and quickly rushed inside, locking the door behind her.
“There is no such thing as witches!” she screamed aloud. She took off her jacket and started a cup of tea. She needed to calm down.
All her life she’d been trying to be what everyone wanted her to be. Now all of a sudden this witch comes along and curses her to see it. Well, there are no such things as witches. And she was going to live her own life.
As she sat down, she turned on the TV, and Harry Potter stared at her, his mussed up black hair and green eyes glowing into her. She changed the channel quickly and an episode of Charmed was on. Irritated even further, she changed the channel one more time only to find an old episode of Bewitched on.
Turning off the TV, she ran her bath water, and just as she was about to disrobe from her work clothes, her text message went off from one of her sisters at the congregation.
Emergency meeting. Church now.
She sighed, and drove over to the building. She walked in and almost fainted at the sight she saw.
Hundreds of versions of her. All dressed like her Momma, bible in hand, glasses perched on noses, and singing a variety of hymns. Tears glistened in her eyes, as she made her way through the sea of Hers, each in a church dress, full figured and sensible shoes.
She had fought this for so long. They all needed her to be the new Matriarch of the family. The strong one. The one everyone could come to and lean on.
She kept moving through the crowd and toward the back she saw something totally different.
Four more Hers, all totally different than the rest, fading slowly into complete transparency. One was dressed like a porn star, and complexly feminine, owning her sexuality. One was dressed sensibly, and writing in a journal. A Pulitzer Prize was pinned to her lapel and she had a stack of books next to her. The third one was dressed like a man, but still feminine, and an extremely large smile on her face. The fourth had on a college shirt, and a backpack, looking more peaceful than she had ever seen herself.
She stood there, tears flowing freely, blinking ever so often, taking in the scene. All at once, the witch appeared at her side.
“Do you see what I see?” she said.
All she could do was nod.
“You thought I cursed you, but I didn’t. I wanted you to see what you’re doing to yourself.”
“And what am I doing?” she asked.
“Conforming.” The Witch looked at her a smiled. “Did you notice something about all these women?”
She nodded again.
“Is that why you’re crying?” The witch asked.
“Yes”, she said. “None of them are married. Not a one.”
“And”, the witch said, taking her hand and turning her around to face the pulpit in church, “if you keep conforming, this can never happen.”
She looked up, and saw the prettiest version of herself she’d ever seen. Still full-figured, she looked extremely well-kept, happy and energetic. A tall man stood next to her, holding her hand, and kissing it ever so often. A wedding ring sat proudly upon her finger and she noticed how often the couple stared at each other. The crowd of Hers dissipated and the version of her married walked with her husband to the pew. They sat together, opened the bible they shared, and stared happily toward the pulpit, while the other versions of herself left. All but the four in the back, who, instead of continuously fading, were starting to grow more pronounced and clearer.
“What about those four?” she asked the witch.
“They’re apart of you. You can’t exist if you don’t embrace them as well”, she answered.
The four walked over to the pew and one by one sat on top of the married version of her, melting into one complete version.
She looked up at the version of her dressed like a porn star. “Even her?” she asked.
“You would have a husband without her”, the witch said with a slight chuckle.
The witch smile at her and turned to walk toward the door. Don’t forget you”, she said. “Never let others dictate who you become. You block your blessings that way.”
She watched the witch walk away before saying, “You’re not a witch at all, are you?”
She smiled, and floated toward the top of the door, becoming transparent. “Just the opposite. Her face became care worn and familiar lines formed around her mouth and fore head. She gasped as she watched the transformation happen right in front of her eyes.
“Momma?” she said through shock and tears.
“I love you, Baby”, she said. “Live your life and be you, not me.”
She looked around the church, now empty and laughed softly.
“It would have to be in a church, wouldn’t it?” she said aloud, as she opened the door and walked out.
